Blizzard has something else up their sleeves photo

No, its not what you're thinking either. Frank Pearce, Bilzzard's senior vice president of product development told Gamasutra that the company has created a 'third team' to work on a new title - something totally seperate from World of Warcraft or StarCraft II. The comment slipped when the discussion moved into 'workforce' territory:

"Our global headcount is 2,700," said Pearce, "And most of that is customer service for World of Warcraft! In terms of development staff it’s probably around 350. World of Warcraft is about 135 people, 40 for Starcraft II, 40 for team 3, our cinematics team is about 85 guys. Then there’s sound and Q/A and that sort of thing."

When Gamasutra asked for more details, all that was said is that "Team 3 is working on something really awesome. I can’t give you any hints, but it’s totally awesome."

Gamasutra says that Bizzard's director of global public relations (who was also in attendance) wasn't digging the direction the discussion was headed. They say that looks of shock and horror were involved. Oh, and they were able to confirm that this is different from StarCraft Ghost, so don't go there either.

The word around town (and we've heard this multiple times today) is that the August 3rd Blizzcon is where we'll hear more about this third team's secret project.

They've ruled out Starcraft and Warcraft. They'd never be so nice to me as to make Lost Vikings 3. It's gonna be Diablo 4.

It HAS to be Diablo 3. They'd be stupid not to make that game, and it's ripe for fruition. Maybe it's something new, some fourth individual addition to their elite cast of franchises, but I find it most likely that they're long into development of Diablo 3.

3 options:
1) Guild housing for Diablo 2 (sorry, had to)
2) Maybe the new engine for WoW? That would be awesome.
3) Diablo 3 is my primary wish though.

gotta be Diablo 3.. but my question is this - will it be a regular free-to-play hack n slash like 1 and 2, or will it be a pay-to-play MMO?

if it's pay-to-play, no chance i'll be buying it.

Yeah, if it is Diablo 3 (and it is), they better be sticking with instanced free-to-play.

It better not be another grind-o-tron MMO. I hit GM in WoW (the real way)and I can fully say that I wasted two years of my life on that game. We need a good rebirth in single-player gaming... C'mon new school instanced Diablo 3.

Warhammer's my next MMO btw... damn it, I have to try it...

Diablo 3, and they have been in development not long after Diablo 2 LoD was released. It will be out sometime around 2010.

Diablo III, please please please!

Other acceptable titles would be The Lost Vikings and Rock 'n' Roll Racing.

A game is not the secret project! The secret project is Blizz getting the entire nation of South Korea as their dev team.

THEN they'll work on the next game.

I dunno if they'd want to talk about something groundshaking like Diablo3.

I mean this is the same event where people will be beta-ing SC2 multiplayer, wouldn't that take the wind out of their own sails?
