Blizzard to cut mount costs and lower training levels in WoW photo

Veteran players can attest: it’s getting easier to do things early in World of Warcraft. As the MMO ages, Blizzard continues to tweak the game softly so the newcomer can get in on higher-level action faster.  The next patch -- 3.2 -- won’t be an exception to the friendly trend. Changes to the mount system are coming.

Zarhym, World of Warcraft’s community manager, threw down a list of mount changes coming to the MMO with the “next major content patch.” From it, we see that Blizzard is lowering the training levels, increasing speed across the board, and cutting the cost of training and purchasing the little buggers. Nice.

A small listing of the mount changes is available below the fold, but the full details can be found at WoW.com.

Call us crazy, but we don’t mind WoW is steadily becoming more accessible. What’s your take on it? Do you mind that people are blitzing through stuff that may have taken you a week or so to complete?

At least this will stop people begging for a loan on mounts. I'm also glad the regular flying mount is getting a bit of an upgrade, that 60% flying speed increase always bugged me on my alts.
Going faster is never a bad thing in MMOs in my opinion, those travel times really can get a bit...big.
I'm also seeing moaning from classes who have travel powers, only a bit though

Hardcore WoW players, I'm sure, are crying about this right now because they want everyone to be hardcore like they are and pay the same price they did.

Personally, as someone who started playing WoW years ago and had to grind the "old-fashioned" way, I don't mind it at all. I absolutely hated having to run everywhere until I was level 40...it takes forever to get to where you want to go. I haven't played WoW for months, and I don't know if I'll ever go back (I think I'm finally sick of it), but I don't think the change is bad.

I think it's a good idea to make the climb to 60 from the original game easier. New subscribers don't want to hang around low level towns forever, they want to get to the higher level action!

lowering money sinks? Considering how inflated the games economy is, that's pretty nuts. Newbies can make thousands of gold via the auction house just because rich high level players don't want to farm crafting mats. Granted the biggest money sink, epic flying, is still unchanged.

I think its a fantastic change. Obviously recreating the old world would take too much resources away from creating NEW content - and the old content is hard to swallow these days. Especially when you've done it all before a few times. :(

This seems like a great way to bring more characters onto the field, new players and old. I look forward to leveling some alts to 20 and waiting for these changes to happen! :P

THIS IS A SLAP IN THE FACE TO EVERYTHING I WORKED SO HARD TO ACHIEVE. BLIZZ SUX I'M CANCELLING.

But srsly, thank goodness. The Barrens might be tolerable now without spending eight minutes hoofing from one quest spot to another.

it's a terrible change. I quit wow 3 months ago. after 6 80's, and multiple 70's, it's super easy and super fast to get max level toons. Just takes an hour a night and in no time you have an 80.

I left cause the game got too dumbed down. Too many group quests in wotlk that you can 9/10 classes can solo. Ulduar was a joke. Farming that place on the 2nd week, then they dumb Ulduar down even more.. and still continue to do so. Making the game easier for casuals (I know, casuals should get to play too), but this is hurting casuals more then helping them. When those casuals finally do get to 80, they are going to be stuck doing raids with other "casuals".... a nightmare will ensue.

anyone want to buy my account? :P

Makes sense considering most guilds and raid groups want nothing to do with you until you are fully leveled and able to get where they need you fast. In a game where the end game is all that matters, newbies need all the help they can get.

Blue:who the fuck uses the barrens when the rewards for completing ghostlands are infinitely better?

Not that it really matters. I quit wow when I realized the only thing blizz cared about was ushering everyone to 80 so they could play pvp or raid.

I duno, the low level stuff I can understand (epic ground mount is def a big plus cause I hated walking everywhere), they advertise all the wonderful new content in the expansions but when new players finally breakdown and buy the game they find out they have to go though a week long grind fest to get to it. Im just not ok with dumbing down the end game stuff.

Wow classic, cool let em whip up to 60. Burning crusade, the honeymoon should be over and it should start getting significantly harder. WotLK I agree with some of the other players Ive talked to there needs to be more hardcore content for the diehards (cant relly include myself in that cause I cant sit through 100 man 60 hour raids but some people dig that stuff) The diehards are the backbone of thier revenue and eventually causual players will casually wander off to other games and other pastimes. It might take a year or two to feel the effect, I just hope blizzard arent make a tactical blunder.

To me, this is awful news, because Mounts are one of the rights of passage for hardcore players. Soon, they'll start stripping away more and more from the hardcores, which is bad in my opinion. I can definitely "see" casual's points: it makes the game more accessible, blah blah. But you know why WoW is SO popular still? Because it caters to the hardcore, and gives us one hell of an endgame.

Blizzard is also using a retarded method to prolong their hardcore raids. A boss in the recent patch can only be fought ONE HOUR per week. If that's not sleazy, I don't know what is.

WoW was already just an instant win button. It was never a game. I'm impressed that they continue to make the easiest mmo out there even easier.

For the love of Zeus people, you whiners need to suffer through some FFXI. MMOs should not require you to shun your friends and family and quit your job to be successful.

I prefer it this way. In fact, with these changes, I may just start playing again.

Either that or wait for The Old Republic.

I'm leveling two characters right now (A Death Knight at 64, and a Paladin I play with my girlfriend at 25) and I can say for sure this is a welcome change.

Just because I suffered through my first character, doesnt mean I think everyone should suffer.

All the long time players can sit on their high horse (pardon the pun) and go on about how they did it the hard way and how much better they are.

While all the noobs/casuals will be happy in their ignorance.

Win win.

It's easy to make enough money to afford a mount by level 30 currently, so I don't see why this is necessary.

@AaronF: its one thing to be as hardcore as ff11, I agree on that. My ossue with it is another entirely. Its the fact that theres a good 79 levels worth of interesting quests, neat little places to explore, easter eggs, lore bits, and out of the way quests and instances. And every time blizzard nerfs the content to make it easier to level to 80, it becomes less and less likely that anyone will ever give enough of a shit to play through dire maul. Not to mention the moving of all the interesting holiday event loot to capped level bosses. . the gear is worthless in dire maul these days, its out of the way, and by the time you can enter it you can enter instances like the early outland content. Thats what disgusts me, its not about the fact I could easily jerk my way to 80 while viewing porn, its that the devs have all but stated that any content that isnt designed for raiders or hardcore pvpers might as well not exist because blizzard doesnt give a flying fuck about you if you're not interested in endgame.

If I was still playing I'd be a little bit miffed as I'm sure plenty of the hardcore players are, but I say its better because it'll attract new players and they'll stay longer.

These changes make level 20-40 and 40-60 easier, but don't change the upper levels, which are the levels that "count". I have ten 70s, trying to make them 80s, and I wish they had changed the price of the flying epic mounts to 75g each. Nobody seemed to gripe when you could start a DK at level 55. So why gripe at this? Personally, i find the lower levels fun. I've never yet had any fun or success with the 80 warlock I've achieved. Every raid has been a failure, hours of wasted time. Something is wrong when you need to wait hours for a raid to start. This is not fun. And then when a boss with millions of health kills your main tank in 30 seconds, how is this fun?
