First-Person Shooters Are Dull (It's Official Because Yes)

So I was discussing games with a friend of mine who I met through games (literally, I met him in 06 and the first thing he said to me, before even his name, was "Do you have an Xbox 360, because I do, my friends don't, and I wanna talk about it"). 6 years later video games are still the crutch of our conversations, and in our most recent high-octane deliberation I noticed that I've gotten very bored of the FPS genre recently.
Don't get me wrong, I love the Halo series and sunk 20 hours into Halo 4 within days, but now I have no will to play it. I don't even mind the CoD series. But like many I am sick of this tired old genre, and am seriously considering buying a PS3 at the moment just so I can play a fresh game like Journey (also, Ni No Kuni comes out this month and looks fantastic).
So for my first foray into the world of the Destructoid Community, I'm reaching out to you guys: are FPS's going to continue to dominate the market? What are the original, new titles out there that I can play on a current generation console instead of resorting to PS1 emulators and Chrono Trigger? Any hidden gems I should know about?
PS: death to the Mantis.
