And the Gamer's Who Play Them: Gaming Snobs
-the-mole- | 11:04 PM on 03.18.2008 15 comments

For my first community blog post... ever, as well as a part of this month's Monthly Musing Feature, I will attempt to explain what a gaming snob is, and why we (yes I include myself in this group) are the way we are.

The other day, me and a few of my chums were taking a pleasant stroll across the school yard when I decided to begin a debate on the flaws of Fallout 2. I started by stating that it a dreadfully slow, archaic combat system, although, I had to concede the point that the game is nearly a decade old at this point and that I might be a bit biased. Shortly after that, another of my dear pals walked up and began raving about the Forge system in Halo 3. I launched a salvo after salvo of verbal assaults on the title, complaining about everything from the idiots who play it (not everyone of course, just 99% of XBL users) to its uninspired, hackneyed story. When I stopped to take a breath, Shayne said that I needed to let stuff go and just enjoy the game for what it was. He called me a gaming snob.

It took me a few fully understand what that meant. What was a gaming snob? What makes me one? How did I become one?

My first challenge was to define a gaming snob. The best definition I have come up with so far is that a gaming snob is a fanboy. We do not attach ourselves to systems however, we simply separate ourselves from the mainstream; from the “casuals”. Games like the Guitar Hero series, and Grand Theft Auto, simply aren't “hardcore” enough for us. We attach ourselves to a mix of obscure and middle-of-the-road titles such as Killer7 and KOTOR respectively. We are well versed in the history of gaming and happenings in the industry. We view ourselves as enlightened and above the mainstream, we seek depth in our games, we seek meaning and for some arbitrary reason only obscure titles can deliver that.

Once I had defined the term I realized that, indeed, Shayne was right, and I was guilty of gaming snobbery. As many of you will know from reading a few of my forum posts I consistently rail against Halo, I did not enjoy much of the Final Fantasy series, I was not crazy about Rock Band or Guitar Hero; the list goes on and on. For whatever reason I have subconsciously deemed these games to have no value, either artistic or entertainment, whatsoever. I may try and hide behind arguments for games like Halo, but I can really think of no defense for hating Guitar Hero. I love the music, I don't mind most rhythm games, but I believe the fact that Guitar Hero is overwhelmingly popular has triggered an automatic response of hatred for it.

I still cannot say exactly how or why I am a gaming snob, but I can state it seems to be rooted in a need for attention. I have noticed in myself, and indeed in most other gaming snobs, that we are traditionally shy people that wish we could be more outgoing, and when the subject turns to games we see a chance to voice an opinion that counters the majority in a hope of gaining attention and approval from those who are casual or “intermediate”, as BFeld13 put it in his blog. Why we crave attention specifically I cannot say, and I believe that point to be somewhat irrelevant, what matters is that the gaming public recognizes that there are those who simply wish to tell everyone what they think.

I understand that, given my argument that gaming snobs simply seek attention that this posting is, in and of itself a ploy for attention. I suppose on some level that's probably true, but my primary motivation for writing this is to help people understand us snobs. We aren't trying to be assholes, we simply seek recognition and I hope you can forgive us.

OH HAY IT'S THE GUY FROM THE FORUMS.

I don't know how I know that when I don't even read the forums.

Also I'm not a snob, I'm an elitist prick, thanyouverymuch.

i wish I could use the forums but apparently the forums hate me.

I fall into this category.

I also think the most confusing games are the best games, and anyone who thinks otherwise is uncultured.

I think destructoid has a lot of gaming snobs. I know I am one.

Im kind of the opposite - i automatically hate games (or movies, books even) that are critically well received (like Bioshock) and i love every series you mentioned.
Luckily if i play a game before i know how 'amazing' it is then i still like it, like HL2, Portal, Cod 4.

Im glad you embrace your snobbery, and know that you do it automatically. It makes you less of a jerk :P.

Well I'm pretty high-demanding of games too nowadays, but that simply because I don't have time to be bothered playing shit I don't fully like, sure I finished Halo3 and I enjoy playing the occasional online match ( with friends or either without headset ), but I honestly can't get myself to waste hours upon hours of quality gaming time with the vile garbage that was GTA3 or FIFAxx :-)

I work fulltime and I live with my girlfriend, the little spare time I have that I can spend on gaming, I wanna spend wisely, so I play stuff that I just know I'm gonna like, Mass Effect, Lost Odyssey, God Of War II, mostly AAA-titles anyway, but do I consider myself a snob? not really to be honest, if I would have the time ( like I used to when I was in College ), I'd play all those games (except GTA3) and enjoy the decent ones,

what I'm saying is that I think its a logical evolution in anything you do to always want to get the better experience... Why spend 4 hours playing Halo3 online when you can have more fun in COD4? I mean, if you start drinking wine, you'll always go for more expensive bottles in the end, the more you drink it, the more refined your taste becomes...

There are most certainly gamingsnobs out there, but in a way its just natural I think, also games are pretty fucking expensive, so if you have to choose between a mediocre game that is really popular or a sweet-suck-your-dick-great-game that nobody knows, I think most people will those the second game :-)

Don't feel bad about it, I don't judge you, nobody should, it's only natural :-)

You don't seem like a snob, more like someone who's stuck in the past.

Games are fun, Halo is fun(that's why people like it so much, get over it already, accept this as fact), classics have their place as well but don't rail against one thing while singing the praises off another.

Also, people don't buy Halo because of the story, they buy because it off the multiplayer, Bungie did an excellent job of making a very well balanced multiplayer that caters to all styles of play and Forge allows you to fuck around with the mechanics of the game and do some pretty crazy shit, so when you inevitably get tired of blasting people or fragging them, you can play some soccer, maybe a little golf, perhaps a race or try that american gladiators map someone came up with.

Yes I know, PC modding has been doing it before, blablabla, fuck PC gaming, I am talking about consoles here and the merits of the game you seem to hate so much.

Why don't you try it with this group of friends, you might just have fun.

Excellent post man. Refreshingly honest.

I used to be really bad at this about a lot of things, but it wasn't something that I consciously did. I just found myself nitpicking on everything. I eventually realized it and cooled off on voicing my hatred on anything I didn't like and now I mostly keep the outright negative stuff like this to myself (or at least I try to, doesn't always happen).

I think it's great to voice your opinion, but there is a fine line between voicing your opinion and being pedantic and condescending IMO.

Can I be a punctuation snob? It's "And the Gamers Who Play Them", as you don't need the possessive apostrophe when you clearly mean a plural.

Other than that, I'd recommend giving Rock Band a chance. Harmonix is a great gamer company. They're all hardcore nerds, but that nerddom covers music as well as video games. Check out their earlier games, like Frequency and Amplitude. Definite gamer snob material there. The little details in Rock Band are what get me. I love that it takes your band name and designed characters, and then makes posters, photographs, labels on backgrounds and your bus... it does such a great job of implementing your unique stuff into the games visuals and locations.

As for Halo 3, I enjoy the game play. The story... well, the parts not dictated by screaming soldiers, it's solid enough sci fi junk there. Not great, but alright. And it got better as the series matured. Spoiler, for those who careBy the end of the series, humanity is pretty much dead, kind of bleak for a run of the mill shooter. The back story and terminal stuff is all very Marathon, which is in itself fairly hardcore.

Just play the games that you like, college jocks tastes aside. You'll end up missing some good stuff just because it's popular.

I'm not quite sure I understand your point fully.... you say Snobs crave attention and label yourself as one of them but then you rail against popular games such as Halo, FF, GTA (both of which imo is hardcore), Rockband and Guitar Hero. Surly this would only create negative attention or is that the kind you desire because praising them will also get you attention.

I think a big reason for snobbery is the fact that it's only recently that games have become so mainstream. Before it was pretty much for "hardcore" people like us but now that everyone's in on it it's not so special to us anymore so we feel the need to distance ourselves from the popular.

You can see the same in music. When you find a new band that no one knows they become like your secret treasure. You tell people about them and how amazing they are and you feel proud for knowing about a great band before everyone else and when seeing them live you're just in a crowd of 20 people. Then they get big, their songs are on the radio and they are playing massive stadium shows, you can no longer get close to them at gigs and then they aren't so special anymore despite the fact they are doing what they always have done.....and so you look for a new favorite band....

If you are dissing things that are really great because they are popular (say, Portal) then you are a "snob".

If you play Killer 7 and KOTOR instead of Halo 3 and Guitar Hero 3...you just have good taste.

Those are just mediocre titles that are possibly "fun" as people here seem to want to point out, but the latest American-Idol-inspired album is also probably "OK" but you won't catch me there...

Just like your friend whos a big fan of top 40 country, you shouldn't be forced to call yourself a snob just because you have better taste. Ignore the subject with him if he's not open to debate. :)

@ anus mcphanus

that is very good point and one that i had't even though of... but even then when you begin saying stuff like "i knew them before they were big" or "i played that ages ago" or something tsimilar you are still attempting to pull attention to yourself. also, to attention whores there is little difference between good and bad attention. public recognition is the primary goal.
-the-mole-'s Destructoid Blog
@ koobert

you are correct... i made a mistake... in the title too... damn...
hammburglar's Destructoid Blog
i think some gaming snobs are like the kids you see around calling people conformists because they like something thats popular without even thinking that it could actually be good. sometimes they just dont give the good games a fair shake and have made up their mind before even playing it. however the way you put it, it makes some sense. id say you did a bang up job for your first c-blog post. maybe we'll get to see some more???
