Blizzard's unannounced IP is an MMO photo

We now have one itty-bitty detail regarding Blizzard’s unannounced, but often speculated upon, unannounced IP: it’s an MMO.

Blizzard’s community manager, “Zarhym,” spilled the genre beans on the official World of Warcraft forums when he responsed to an enthusiast’s ramblings on everything Blizzard, which included a stern dismissal of a new Blizzard MMO.

“We have nothing to advertise for the new MMO because it's a shell of a game thus far,” he wrote. “We've already stated it'll be a brand new franchise, which means the lore, art, and game play are being developed entirely from scratch.”

So, there you have it. The unannounced IP is an MMO and it’s apparently still raw. Twenty bucks says it’ll still come out before Duke Nukem For -- oh yeah. I forgot.

It's got the best chance of being a WoW killer of any of them.

That of course, doesn't mean that it will.
But WoW is so far ahead, you'd think the only people who could better WoW and the makers of WoW. I don't even know why WoW is the best, But I've tried lots of MMO's, and none of them hold a candle to WoW... I know alot of them copy the gameplay/UI/Quest systems of WoW, but they don't get it right. Beats me.

I'd say the fact that it was based on such a strongly familiar and popular franchise is what gave it its power today. I'm thinking the only thing that could take down WoW now would be a Starcraft MMO. Even that, I fear would not be enough to put a serious dent into Wow with the firm hold that it already has.

Nice Mother Sharaz pic.

@Aurain
I could write a series of blogs on what WoW does right compared to other failed/niche MMOs. The main reason is - they cater to the casual crowd with simple, pick up and play gameplay, and have the most extensive and addicting end-game raiding system that will most likely ever be conceived.

It's gonna be interesting seeing videos of people multiboxing two games instead of one...fucking junkies.

Didn't necessarily say it was an RPG though. An MMORTS would be interesting.

I like to think its like a casino. They bring you in with the flash, the sounds and the promise of possible riches.

They keep you there because they're feeding you drinks, letting you win a little and giving you all sorts of random reasons to stay (High roller tables, table chips, random registered guest giveaways, arguably pretty ladies in revealing outfits, a hot machine, in house food...)

Not that its a bad thing. The psychology of keeping gamers is fascinating.

WoW might have innovated the way MMOs are perceived nowadays but that doesn't mean another company can't break the mold and do it again. for instance...maybe the bioware/lucasarts MMO?

I hope it happens.

I really do, I want a nice new addictive MMO to play.

I'd kill for a new Final Fantasy MMO set in Ivalice with Viera/Hume/Bangaa/Nu Mou instead of the FFXI world...

And with none of 11's crappiness.

It would be nice to see a new IP from Blizzard, but wouldn't an MMO need an IP with a rich universe to keep it as interesting as WoW? So maybe a... Starcraft MMO-something? I doubt they'll make a Starcraft MMORPG in the WoW tradition since they already have WoW working well for them. Also, Starcraft Ghost never led anywhere, so maybe they just canceled the 3rd persion action/adventure aspect of Ghost and decided to take it to an action MMO route instead?

Sorry to say that this is about 8 months old.

Blizz had stated many times, had help wanted adds, and ben apart of talks about a new IP and that it was and MMO.

Most of us that fallow the PC gaming mmo or rpg game groups knew about this far longer then this blue post.

The Blue post was mad to stop the idiots of the Blizz forums from talking about a WORLD OF STARCRAFT, or WORLD OF DIABLO.

But its is still good to see that Dtoid is starting to fallow more PC things.

And for that Brad Nicholson, I am going to lift a dumbbell in your honor.

Color me surprised at this article. Usually you guys are fast on the news but this is months old.

As far as the complaints of it being new compared to WoW's extensive lore and litiny of games, it's got one of the best lore teams in the world working on it. The fact that it's new isn't a bad thing, it just means it'll be different.

I can imagine that although the game is new, with new graphics, new lore etc, Blizz won't want to take too much of a gamble with the gameplay, as to not alienate the fanbase of WoW. As such, I don't expect it to be drastically different. Might give it a look, and hell, I could be wrong, it could be a FPSMMO.

Yeah, I don't know. Part of me thinks it would be pointless to do another MMO in the same exact vein as WoW. I mean that's already successful and why do another one the exact same style. It would actually be exciting to see Blizzard pioneer a new type of MMO like ToiletDuck said. Still, months (more likely) years away before anything.

Must've been those former SOE execs that pushed for this idea. Nothing wrong with something completely new, and Blizzard is definitely a much different beast these days compared to the pre-WoW days so it's no secret they have the funds to queue up a lot more projects than before.

Guess we'll have to wait and see in oh..10+ years when they announced it's in development hah.
