As a hardcore gamer, I would like to think Cliff Bleszinski and I have a special relationship. His vision for games, primarily the Gears of War series, shares much in common with what I desire from a game – chainsaws, blood, and cursing. Yet, in a recent Reuters report, Bleszinski was caught cheating on me in favor of casual gamers.
From the article:
We want casual gamers to play the game and be sucked into the universe and finish the game. We want them to potentially finish with a friend and become a fan of the characters and the setting.
Oh really, Mr. Bleszinski? Is this what we have come to? You get really big and successful and you just throw it away to get a few Wii stragglers who bought an Xbox 360 without a hard drive? It doesn’t matter that your quote doesn’t indicate you attempting to court the casual gamer or even approaching Gears 2 as a casual game. It hurts to hear you mention those “other people.”
Despite my rage, I think I can go ahead and say good luck. Casual gamers buy handheld devices and let dust collect on the casing. They also like WiiSports, which is clearly beyond my comprehension to explain or dismiss.

I was moslty pointing fingers as the Wii, I've had people come over and not know a damn about anything I'm playing on my PS3/PS2/Xbox/Dream Cast but they shit bricks when they see my Wii....THOSE are the people I'm talking about.

The hell are you talking about? Mix said they had a shitty attention span, not that they were idiots. You know as well as we all do that it's true, how many people who "shit bricks" for the Wii spend any time on games outwith Wii Sports, Carnival Games, Mario Kart, et al? A minority.
And there are people who still play Wii Sports and Mario Kart.
Carnival Games, you got me there, I didn't even know it was a best seller until Nintendo told me.

Wait ... WHAT?! That's the guy that killed Unreal 2! God damn it! That is the ONLY game where that lone ending to it actually made me shed a tear! (For those who don't care about good character development, you wouldn't understand.) All that I was hanging onto was the hint that my crew might have still been alive, which I hoped would have been resolved in the sequel that never fscking happened because Legend got disbanded.
I now hate this man as much as I hate EA for what they did to Origin and Bullfrog.
As to the main thrust of the article, Brad's making it sound as though the dumbing down will be detrimental. Why? Just give it a "casual" difficulty level that takes out elements that real (cough) gamers wouldn't live without. Yes, I hate the term "casual gamer" as much as anyone else, but I don't see why for games like this adding a way to dumb it down voluntarily would be so difficult.
Also, DUDE HUGE.
WiiSports is insanely fun, easy to play and lends itself well to the 'friendly competition amongst friends' zone. Its not really that hard to understand its popularity.
