EarthBotched: The History of Nintendo vs. Starmen
Aaron Linde | 3:34 PM on 05.07.2008 29 comments

Hallo, mine bitches.

I wrote a big goddamn feature about the history of Starmen and their campaigns to get EarthBound back in North America, with lots of new details that webmaster Reid Young had never revealed before, including:

Starmen's attempt to officially license Mother 3 in North America!

Nintendo's "cultural audit", which establishes how little they listen to their customers!

Other nonsense!

The article is over on Shacknews. I'm pleased with how it turned out, and I was hoping you lads could go take a gander at it. And if you like it, give it a digg, could you?

Is this post awesome? Vote it up!

Awesome post! Looking at all of our crushed hopes it in one place really depresses me though.

That was a great read. I didn't know much about the history of it all... and man. What an epic tale of woe, misery.... and HOPE!

Keep up the good fight, Starmen! It really makes you wonder why Nintendo hasn't done something official.

God nintendo needs to release more stuff like earthbound the game is beyond amazing. Crude humor, strange enemies, and you get to walk around and club stuff with a bat. What more could a gamer want?

After Earthbound 64 was canceled, I sold my N64 in anger and got a Playstation instead, and refused to get a Gamecube because of that.

I really loved that game, I wish I still had it.

Good timing for this, considering I finally got my hands on a cart of EarthBound last night. Really good condition, too.

Wow. Dugg, sent to all of my friends on aim, you know, the whole she-bang-a-bang. I had no idea about the Anthology thing, Nintendo really doesn't have a soul if they didn't do something with the series after that was released.

I am a member of starmen.net and have been calling nintendo for a long time. I was thinking the recignition wasn't going to happen. Then the ESRB thing happend and I went berserk. Thank you for the write up. It reminds me of the dark times, and reminds me that the battle is not over yet.

Why Mother 3 is not out yet, I don't know... Nintendo does stupid crap like that.

Thanks for the article Aaron. It's fun to talk about Earthbound with people, but it seems that whenever I do, the conversation always regresses into nostalgia about how awesome the game is. It's good to see some actual info about how we've gotten hosed for so many years.

Aaron, fantstic writeup. Above anything, you really showcased how it's the love, nay...PK LOVE of the fans that keep the wonder and joy of these games alive and shared for the uninitiated to see, hear about, read in this case...and hopefully someday there will come some sort of reciprocation.

Starmen's contact at Nintendo of America also told them that the site's 2003 phone campaign to get the Mother 1+2 compilation for the Game Boy Advance localized in North America almost worked.

"He said they flagged the game and waited to see if interest would stay steady, but our phone campaign ended after a week," Reid added. "As soon as we heard that, we immediately resolved to keep our current campaign going indefinitely."

That was such a pity :(
