Given that there is nothing good on the Wii that I haven't already played, I've found myself resorting more and more frequently to the Virtual Console and Gamecube compatability to keep myself from thinking that it was a waste of money. Essentially, I'm spending money to lie to myself. It's the same principle as the Rev Rant in the Goemon episode of RFGO. Anyway, dispensing with the rambling preface, I recently downloaded SMRPG, because I love the Paper Mario series, and I knew it would be awesome. I beat it yesterday, and here are my opinions of the two: Graphics: I'm not a graphics whore, but I still think that rendered sprites look really goddamn ugly. I'm probably in the minority here, but I think that graphics go to Paper Mario. Characters: A bit more difficult choice, given that Paper Mario had more, and they actually all had interesting connections to the world. However, SMRPG had a far better system for how they played. It felt like a 'real' RPG. Advantage: SMRPG. Story: I personally think that both plots are rather weak, but then so are those of every Mario game. I personally preferred SMRPG, due to the coolness of Smithy. Control: I FUCKING HATE ISOMETRIC PLATFORMING! As such, Paper Mario wins by default. If I go into more detail, Paper Mario also had more interesting combat action command quicktime thingies. Writing: Both are all awesome, all the time. BUT, Paper Mario had a cooler font. So it wins. Final Opinion: I personally think that they both are fucking fantastic games, and if you have the option, you should buy both. I prefered Paper Mario, so if you only have 10 bucks, you get that.
