Amen! Because of games like that I pretty much hold down the A/Y button when running in side scrollers as it feels so natural.
Also,
I show my lady friend my "charged shot" every once in a while IFUGETWHATTAMEAN!
I always hold down the "run" button in any side-scrolling platformer. I think that's because 9 times out of 10 the run/charge button was mapped to the "Y" button on the SNES. The concave shaped of that button just BEGS to be held. Carressed, even.
Oh God! The charge shot in Mega Man X caused me so many problems! Since I absolutely had to have the charge at the ready, my thumb never left the Y button. To jump with B, I used the lower half of my thumb digit. Since I also had to dash and since I wouldn't DARE move my thumb, I sorta developed this index finger "claw" where I would curl it up and use it to hit the A button. I don't know if other people did that. Did you?
I'm the exact same way, and it started with MMX for me too. I literally can't do jumps in the game without simultaneously charging.
Exactly, Why would I shoot a silly old pea when I could charge up a giant ass deathball of fiery awesomsauce?
Hit the nail on the head buddy, charge shot in MMX for the win!
It's awesome in fighting games as well because people can't predict your timing so you can play some tricky mindgames.
Ditto. I have to charge everything, started with MM4 for me. I love MMX's (and it's seguels) charges the best though. In MMX4 you could keep 4 shots charged! Awesome!
@RobotFart:
I loved owning fuckers with Ryu's Denjin Hadouken in SFIII. They'd always freak out and jump, then BAM!!!
Come on, can anyone else think of games with a charge shot, please! I'm going crazy here, lol.
All I can think of is shooters.
Star Fox 64 sort of has a charge shot, as does Panzer Dragoon Saga, though they are both for lock-ons, not really of big lasers.
All the R-Type games have charge shots as well.
Ultimate charge attack. Liu Kangs bicycle kick from mk2
Jonathan Holmes:
YES!!!! YES!!! SHOOTERS!! I completely forgot about shooters. Gradius! Star Fox! Oh my god, thankyou! Hahaha.
I Just remembered Unreal Tournament's rocket launcher where you charged it up to shoot 8 rockets all at once..... oh yeah, thats the stuff.
Sakura has a charged fireball too in Street Fighter Alpha 3. I'd wind up charging accidentally often and getting smacked in the face as punishment.
I'd always rebind buttons to work well with my charge shot. In Mega Man X, my dash became the R button, so on top of constantly charging, I was always dashing. In Devil May Cry 4 I rebound Neros shoot button to L1, so I could hold it down all day long.
Lets see...
-Mega Man 4 through 8
-Castle Shikigami III , on a handful of characters I think
-Castle Crashers (Low FI, bow nd arrow style)
-Lost Planet has a few charge guns
-Halo (1-3), mostly on covenant weapons
-Bangai-O Spirits (sort of... though I guess that's more of a tension/timing thing)
I dig it too!
I'm the exact same way. If there's a charge shot in a game, I use it, no questions asked.
Oh yeah, I got the X Style/Armor/whatever in Megaman Zero 2 first. :D And because of that series, I now map Dash to the L shoulder whenever I play the other games. I have no idea how I pulled off a charged dash-jump before now. XD
"Dude, why are you using the Plasma Pistol (Halo)?"
"MEGAMAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!"
True story. Also, E. Laser + R. Option in Gradius = Extreem rape. At least, in the games where the shot charges and fires automatically, and the shot damages enemies before it launches.
Balrog?
I dunno if this REALLY fits, but it's an impractical move I like to use: Solarbeam + Venusaur in Pokemon R/B/Y.
And uh... well that's all I've got for "charge shots". I guess I'm not as big of a fan as I thought I was reading this article. :'(
Still a fun article though, I liked it.
