I lost a spelling bee in elementary school in the first round due to the word "turban". I thought they wanted me to spell T-U-R-B-I-N-E.
And Bowie fucking rules. What's your favorite album?

@Conrad:
Currently it's "Heroes", mostly because that's the most recent I've picked up and have been listening to frequently since September. "Joe The Lion" gets stuck in my head all the time for some reason (yeah, yeah.) I love all the songs on that album, the instrumental/ambient tracks are really great and actually quite a bit different than the ones on Low. I also instantly fell in love with Low when I got it. The first half of Scary Monsters is excellent and "Teenage Wildlife" is a personal fave. It's also a lot of fun to try and sing along with while trying to keep your head from exploding.
And then there's Hunky Dory and Seu Jorge's fantastic covers on The Life Aquatic Studio Sessions. Ziggy is fantastic but loses points for a bit muddy production and a couple of songs that don't stand up to the rest of the album (but are still pretty far ahead of the back half of Scary Monsters, which I've grown to love but obviously isn't that album's strong point.)
@Hamza: I stuck that in as kind of a "list" motif/joke, but I agree. The end of Volume 2 is fantastic.
@F Whipple: Thanks! I might detail my tastes further in the forums or on my sidebar one of these days.

DUDE! The ghost in the car was just me saying "hi", christ man, you lost your shit. ;)
Seriously though, that scared the everloving crap out of me too. I would also love to have you come to the bar one night so that we could hustle the quiz crowd :)
Keep the good stuff coming man :D

Regarding #3, have you tried your hand at programming? For someone who's into math it's a good way to apply some of that problem solving skill to a high demand field.
I'm with you on #5, pop music horrifies me - I grew up listening to that style of music and it's the only genre I can put a radio station and like 95% of what they play.

@AgentMOO: I had one introductory programming class in college as part of the math major, and I actually did enjoy it quite a bit. Not a bad suggestion, and one I've thought about before. Laziness makes me bad at teaching myself, though, so I feel like I need to get some piddly job in the meanwhile to get me back into school. I potentially would have switched majors or at least minored in CS in college, but the CS program had a bad reputation with regards to professors. Did the mention of GEB tip you off?
As for music, I miss the local '80s station. Even bands that were crap had at least one good song on the airwaves in the '80s, or so it would seem from the playlists on that station. I have to admit the soulless JACK FM format does do a pretty good job of playing songs I like or can at least tolerate.
@Y0J1MB0: Gracias!
@The GHost: If you've got the sports angle nailed, I'll take care of the math questions. Although I totally failed the final question on "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?" last night, which humbled me (forgot that 1 counts as a common factor, just like the guy did.)
