Blizzard acquires Diablo3.com, Internet flips out, Blizzard remains calm photo
     Blizzard

Big news! Blizzard Entertainment has purchased acquired the fan-owned domain Diablo3.com! You know what that means, right? Right? Blizzard are prepping for the mega-announcement of the century, right? Right? Not so fast.

In a long letter to the community, the former owners of Diablo3.com (now known as Diablofans.com) talk a bit about the acquisition, saying it was amicable and that Blizzard was "really cool about it." Blizzard also made it clear that this move "shouldn't be considered an announcement for the Diablo 3 game." Because Diablo 3? Pffft -- who wants or needs it?

But let's get real for a second. Despite Blizzard being tight-lipped on the matter, a new Diablo game is as inevitable as me eating an entire box of Count Chocula if given the chance. That is to say, it's going to happen, and there's nothing my wife or physician can do about it. When it'll be revealed is an entirely different story, but my guess is that it will involve fire and lots of loot.

[Editor's note: This story had originally stated that Blizzard has "purchased" Diablo3.com, but that is actually inaccurate. The domain was simply turned over to Blizzard. Sorry for any confusion!]

I really enjoyed the clickfest that was Diablo and later on Diablo2. Nothing beat running around the hell levels in Diablo with a couple friends over LAN when finally a monster drops the holy grail of all weapons...King's sword of Haste! Diablo2 just took the formula and expanded it...im not sure how they can take it further in a possible Diablo3...

omg i just fapped to your awesome editing of a 3.

I'm not excited for D3 rumors, like i was with StarCraft. But if they did decide to make it, and did it well, I'd love to have it. but not having it isn't a life-ruiner for me.

I wouldn't expect this to be revealed as a project until SC2 gets unleashed upon the world.

Also, fucking-A-Yes! took em long enough...

I loved Diablo 2.
First game I ever played online.
Here's hoping that this isn't going to turn out to be like WoW, or I would be a sad panda.

As long as Diablo 3 is NOT/ does NOT:
1. A MMO
2. Have micro transactions
3. 3D
4. Requires a beast of a system to play
5. Adopts any form of "combat" from WoW
6. Is set in any location except "fantasy world". No Hellgate London-esque updating of the series.
7. Does not use Steam or any other form of online key validation except to play on open Battle.net
8. Does not allow me to freely play over TCP/IP outside of Battle.net

I will gladly pay my $30 for it.

I want to call it now... Diablo 3 will either be:

-A Guild Wars 'rip off'
-A PvP Focused MMORPG

My money is mostly on the former though.

no fools, they will stick tot he formula, but maybe increase the # of players in a room to 16 and have a market place where you can trade your stuff! w00t.

Please be the new console MMO that has been circulating that Blizzard and Microsoft have been working on.

Maybe this time the new Diablo will be better than a good Neopets session :-)

I am hoping they don't go the MMO route with the franchise. I guessing before the summer is over there will be concrete news on the title.

As someone who still plays Diablo II with some regularity, I'm excited about this.

If you read the article on Blizzplanet.com's main page, it says that Blizzard has also been buying domain names like crazy - including any variation of Diablo4.com up to Diablo7. That makes me think it may be just to maintain better control of the property as opposed to actually preparing for the next game.

But, I like to dream.

@Eschatos: There we no assholes to acquire the site. The owner fended off offer after lucrative offer to keep the domain in tact until Blizzard came forward with intentions to take it. At that point it was turned over in an act of good faith in return for official fansite status, interviews with Blizzard personnel and beta keys for upcoming releases for the community members.

WWI is, in all likelihood, the venue for this announcement. I believe SC2 is going to come out first, then WotLK and then D3 will drop last.
