Blizzard: Battle.net will always be free photo

Every time any major news comes out about a Blizzard game, rumors always start to swirl around that Blizzard is going to start charging for Battle.net. Since I had never heard any official statement, I decided to find out for myself what the deal was.

I spoke to Chris Sigaty, the Lead Producer of StarCraft II, and asked him if Blizzard is, was, or will ever plan on charging for Battle.net. His answer?

"Battle.net will not be a pay service. By buying the game, you will be able to match and play with other people."

There you go. Free Battle.net for everyone! (Who buys a Blizzard game.)

The debuting feature of Battlenet that came with Diablo 1 was that "hey it's free unlike Tennet and Dwango!". Since then it has always been free for any non-MMO online PC game service. In this day and age it's financial suicide to charge any sort of subscription for a PC gaming service unless it's an MMO.

Amusingly since then the last two recent attempts to actually charge for 'premium' online PC gaming service were both done by Microsoft and both flew like lead tractors: Allegiance Net and Games for Windows Live GOLD.

Phew. I am a WoW subscriber since release, but I was very worried that WoW + Activision was leaning Blizzard toward trying to double their infinite money with Battle.net subscriptions.

@ShadowKirby
Yeah, no one said that but strawmen are fun to beat up!

Free, but no doubt still with ads. To play your LAN games.

Sorry, still not buying Blizzard's still alive somewhere in the Activision monster.

Absolutely great news! I was genuinely expecting Blizzard to start charging for at least part of BNet's service.

I'm still upset about StarCraft II's lack of LAN, but now I can forgo all suspicion and feel completely excited about Diablo III, which I'll be playing it as it was intended: online over BNet with thousands of other people.

@Knives
because it is one of games that is played on the most lans out there...it is like valve would deactivate lan support for their next Counter-Strike...

I'd hope Activision has no desire to step in -- Blizzard does alright doing their own thing, and I think they will leave well enough alone...at least that'd be my philosophy on the matter! :D
