Blizzard defends Starcraft II's lack of LAN support photo

Yesterday, it was revealed that long-awaited RTS Starcraft II would not have LAN support, sending a number of PC gamers into a frenzy, despite the fact that they had the Internet so it shouldn't really be a problem. Blizzard has naturally responded to the nerd rage, defending its position and making sure to mention piracy as a contributing factor.

"We don't currently plan to support LAN play with StarCraft II, as we are building Battle.net to be the ideal destination for multiplayer gaming with StarCraft II and future Blizzard Entertainment games," confirms a Blizzard rep. "While this was a difficult decision for us, we felt that moving away from LAN play and directing players to our upgraded Battle.net service was the best option to ensure a quality multiplayer experience with StarCraft II and safeguard against piracy.

"Several Battle.net features like advanced communication options, achievements, stat-tracking, and more, require players to be connected to the service, so we're encouraging everyone to use Battle.net as much as possible to get the most out of StarCraft II. We're looking forward to sharing more details about Battle.net and online functionality for StarCraft II in the near future."

So, an equal mix of piracy and Blizzard pushing its own gaming platform are to blame. Still, hardcore traditionalists who don't like change will likely be unsatisfied by this and shall continue to get all stroppy. You know what they should do? They should boycott it. I hear that's the cool thing to do!

Actually you can play Steam games (including Source engine games) over LAN.

Who's the stupid faggot now?

Anyone hardcore enough to lug their computer to a friends house to play Starcraft with them is inevitably hardcore enough to have bought a copy of Starcraft. Most people I know won't be BUYING a copy of Starcraft 2 anymore because they won't be using Battlenet, which is obviously the only thing Blizzard gives a shit about.

Why would Blizzard open the game wide open to piracy for some fucking scrub that can't LAN with the internet?

When you lan, there is no lag, if I'm at a lan I don't want to have to connect to an American server to play with a friends who are in the same room, and have battle.net lag up the place.

LOL at Starcraft plagiarism. They have all taken ideas from somewhere. Starship Troopers (the book), the Aliens's series of movies, etc. etc.

Anyways, I feel that Starcraft 2 should have lan play. Even if it follows a steam model where you have to connect to steam to verify the game before you can play over lan. I know I'm going to buy it (duh, Korean here). I know some people argue "well everyone has the internet now" but during my freshman year in the dorms, they blocked the ports needed to play anything online, so the two network connected floors (my floor, the seventh, and the ninth floor) lanned it up like no tomorrow, CoD, Starcraft, Warcraft 3. Without lan, our gaming nights would be pretty shitty.

Me and my friends have a lan night every two weeks or so, playing Company of Heroes, Dawn of War, WC3. We were considering trying out Demigod, there is, until we found out it doesn't support lan play. We just stick with Dota now.

Come on guys, you have to admit Blizzard ripped a lot from Warhammer and 40k. If they had stopped at Warhammer I could maybe give them the benefit of the doubt since those are pretty general generic fantasy concepts but Starcraft seals it. Terran = Space Marine, Protoss = Eldar, Zerg = Tyrannid. I'm not saying Warhammer is entirely original and granted War/Starcraft's background stories are sufficiently different to justify it but it's a little too close to just be "oh they're pulling from the same sources". Slightly OT but whatever.

Also, no LAN is silly.

Not really. Speaking as a "nerd" I have better games to spend my money on than a 150 dollar ripoff shitfest from Blizzard that wont likely innovate at all on the RTS genre anyhow.

I think its bullshit, they cant do anything to stop pirating in the first place. This is all just to push their Battle.net.

"Several Battle.net features like advanced communication options, achievements, stat-tracking, and more, "

I cant think of any of my friends that were into SC1 who could care less about voice-chat, achievements, or stat tracking.

Afraid to say that I'll have to pirate Starcraft II now. At least the pirate version will be fully featured.

How about your STFU, Timmie is saying you can play LAN games over steam offline without internet dumbass. Also thousands upon thousands of people still LAN so you're an idiot.

Haha, you seem to miss the point. Even if it is pirated, if the put a lot of work into b.net, pirating will get you nothing but a single player game.

The fact that starcraft is like warhammer 40k is because it was going to be a game based on 40k but games workshop pulled out.

Considering StarCraft is mediocre compared to Total Anihlation/Supreme Commander and a small handful of other titles this is a deal breaker for me. There are alot of instances were people do not have stable internet connections yet, not to mention this pretty much kills LAN setups (which is the only way to play the game in my opinon). Also, what happens when Battle.net's servers go down? What are people supposed to do then?

For me, this isn't a bad thing at all. I could care less if some people are crying over not being able to play SC LAN-style. All of my SC1 play was done in SP or over Bnet, so nothing changes for me.

@Timmeh -
The battle.net emulators you refer to do not, or haven't been proven to work with, the new Battle.net that is coming.

We haven't yet seen the full Battle.net that is being redesigned. I personally believe they are taking Bnet to the next level, possibly a fully integrated graphics interface, possibly even graphical representations of your characters in public areas...no matter which Bnet game you are playing.

I.E., BNet Home you could say, but a lot cooler than PS Home.

Didn't read through all the comments calling eachother Stupid Faggot or Cunt, but all that aside this will only hurt them.

I know where Blizzard's coming from on piracy, but speaking from experience, there's a huge amount of our military overseas in the desert with nothing but a laptop and LAN cables playing Diablo 2, Civ 4, Starcraft and Warcraft 3 without a possibility of bypassing government firewalls to get on battle.net in the few hours they have to themselves. Taking away local LAN support just deprives people like this of enjoying the game when they need it most.

I mean seriously, any company that thinks they can make something "pirate-proof" is just dumb. There's always a better hacker.

This really sucks because I like my friends and don't think it should be our only option to play online from across the city. Sure we could lug our computers to each others houses(just like LAN(which is WORTH it)), but his or mine connection couldn't support both of us very well in one location.

Also, internet cafes.

Everytime he makes a cheap jab at the L4D2 boycotters I can take him only less seriously as a journalist.

The golden rule for short news articles is sticking to facts and figures.

The number of people who still do LAN play is too insignificant for this to be an anti-piracy thing. I hate playing RTSes online, so... good job Blizzard.

PedroTheHutt- Really? Journalists aren't allowed to have opinions? Show me one article that is PURELY facts and figures. Get over yourself. And L4D2 boycotters are as stupid as anyone boycotting FFXIII because it didn't stick to the exclusivity deal with PS3.

lol at blaming piracy, and before you know its going to be on 360 and PS3 for so called "better sales" to, because they'll blame PC for piracy, kind of what crytech has decided to, as long as they support PC i am fine though hahaha.
