Bleszinski misses the point of Mirror's Edge, demands more guns photo

Gears of War 2 developer Cliff "Don't Call Me CliffyB" Bleszinski has been sharing his thoughts on all the latest releases, marking out the games that have caught his eye recently. In particular, he seems to have missed the point of Mirror's Edge, wanting to see more "gunplay" involved.

"Fable II looks cool. And Resident Evil 5 is next year, right? I'm dying for that, I loved RE4. Street Fighter IV looks sick, and Dead Space also looks solid," Cliffy began. "I loved Event Horizon and all of those movies, so they're making Dead Space for guys like me. That's my genre, and it looks great."

"I think Mirror's Edge will be great, too, but they're showing me too much parkour, I want to see the gunplay. I hope it's not all just running and jumping. As long as there's something chasing me...even Mario had Goombas, you know?"

Oh Cliff, I know all your games are gun porn, but that doesn't mean hot lead needs to be spewed in every videogame that comes out.

Pft, really Bleszinski? He shouldn't really talk. His games don't even have gratuitous nudity. Now that's a real travesty.

Played the demo last night, and I was hooked.

I feel like Sonic Team has a lesson, or two, to learn from Mirror's Edge in the speed, flow, fun categories.

I finally got my hands on the demo last night and I am very impressed. I find the game much more entertaining with Runner Vision turned off, as well.

Personally, some of my favorites parts of the demo are jacking the guns from dudes and immediately throwing them away. I don't plan on firing a single shot, and I'll have a blast.

Oh dear, I think I'm in love with him. The combat in ME feels so awkward in the demo, I almost wish they just would've let it out and focused on creating some more levels or something.

Actually....my demo impressions boil down to:

Look around, see red, press a button on red surface....repeat.

I get what he's getting at. Can't really blame him if you look at his portfolio of games.

Not what I said at all :)

I'm just still on the fence for ME. I'm not saying I want rocket launchers in it, I'm just saying I see where Cliff is coming from.

The demo was interesting, great look, fresh gameplay and all that.

I'm just worried that the game will seem repetitive after a few hours. It does not seem as free-roaming as I would like it to be and the parkour paths look fairly scripted/linear.

That being said, I can see why Cliff would like a bit more variety in the scenarios prresented in ME.

Also, don't be an ass for no reason. WTF does tetris have to do with this? I'm a game designer myself and I have an opinion. Sue me.

@KGBrAM,

I'll see you in court... ;op

Sorry to seem a arse. I was just making a point about games being good with a simple structure and repetitive gameplay. It was a dodgy remark, I'll give you that.

Personally, I find the gameplay exhilirating. OK, so she hasn't quite accomplished her trade as well as me in real life, but it means I don't run the risk of breaking my neck.

I too am eager to see whether they actually add enough variety to keep things fresh. I'm sure they are fully aware of the possible reaction Mirror's Edge may get, all they need to look at is Assassin's Creed. I enjoyed that one anyway, I'm just looking forward to having some fun with this one.

I'd say i is the most addictive demo I've played in a long time, which can only be a good thing.

I think you really have to try out the time trial mode in the demo. I played the story mode and was kinda impressed. My friend hooked me up with the time trial mode and I got hooked. I seriously spent 3-4 hours straight just finding new and faster ways to get to the end of the run and trying to get on the leaderboards. It's really not about following the red objects around the stage, you can even take that option off if you wanted to.Like someone posted earlier, it really reminds me of what Sonic did back when it first came out and Sega should take notice.

I kind of agree with him. I played the demo and, while it was fun, I couldn't help but feel like there should be more to the game. I'd like to see the momentum engine used for this game plugged into more fleshed out experiences.

Imagine this engine in Resident Evil 6? The fight or flight reaction could actually be tinkered with in the player if the game was able to allow you to choose flight as a viable option.

Well the fact that he drives a lambo and works for epic games ( unreal engine...most poeple have no idea how many games use this engine), I doubt he even really cares.

He did somethings right, and what many people fail to realize is that he was probably just being sarcastic.

I'm 100% behind any game that can go skimpy on the violence and give me an excellent, compelling, and rich gaming experience. Having said that, I don't think Mirror's Edge is that game. That's just me, I know people are sniffing their own farts over this game (like I was and am over LBP), I just don't see the substance in it.

I'm also appalled at the lack of bear cavalry in Mirror's Edge. A game about parkour on rooftops of a sterilized city definitely needs some bear cavalry

I don't get these combat complaints, the melee system is smooth sailing after 5 minutes with that demo. Sure guns are a bit lackluster but it's pretty damn clear you aren't meant to be engaging in shootouts. Maybe pop off a few shots as you're running toward something but certainly not running about with pockets full of ammo blowing stuff away.

...You guys are really stupid...He's not saying "ARRGGHH THIS GAME NEEDS GUNS!! BAAAHHHH!!!" He's saying that he would like to see what the gunplay is like. What's wrong with that? And to all you guys saying "OMG CLIFFY B IS SO STUPID! GUNS ARE STUPID! I DON'T NEED GUNS IN MY GAMES! I'M SOPHISTICATED!" should really just shut the hell up because I'm sure 90% of the games you play have guns of some form in them.
