Bleszinski wants a 'real actor' to play Marcus Fenix in Gears movie photo

If you were a casting director looking to fill in the role of Marcus Fenix, who would you pick? Naturally, one’s mind would wander to men who may not be amazing actors, but possess truly massive muscles. Cliff Bleszinski wants the best of both worlds for the upcoming Gears of War film adaptation. He recently told IGN that he wants a “real actor” instead of a meathead.

From the interview:

Definitely not a wrestler. I think just go with a real actor. You know... like a Clive Owen type; somebody who can actually act and is incredibly charismatic. And they can put him on a workout plan for six months so he can build the muscle mass he needs.
As a frame of reference, I’m quite sure that Marcus Fenix could lift a semi trailer with one arm while using his other to chainsaw a grunt. As far as charisma goes, I don’t quite remember Fenix being anywhere near magnetic. If anything, the Gears movie should focus on Baird. He’s like FF VII’s Cid, on steroids, with an amazing vocabulary to boot.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

" I think just go with a real actor. You know... like a Clive Owen type"

We need someone who can belch out "FUCK YEAHS" like in the game while cutting off alien limbs.

Or just inject him with a gallon of steroids.

I always thought Marcus Fenix was modeled to look like Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst...Yeah, Lots of acting talent there.

Sounds like a perfect job for Dwayne "the Rock" Johnson.

Clive Owen could defiantly play a good Baird or Carmine, but him as Marcus? No...

I think that Bruce Willis has to be in the cast SOMEWHERE.

Sod Marcus, I just want to know that they'll rehire Lester Speight to play Cole Train on the big screen! The character's the pure embodyment of him! It just wouldn't be right seeing anyone else do it.

No,no...you're soooo right Cliffy. It would take a world class thespian to capture the emotional range of the deep characters portrayed in that game. Too bad Brando and Olivier are dead.

They should just get an unknown that can act and looks like Marcus.

I think AAA stars are a detriment to a movie, since you tend to think of them as (for example) "Angelina Jolie" instead of "Lara Croft".

Gears has some pretty deep and complex characters in it, you are really going to need people that can get that across.

There is alot of subtext in the game, and the lack of a well defined story to me just seems to reflect the idea that a soldier never really knows the whole story, just follows orders.

I think some of you in the comments are really missing the point - try to go into the second one with an open mind this time.

Clive Owen would be a good choice. He doesn't need to be massive. In fact, a Gears movie should stay far, far away from such ridiculous exaggerations.

Why don't you just use what you have. I mean the in game cut-scenes are good enough for me why I do I need an actor to in place of Marcus. Besides the whole movie will probably be behind a green screen and cgi blown anyway.

Since John DiMaggio does the voice of Marcus Fenix, let's get good 'ol 'Bender' all roid-ed and liquid-ed up for 6 months and let the chips fall where they may.

As NomadicTroll said, they should just make an all CG movie, or better yet, don't make a movie at all, and just release another game.

Movies are an inferior format anyway

I like the Mickey Rourke idea. He's even scarred up and shit like Marcus.

Also, Batista should be Dom.

Also also, the Rock should be nowhere near this movie. Last time I checked there were no Samoans in Gears and I'm sorry, but if you want to bring a character to life I think it's best to match their race/heritage as much as possible or AT LEAST try and make them look like the guy. As big as the Rock is, he just happens to look nothing like any of the characters in the game.

Which makes me think... he may actually work better as one of the Locust leaders. He's have the physical size to be intimidating and they could just put him in crazy make up and prosthetics and stuff. (I know that goes against everything I just said, but it would be cool.)

Mickey Rourke is a good idea, but my vote would go to Ron Perlman. He is a great actor, has a lot of bulk and can pull off the loudmouth badass persona while asleep.

Besides, he eats Corpsers for breakfast.

Clearly this role calls for Jean-Claude Van Damme or Dolph Lundgren. Oh wait... 'real actor'.

But really, is using someone with "star power" a good idea for a film adaptation of a video game? Seems like every adaptation with a "star" sucks balls. I'm just waiting to see potential abomination of Prince of Persia with Jake Gyllenhaal
