Bleszinski finds romance 'hard' to convey, but tried anyway photo

One thing that most Gears of War 2 players could be finding out today is that romance isn’t always about hugging and kissing for the soldiers of the COG. One of the main subplots of Cliff Bleszinski’s latest offering is sidekick Dom’s search for his missing wife, Maria, amidst the larger scale conflict presented in the game. Recently, MTV Multiplayer spoke to Bleszinski about adding romance into a highly action oriented game and the reason it is not commonly done.

From the interview:

Well, because it’s f—ing hard to do, man. It’s really hard to do. I think we did an admirable job of it. Is it a Nicholas Sparks romance? No, it’s not. But there’s a little bit of heart in there.
While I agree that love is always a sidebar to blowing up alien’s heads, I found Dom’s emotional appeals less than satisfactory. If I didn’t have that picture as a clue, I would have sworn that Dom was actually missing something immaterial like a truck instead of a flesh and blood wife.

Bleszinski then goes on to note that “putting a little bit of heart in a shooter that’s full of ... brutality” is a good “priority” to have. He previously noted the reason for the lack of dramatic buildup is because he wanted to keep pace and not have “40-minute flashbacks to Dom and Maria dancing in a field of poppies...” In reality, I think we all would have greatly enjoyed such a segment in a Gears game.

Yes, I would have greatly enjoyed that. Is this the rumored special stage? Will someone ruin it for me?

Yeah, I give him credit. I mean, when Dom *spoiler* and then *spoiler*, I thought *spoiler spoilery spoiler*. So, yeah.

What's this about spoilers and dead wives? I just got my copy of GOW today and I don't need to know that Dom's wife died. Great, thanks for ruining it for those of us that JUST FREAKING GOT THE GAME.

* - I don't know what happens in the game, I'm just posting for funs. If his wife really does die in the game I apologize in advance for ruining a game that I haven't yet played for myself and you as well. As revenge, I juxtapose this offer. Spoil Dirty Dancing for me. I haven't seen it yet and am about to be forced to watch it by my GF and I would totally hate to have the movie ruined for me by revealing the ending before I watch it.

Meh I thought that part of the game was ok, but romance has definitely done better by other games. I'm just hoping and waiting for the day that games will reach the same level of emotional impact as some great films do, but to get there they need better stories, better voice acting, and better dialogue. Not to say that all games need to elevate themselves into a higher art form of course, because I also love stupid senseless violent games.

As long as the poppies aren't, somehow, another shade of brown, I'm all for it.

I just wish this guy would go away and take his toy chainsaws, up-gelled duck-butt hairdo and gratuitous "f---" ",man" brotalk with him.

Cliffy B is afraid to love.

But likening a wife to a lost truck would be an interesting perspective. "Man, I can't believe I lost my wife! I had just finished paying that thing off!"

i actually thought it worked well. SPOILER - I really liked the part where he finally finds maria and she steps out of the "capsule" in the image of his memory, but then turns zombocom.

CliffyB finds it hard to write love because his Gears team isnt loaded with any good writers.

I wish they'd stop interviewing this guy everyday. I don't need to hear more gears talk that either can be figured out or is just taking up space on news sites.

Dom's wife... biggest shocker in a game this year. I'd say bigger than what the darkness and bioshock pulled.

Please tell me this is the last game in the series. Tired of hearing about this game and it's creator. Or at least tell me how to block keywords in the news posts. Either is fine.

Give him a break. You'd all be complaining if there was nothing more to the plot than the generic Sci-Fi plot, it really doesn't affect me at all since it's a somewhat small part of the game and none of the gameplay (So far for me). Like anybody actually cares about the Gears plot.

Gears of War 2 is a really good game, but I think the story/voice acting is awful. And CliffyB is a giant douche.

Gears 2 is the best game ive played in a long long while, infact i cant stop talking about it. Adding the scenes with Doms wife was a nice touch, and ok so the 'lines' werent that great but it did add an extra something. I say well done!! Bring on the third installment!!

Loved Gears, even really liked the love subplot. I actually really enjoyed the plot of Gears 2, it had a whole bunch of really emotional stuff in there, and actually explains some stuff. Could quite possibly be my game of the year.
