Welcome to the 3rd 3rd Party Memory Card (say wha?) I'm your host, Mister Face Sit 69, bringing you yet another fine memorable moment in gaming history. Last week was pretty old school. This week, old school gets a bit of an update. I won't say much more until we get to the impact, because for the most part this particular moment is all about pretty pictures. Here we go!

The Impact
Full motion video? In my Nintendo? It's more likely than you think.
Two and a half years after the original Super Smash Bros....
...look at how far we'd come.
(these 3 screens ripped from Gamespot because I'm lazy)
The Nintendo 64/Playstation/Saturn era had brought 3-D gaming to the masses. The next generation polished everything and offered a quantum leap in detail. For Nintendo diehards, the Super Smash Bros. Melee intro was most likely their first taste of FMV on a Nintendo system, owing to the switch from cartridges to discs. It wasn't all smoke and mirrors like the infamous Final Fantasy VII commercials, though, as the bits of real time game footage in the middle attest. What a way to launch a system.
As for the actual content of the trailer, multiple nods to the games the characters come from (including three to fan-favorite Ocarina of Time) and the introduction of characters sorely missing from the first game (Bowser) coupled with a fantastic score to add up to the ultimate Nintendo fan wet dream. If you own a Gamecube, you probably own this game, and if you got the system for Christmas of 2001 this was probably your first game for it. Now, as Super Smash Bros. Brawl approaches and anticipation mounts even further, this is the moment that encapsulates that hype.
Check out the intros to the original Super Smash Bros. and Melee below. Compare and contrast:

I watch the Melee intro every time I play, and I can't WAIT for the Brawl intro. I have a feeling some candy will fall out of my Wii slot when I first watch it.

Great post. I'm always ready to think about Melee again.
A quick tip on yout BBcode, your "attached photos" section is streching your page a mile wide. If you go to your "Write a new blog post" page, make this one "Not Live" or "Hidden" (I can't remember which), then copy and past the contest of this blog to a new blog and make that live, you wont have the strech.
Honest, it's a good time.

Yeah, I thought about doing that. Will do when I'm done adding a few things. Thanks!
Yes! I remeber putting that in and watching it and basically sitting there for a solid ten minutes in awe. The picture set-up is fucking epic also. Best one yet, sad you posted it after I started writing What Happend :(.
Glad you enjoyed the picture setup, that was partially due to being too lazy to write, and partially this because this one pretty much speaks for itself :3
And go ahead and sneak it into tomorrow's What Happened, I won't tell.
Probably doesn't need a memory card, considering how prolific the game was, but good job highlighting the video that I watched at least 10 times a day leading up to the launch.

I love the title of your series. Hopefully, you won't corrupt my saves. I went back and read all of these. I especially liked your piece on the water section in 8-4 of Super Mario Bros.
Woohoo! Thanks, Tristero. I like that one, too. It's a moment that almost no one would mention as one of their most memorable, including myself, at first thought. I wanted to do one about SMB though, and after a few seconds I realized that the water section is one particular moment I enjoy that sticks out.
Also, I could have made this one better by including my own personal reaction, but I got tired of sitting there taking screenshots and having to hook my Wii up to the computer and then take it back to my room. Basically, I still watch this intro occasionally and watched it like 30 times when I first got the game, as people have mentioned here.
