Bleszinski isn't exactly the biggest fan of the PlayStation controller photo

In a recent engagement in London, Cliff Bleszinski candidly revealed that he wasn’t the biggest fan of the PlayStation 3 controller. In fact, one can even use the word “hate” and not be taking his comment out of context. He told VG247, “I hate the f***ing controller. I’m sorry, I can’t stand the PS3 controller. I love the Blu-ray player. “

Forget licensing -- perhaps this is why Gears of War never saw this side of Sony’s console. Of course, the lambasting didn’t last long. Bleszinski then took the time to illustrate his appreciation of some of the quality games on the platform:

I think there are some great games for PS3. I think Metal Gear’s great. Heavenly Sword was great. But at the same time, right now, I’m always working on Xbox with Gears.

I can understand Bleszinski’s criticism in terms of FPS controls, as I think the vast majority of us would agree that Microsoft’s controller provides a much more fluid experience. But I think a third-person game like Gears of War could carry over quite spectacularly. Regardless, Bleszinski has some serious beef with the controller. Do you share his sentiment? Should we do a proper psychoanalysis and explore Bleszinski’s fantasies about controllers to get to the bottom of this?

i personally absolutely love the PS3 controller. Whenever i play 360 shooters i do find the 360 controller to be better suited, but alas my main source of videogame joy is not FPS games. I don't know how he can "fucking hate it" seeing as how it is more or less just a standard controller. the 360 has the same basic layout, just one of the analog sticks is a bit higher than it is with the PS3 and there are more triggery buttons... the face buttons and d-pad are exactly the same...

Is there really that huge of a difference between the two, apart from the analog stick's position and the dpad?

dpad on the dualshocks is nice. The triggers on the dualshock 3 are horrible. They are concave, so my fingers would slip off, and are oddly placed (somehow) so that I never even push the triggers themselves; I just wedge my fingers into the cracks where the triggers join the controller. Also, the stick placement is just horrible. And it doesn't have to be either! The only reason they keep it that way is because that's how it was on the original dualshock.

Does he develop games for the PS3 at all? Just curious. If not then its the same thing as a Microsoft rep saying that. As The Dude would say.."well..thats like your opinion man." I don't have a preference for either really. The 360 controller could be considered better for shooters I can see that, but it's D-pad is pretty bad.

Oh yeah, I also like the analog buttons on the dualshocks 2 and 3. But that stick placement just kills it.

Also, I think Cliffy B (if you don't want to be called that you shouldn't have made it up) is a kind of a jackass sometimes.

I'd give the edge to the 360 controller but not by much. The Dreamcast controller is still my favourite though.

I'd give the edge to the 360 controller by a friggin' ton. The d-pad is the only thing on it I'm not a fan of. The PS3 controller has awkward triggers/shoulder buttons, awkwardly placed analog sticks, and the tiny, handlish nubs are brutally uncomfortable.

I agree with him. I can't stand the dinky Playstation controller. The 360, d-pad aside, has really perfected the gamepad, in my opinion. It has good weight and feels great in my hands. (That's what she said, etc.)

I also want to put my penis inside Clifford B., for purely scientific reasons.

360 controller gets the edge from me too, the dualshock's analog sticks are way too loose and poorly placed for fps games to say the least, also can't stand the new R2 and L2 triggers, they're also convex so my fingers usually slip off or are just hanging on. Wasn't he involved in the development for UT3 on the ps3? Can't say he hasn't at least dealed with using the controllers. Either way I don't have too much issue with either controller. Have to admit, the 360 controller has a pretty unforgiving dpad, hard to ignore.

Both controllers are good as far as I'm concerned. You could argue that the triggers are better on the Xbox 360 controller and the d-pad is better on the dual shock but in the end it's just a matter of taste.

I think the Playstation controller is one of the most perfect controller next to the SNES controller. It feels right in your hands. The buttons are always within thumbs reach. It is a good solid controller. Tho, I do like the 360 controller as shooters go, can feel rather heavy at times. So I disagree with Mr. B about it.

It's not the best controller ever, but it's not awful either. Really, all of the last-gen systems had what seemed to me nearly identical controllers. The big differences between the PS3 and the 360's controllers now are what? PS3 has a better D-pad and 360 has the D-pad and analog stick switched?

the PS3 controller its so much better than the x360 one. Anyway, Cliffy B thinks heavenly sword is a great game so there is the confirmation that his brain is damaged beyond repair...

I don't get why the PS3 controller gets so much slack. While I like the position of the left joystick better on the 360 controller, the Sixaxis/Dualshock is still quite nice in my opinion.

The PS3 controller is categorically worse than the 360 controller, only the thing is that it's the comparison of several very small features that don't add up to much of a victory. Like the gold medalist over the silver medalist. He came in first but by what, a few tenths of a second? Not really much to get all excited about. Especially when we're talking about plastic button cases and not the pinnacle of athletic achievement. The PS1/2/3 controller is less ergonomic than the 360 controller, the joysticks should be concave and placed better, the triggers are horrible and cheap, and while the D-pad is better than the 360's, they both suck as D-pads anyway, one just sucks less than the other.

Honestly, the analog sticks are a million times more loose feeling than the PS2's.

I don't know if that's just the Sixaxis or what, but it feels so damn loose that I never feel that the aiming is right.

That being said, MGS4 controls great with it, so I'm sure it just takes some getting used to.

I loved the dual shock back in the PS2 days.. but the 360 wireless controller is just so much better for modern games.

Sure the d-pad was nice, but if you're that into using it- maybe you should be using an arcade stick. They are extra tasty.

I don't know about the PS3 controller, but if it's anything like the PS2's than I prefer it. First reason is the D-Pad of course, but also the 360 controller seems to have a 'dead spot' at just a little left of 12 o' clock on the left stick. Not a true dead spot, but it will switch you from running to walking for a split second.

Before anyone asks, I've tried multiple controllers and multiple games and it persists. I had my 360 repaired because of a red ring of death and it still happens. It's rare when accidental but I can do it on command now that I know where the spot is.

clibby most likely got paid to say that.

No really, I like the 360 triggers but the PS3 controller wins for all other aspects. Light, tight, it's been the better controller for years and will be in the future.

BTW...FPS = PC (duh)

The L2 and R2 buttons can be a pain in the ass to use if you have to hold them down for long periods of time, i.e. racing games, and I don't particularly like the convex tips of the analogue sticks, but it's still a pretty decent controller.

I personally love the ps3 controller. Never really saw the big deal about the triggers.the people that say they are slippery or don't work are so goddamn full of shit. what the fuck are you dipping your fingers in grease before playing with the controller? I can understand if it doesnt fit with the players hands maybe, but overall the dualshock is an industry standard. if it wasnt for that we wouldnt have the 360's controller and thats it. cliffy b can bitch and moan all he wants, but sony got it right the first time. microsoft changed it because they didnt want to be called copy cats.

PS3 controller aint that bad, but I dont like it as much as either Wii or 360's controllers.
Mostly just the analog's position, and the R2 and L2 buttons, but its not exactly something to stop you from playing with it.

I prefer the PS3 controller to the 360 controller because the sticks are placed symmetrically. As far as analog control quality, I just haven't noticed a difference between the two on the sticks. The 360 controller has a slight advantage on the analog triggers. As far as digital buttons go, PS3 has the advantage with a much better quality gamepad and pressure-sensitive buttons.

If Cliff doesn't like the regular controller, just code in support for a keyboard and mouse.

It's preferential, isn't it? I can't play 360 for long, my hands end up cramped. The 360 controller feels like a soccer ball with buttons, imo. I find the PS3 controller much more comfortable ~shrug~ As for FPS games, I hate BOTH controllers. Mouse + keyboard is the only way to play.

360 gets my vote. It's just simply more comfortable.

Some people are more familiar with the dualshock feel, so it seems more comfortable, but putting they stands on your keyboard up may feel good at first, too, until you realize just how bad it is for you.

the only reason the PS3 has an edge over the 360 controller for me is that their D-pad actually has some....padding. Me being a big fighting gamer, It's horrible that I can't play any 2D fighters seriously until I get my arcade stick. At least with the PS3/PS2 controller I could do said thing.

Still... Arcade Stick > any controller come to fighters. But I just hope this new dpad on the green controllers do some justice.
