Blizzard shows off StarCraft II beta system requirements photo

We've seen quite a few system requirements for StarCraft II, many of which ended up being nothing more than baseless rumors, but these ... if these aren't legit, I'm done. Blizzard support for Europe has the system specs listed in full as if it's no big deal. It's StarCraft, so of course it's a big deal.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Operating System - Windows XP/XP64 (Service Pack 3), Windows Vista/Vista64 (Service Pack 1), Windows 7 Home Premium
  • Processor - Intel Pentium IV 1.3GHz, AMD XP 1500+
  • Memory - (Windows XP) 512mb, (Windows Vista) 1024mb, (Windows 7) 1024mb
  • Graphics - 3D graphics processor with Hardware Transform and Lighting with 32 MB VRAM
  • such as an ATI Radeon 7200 or NVIDIA GeForce 2 class card or better
  • Hard Drive - 15Gb of free space
  • DirectX9.0c

Recommended Requirements:

  • Processor - Intel Pentium D, AMD 64 X2
  • Memory - (Windows XP) 1024mb, (Windows Vista) 2048mb, (Windows 7) 2048mb
  • Graphics - 3D graphics processor with Vertex and Pixel Shader capability with 128 MB VRAM
  • such as an ATI Radeon X1600 or NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT class card or better

It's worth noting this is specifically what you'll need to run the beta. I wouldn't be surprised if the full retail version of StarCraft II has slightly tweaked requirements. Also: wow, these are really low. What kind of magic are you pulling behind the scenes, guys?

[Update: Guess we should have known they were too good to be true, eh? These specs aren't the real deal. Rather, they were meant to be a placeholder until Blizzard gets around to starting the beta.]

Now we just need a date for the BETA.

Sure the game looks very cartoony, but for how nice it looks, to get the system requirements that low..... I'm impressed.

Holy hell, this will run on my 6 year old printer whore that's in my fathers office. Wow, and here I thought I needed to get a new i7 just to run new games. This will be a stick in the eye for those who say computer gaming is too expensive to keep up with.

Just like all steam the have it all graphics, physics, effects, animations and then they say you need a 100$ PC to run them at max settings.

Those specs actually lower my anticipation for the game.. kinda like when EA Sports release specs for their FIFA games (PC=PS2 port, not the next-gen edition)

"Unfortunately, during this phase a Mac version will not be available."

That's a bummer.

And yeah, obviously that first link worked at the time of writing. Looks like someone said too much? =)

Crap, I really wanted to see the Mac specs. But I'm guessing, if they are nearly as low as these, my two year old Macbook Pro should be able to handle it.

Blizzard once again shows that they know art design trumps high poly count.

I don't understand why more developers don't do this. A big part of Blizzard's success is the low system requirements. Normal people with normal, non-gaming PCs can run this. That increases your pool of potential customers by several orders of magnitude.

Pre-Activision Blizzard wouldn't have dissed us Mac users in such a way.

Seriously those are low requirements. The only thing my laptop is missing is the graphics card. It's pretty funny because I could almost run this and I gave up on PC gaming because I was so far behind hardware-wise almost four years ago.

These look like the system requirements for World of Warcraft, not Starcraft 2.

they know they need to keep the recs low in order for the game to be accessible to a large number of people.

plus there is no need to go over the top on an RTS, especially since they dont want the game to feel too different from the first one.

Good on blizz for having such low specs. I've seen the game on a beefy rig and it looks awesome... the engine must be very robust

Oh Blizzard I know you will one day be consumed by the power of the dark lord Activision but please let Starcraft 2 have the old magic, just SC2 is all I ask, maybe Cataclysm too if you can, but if not that then just SC2 and then I will remember you fondly always.

Not that surprising coming from Blizzard and the fact they need to sell this in Korea. But damn.

@Narishma:

It doesn't surprise me that World of Warcraft and Starcraft 2 would have similar system requirements, since they're by the same company. I wonder why you think Starcraft 2's would be different?

Geez, the computer I built 9 years ago could almost run that. Though I can't believe that those minimum requirements are even remotely playable. A 1GB Vista machine can barely run notepad without chugging.

Fourth, the words at the end of the Phaistos disk seem to be shorter than those at the outset, which would match the pattern found in various Ural-Altaic languages where the terminal words are frequently verbs of being or doing following longer participial and gerundive constructions.

Fifth, the frequent "warrior" plus "shield" characters at the beginning of words in the Phaistos disk could be a kind of religious incantation--perhaps an honorific name of individual gods, as with saints in Christian religious documents.
