No More Heroes: First Impressions

After a long crusade of bugging my parents to let me get No More Heroes, I finally succeeded. I picked up my copy from my local EB Games as soon as it opened. I then ran home, and plugged it into my Wii. For my thoughts, hit the nonexistant jump.

No More Heroes is brutal. The protagonist is completely unlikeable, the graphics are Dreamcast quality, the open world is an illusion, but despite all that, it's still the most fun I've had with my Wii since Twilight Princess.

I have a few complaints though. First of all, you have to grind yourself retarded to get to the next mission. This may be intentional, but it makes the game somewhat less fun. Second, for the side missions, which you need to do in order to progress through the game, you must drive to the hub, get a mission, drive to the point on your map, do the mission, drive back, choose another mission, drive to it, drive back, wash, rinse, repeat. If you fuck up a mission, you don't get a retry button, you get to drive back to the hub, re-choose the mission, drive to the point, and try not to fuck it up. If this seems monotonous, it is, but the combat makes it all worthwhile.

When you finish grinding, and have enough money to get into the next mission, the game really picks up. The "end of level" bosses are insane, truly epic fights. A favorite of mine is the fourth. I'm not going to spoil it for you, but believe me when I say that it's fucked up.

That's about all I can say for now, but expect a full review when I finish.

Completely unlikeable? poor Travis . . .

Enh. When grinding involves swinging a laser sword, it isn't all that bad.

Funny, up to the second last mission the money I won from beating the ranked fighter nearly paid for my next fight. The only real reason to do the jobs/side missions was for the exercises and beam saber upgrades (and clothing I suppose, although that was quite pointless once you found the "Love Tits" tshirt ^_^), and again until the last fight I never really had to repeat them unless I failed.

Aside from the shading (which most cell shaded games don't do right) I really liked the graphics and art style. The fighting was decent and the boss battles were definitely epic (seriously, they get more and more outrageous the further you go). The story though was pretty disappointing in the end, like Suda51 was just trying to piss me off. Plus the overworld seemed completely pointless since you couldn't actually do anything in it. It could have easily been replaced with a simple menu system like Travis' apartment used.

I picked it up last week. After the initial feeling of WTH is going on I'm diggin it so far. The story isn't that engaging, rank up just because you want to and possibly score a hot french babe is pretty much it, at least so far. But then again, for me, it doesn't have to be more than that. The boss battles are awesome, the style of the game is cool, and the gameplay is fun. You can to the bare minimum to get to each boss level, or mess around and unlock other stuff if you want. After I finish it I might write up a review too rather than keep typing here.

Clarifications:

About the grinding: I felt it necessary to buy up every piece of clothing I could get my hands on, every upgrade, and every beam katana. This leads to a fuckton of grinding.

About Travis: He's a psycopath who kills for fun. He's a bit of a nerd, so I see myself there though.

About the graphics: I meant to say that the polygon count and resolution are low in some places.

I agree about the graphics. I liked the look and style of them, but I thought they could have been more polished, even for a Wii game.

I finally played it myself recently and I loved it. I thought Travis was great and the writing for the cutscenes is awesome. Sure the game has it's faults but the writing made up for everyone of them, that and the boss battles are fucking epic.

Travis was great, but he was a total dick.

Travis is a spot on parody of your average GTA loving, teenage American male. Maybe it wasn't the smartest move for Suda51 to openly mock his audience in such an obvious way, but it certainly worked for me. More importantly, by the end of the game, you see that Travis is actually a decent guy, considering the circumstances.

As for the open world, I actually had a really good time with it. Finding Lovikov balls and t-shirts in dumpsters was a great diversion. In no way was it as fun as the "mission" aspects of the game, but it was still fun.

I'm not saying I don't like the open world, I'm just saying it could be improved.

You only really have to grind if you're an idiot like me and must by every shirt.
