Bleszinski found inspiration in film sequels for Gears 2, omits Robocop photo

In yet another MTV piece about Gears of War 2, Cliff Bleszinski revealed some of the film sequels he used as inspirations to the title. He cited Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, The Dark Knight, and Aliens because of their ability to transcend the first movie with a decidedly “darker” tone.

From the interview:

['The Empire Strikes Back'] is the obvious one that everyone goes to, because it's darker. 'Dark Knight' as well — doing what the first one did but also having a darker twist on it and going places the first one wouldn't have had the ba--s to go and also doing everything on a larger scale. I think 'Aliens' is also a great one. Seeing dozens or hundreds of Locust pouring out of a hole, whereas in the first 'Alien,' it was just an alien, basically. ... I wouldn't say 'Predator 2' or 'Robocop 2' or any of those. Although we do have our share of '80s Stallone and Schwarzenegger winks and homages and whatnot.
Omitting Robocop is always a huge problem in my book. While the second movie’s plot was terrible, there were some excessively evil scenes brought about. Remember Murphy getting cut into pieces, then wriggling disjointedly outside of the police station? I cried. Granted, I was seven, but it still affected me more profoundly than Dom’s wife-searching.

RoboCop 2 stands along side Gremlins 2 and Ghostbusters 2 as one of the most under rated sequels of all time.

Also, going "darker" just for the sake of it is lamesauce. Why is it that so many people think that the more feel-bad something is, the better?

As much as I disliked RoboCop 2, the scene in the beginning where they try out the new robocop designs and they all fail is hilarious. Especially the one that just up and shoots itself in the head.

@Haxan - Exactly, Haxan. Robocop 2 was brilliantly dark. A kid died on a stack of money!

Yeah...I am sure The Dark Knight was used in making this game. I mean it was out for a whole 5 months before the game was released.

robocop 2 is amazing
@Jonathan Holmes - you are exactly right

@CliffyB - Dark Knight? shut up asshole. Go find Peter Molyneux(sp?) so you can jerk each other off until you decide to make a new game.

Now while Robocop 2 and onward ripped the heart out of the first one. For a big, dumb, action-packed game like gears, RoboCop 2 is perfect. Robocop smashing (SPOILERS) Cain's brain into smithereens at the end was badass.

Did anyone else think of Return of the Jedi while riding the reavers through the forest in Gears2? It was just like the speederbike scene...
