Blast processing LIVES! A new Sega Megadrive game is coming soon

While not the most retro-minded staff member on Destructoid, it has to be said that I loved my old Megadrive growing up. Better known to some as the Genesis, the console that my brother and I shared saw a lot of use, as we teamed up to play Golden Axe, Streets of Rage and, of course, Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (even though I was always bloody Tails). It is with great pleasure then, that I bring to you news that a brand new game for the Megadrive is being released after all these years, the J-RPG which has recently been officially named Pier Solar and the Great Architects.

Developed by the Sega homebrew community, Pier Solar (originally codenamed Tavern RPG) is a traditional RPG that sees you quest for the fate of the universe. It also looks really pretty in that retro-goggles way. The word is that just like my favorite adventures of old, the game is going to be released in cartridge format. A downloadable demo should also be available soon.

While the game has had some online teasers for a while, it should be coming out some time in 2008. If you've not heard of it before, check out the trailer above, and the game's Web site. Is that not some lovely, lovely music?

Hmmm. I would be more interested if it were being made for the far superior Super Nintendo. I don't care how good the music is, the Megadrive sound chip is fucking terrible.

I don't like the art that end into it much, might try it if they release a demo ROM or something

An RPG on the Genesis? Yuck. Why not do one on a certain 16-bit console that has a GOOD sound chip?

Kind of makes me wish I had a Genesis. If this were for SNES (which I do still have), I'd be all over it.

I agree. Are we Genesis fans that few? I'd play Streets of Rage 2 any day over Mario Kart.

SNES sucked. genesis forever. i'm glad i still have one but i won't be buying this. isn't it a little awkward to be making a new game on an old cartridge system?

God, the character art is such generic anime crap. Other than that, looks alright.

Love it visuals in game, but the character design looks mediocre at best.

I'll still try to get a copy though.

WOO NEW 16-BIT GAEM.

Like Gemsi said, Sega systems never die, only the people that play them. Although LOL Satun because it rarely gets homebrew love.

Also, I'm glad they're making a Sega CD version too.

I actually prefer Genesis audio to SNES audio. Hahahaha...the sound for Dracula turning into his third and final form in Castlevania: Bloodlines is nothing short of awesome. It's an acquired taste, though. Still, anyone who doubts Genesis' power as far as audio goes need to play Vectorman.

I'm all about SEGA games. I left the console market when they did. I'll dig up my old Genesis and play this RPG for sure. Good graphics are nice to have, but game play makes the difference.

If it is a half-decent RPG, I'd like it. :O)

I'll have to check if my friend still has a Mega Drive.
