Bleszinski misses the point of Mirror's Edge, demands more guns photo

Gears of War 2 developer Cliff "Don't Call Me CliffyB" Bleszinski has been sharing his thoughts on all the latest releases, marking out the games that have caught his eye recently. In particular, he seems to have missed the point of Mirror's Edge, wanting to see more "gunplay" involved.

"Fable II looks cool. And Resident Evil 5 is next year, right? I'm dying for that, I loved RE4. Street Fighter IV looks sick, and Dead Space also looks solid," Cliffy began. "I loved Event Horizon and all of those movies, so they're making Dead Space for guys like me. That's my genre, and it looks great."

"I think Mirror's Edge will be great, too, but they're showing me too much parkour, I want to see the gunplay. I hope it's not all just running and jumping. As long as there's something chasing me...even Mario had Goombas, you know?"

Oh Cliff, I know all your games are gun porn, but that doesn't mean hot lead needs to be spewed in every videogame that comes out.

"What's wrong with him liking shooting games and wanting gunplay in Mirror's Edge?"

Absolutly nothing, but Mirror's Edge is not about the shooting, it never was. If that's what he thought the majority of the game would be about then he never really read or saw anything about it.

@Syn

It wouldn't have to be first person, and Sonic wouldn't have to do Parkour.
As long as they took note of the flow mechanic used they'd be in good standing.

That being said, if you swapped Sonic's texture in, and left the game as is, you would still have the best Sonic game to date.
Even if the random agents chasing you didn't make much sense.

Is our young Cliffy B the next Chuck Norris ?...

"I loved Event Horizon and all of those movies, so they're making Dead Space for guys like me. That's my genre, and it looks great."

Yeah, he is.

I like guns as much as the next guy. (mini-nuke launcher ftw!) But guns in a game like Mirrors Edge I think would feel a bit out of place. You can out run gun fights and disarming and knocking people down is a snap. No reason to stop and have a huge fire fight. Besides why have a gun fight when you can kick a guy off a sky scraper!

@Corak

Sure. And we blast him and call him the problem with modern gaming because of it? Wowzers. I hope I never mention that Gears needs stealth. I'd be missing the point of it, surely.

Mario needs more gunplay as well. So does Fable II and Street Fighter IV.

This "freshness" that people are spewing bullshit over looks absolutely boring as fuck. After playing the demo, I got the feeling that I had played pretty much the whole game. Maybe the game will stay fun for more than an hour, but I highly doubt it. Also, I really didn't feel any great sense of immersion while playing. Dead Space did a much better job in 3rd person.

You guys are being reactionary and misinterpreting what he said. He did not say "I want to see more gunplay in Mirror's Edge." He said "I want to see more of the gunplay in Mirror's Edge." We know the game has guns and shooting in it, but we haven't seen much of it or how it works- by far the most of what we've seen is the platforming. The little bit I recall seeing, in the sewers with the snipers, looked pretty awkward really. It's an iffy aspect of the game and I want to see more of how it'll turn out before definitely saying I want the game. How much action is there in the game? What's the breakdown of straight platforming vs. fighting? How often will those sections like the sewer snipers appear where you have to use a gun? Will using a gun turn out to be as awkward and unseemly as it appeared? These are valid issues.

This dude's a nut. There are plenty of opportunities to shoot things if you like, but that isn't the game's raison d'etre, is it? The headline should be "over-rated developer thinks there's too much parkour in parkour sim".

PS - anyone played the LBP Mirror's Edge level yet? It's delightful!
