As for me, I'm not a fan of digital distribution; there's too little control for the end user, and there will likely be plenty of other games out there that deserve my dollar more than this.
*sob* we aren't selling games on pc even though we punish the people who legitimately buy the game and it is easier for piraters to play the game *sob*
http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news/2010/05/file-sharers-are-content-industrys-largest-customers.ars
"file sharers are the industry's largest customers... There does not appear to be a clear relationship between the decline in sales and file sharing." In fact, the study found that file-sharers often buy more content, especially when it comes to films and games.
There are two faulty assumptions the industry likes to make so they can play victim:
a) Every download could have been a sale.
- Not true. Some of those people could not have afforded the game at full price to begin with. But hey, maybe if they like it they'll snag a legit copy on sale later.
b) Piracy and Purchasing are mutually exclusive.
- People may download a game to check it out, then later purchase it. Or download it and realize it sucks, and be glad that they didn't purchase it.
On PC compatibility and system requirements make buying a $50 game a little risky - especially when publishers like to release buggy shit and let us beta test for them. Also, the decline in demos means it's harder to try before you buy in terms of checking system compatibility and whether you even like the game. Then, of course, you have people who own the game but download cracks because they find the DRM annoying.
Ultimately, though, the question is SALES. If your game will sell 100,000 copies on XBLAH and not get pirated (much), or sell 1,000,000 copies on PC but get "pirated" 500,000 times... your dumb ass should still put it on PC.
And piracy still happens on console. People were saying Arkham City was delayed on PC to reduce piracy and push console sales. Guess what? The 360 version of AA was leaked and on torrent sites A WEEK BEFORE RELEASE.
oh hey, thats like i how i feel about dlc! oh shit, i just said something about dlc...
You know who doesn't post demos of their games AND complain and point fingers at their costumers? the ones who know their game SUCKS.
I totally get that. I don't have as much of a problem with it as you do but I certainly acknowledge that the entire business model of gaming has changed in recent years.
fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu im getting old...
Also, when did this shitty game get downgraded to XBLA/PSN? And where is Jade Raymond? She loves Sharpless above all males after all! D:
I love the current practice of
a) Exclusive pre-order DLC
b) Review blackouts until release day
c) No demos, late demos, or demos as pre-order bonuses (wtf?!)
In other words, they're trying to get you to buy their $60 game blind. Such respectable publishers, I feel so sorry for them.
"100,000 stole the game!"
But 1,000,000 bought the game.
"but that's 100,000 we lost!"
What about the 1,000,000 you made?
Repeat ad nausea. Quote the indie bundles or world of goo whatever, the indie bundles have made a combined $10+ million for charity and devs. Sure, maybe they could hve made $15 million but why cry over something that could have happened? Continue rewarding people for doing the right thing and you'll convert people who don't.
That's Steam's policy and valve makes billions.
It sounds like ubisofts DRM strategy made people who were buying there games, not too.
Well done, sir. If a game is worth my money, I'll buy it.
Take Rage, for example. It's a fun game, but my playthrough only lasted a little over 7 & 1/2 hours. Is that worth $60? Not to me. I don't have money to spend on any game that looks interesting, so if I'm unsure, I'll download it. If it's good, I will most certainly buy it in the future. If it sucks, well, it sucks... I'm glad I didn't spend money on it.
These PR shitheads of Ubisoft make even paying customers look like fucking idiots.
Last game I bought from them was Prince of Persia, the cell shaded one. I loved it! But then they released the epilogue only for 360 and PS3. I was so pissed of that I never bought nor played any game from them since then.
For all I care they can go fuck them self when they don't make a complete 180 regarding PC gamers. It's disgraceful and why on earth should I support a company that doesn't have any respect?
I'm really tired of their piracy whining. Somehow they don't get that piracy is an issue on every platform. Why are they so stupid???
Oh and the people here trying to prove their own superiority by regurgitating the tired old piracy debate, please grow up. This is so tedious and boring it rivals the console wars.
Let's further assume the game's price tag is 15$. Steam gets roughly about 30%, so with 50.000 copies sold there will still be a sales volume of 500.000 dollars for Ubisoft (50k * 10$).
Why the hell this should not be worth it? Or is my maths off? :o
d) Collector's Editions only available until 3 months prior the game's release (Max Payne 3 CE only available until january 15th). That is the new super blind buy.
Also: Ubisoft sucks hard. Their DRM is one of the worst in the industry, it only got surpassed recently by EA's Origin.
I would love to play their games (From Dust, Assassin's Creed, HoMM VI), but i refuse to install this Ubisoft Launcher on my PC. I already have one game launcher installed, and that is by far enough: Steam.
And btw, in consequence i did not pirate their games. Instead i play HoMM V and Populous 2. :D
I can understand not wanting to deal with DRM, but it's no reason to not pay for the game. The obvious solution? Buy the game, THEN pirate it, or, at the very least, don't play through the game until you've paid for it. That way, you'll have paid for the legal right to play the game without having to actually deal with DRM. Sure, you'd still be committing a crime, but you at least didn't get something for nothing.
I know some of you may also be pirating it as a "fuck you" to the developer and consider paying for the game to be the same as supporting DRM. As far as I'm concerned, that's either just a hollow excuse to get a game for free or the result of faulty reasoning.
Now, as for those who are pirating games that lack demos to try them out, you have other ways to learn about a game. Playing it isn't the only way. Plus, who's to decide how far you should play into a game before you decide that you should pay before experiencing anymore?
Meanwhile Minecrat 4million sales, Skyrim 1 million in less than a week. SWTOR highest preordered game in EAs history, only on the PC. League of Legends 15 million people playing every day. DOTA 2, 20 million watching a stream of a beta tournament, Starcraft 2, almost 10 million sales. WoW 10 million people paying monthly.
TLDR IF you make shit games, blame piracy.
I was interested in this game, not so much now.
But clearly they don't care about me as a customer since they acknowledge that PC gamers are asking for it and this guy just blows it off as "bitching".
Back to the subject though, please go to the torrent site which has a name that fits it well and might remind you of captain Jack Sparrow (you know which one). Look in the Top 100 sections of PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 respectively, compare the amount of seeders of the games in each top 100 list. Come back here and tell me that PC isn't getting pirated the most.
PC isn't good for niche games? Well I guess we better get rid of all these sim games, the Stalker series, minecraft and pretty much half of all the indie games. This stuff doesn't sell people, all these devs are friggin' broke and will be gone in a matter of days!
And pretty much a good portion of these comments in the article solidify my opinion that most of the community here doesn't know much about PC gaming.
As far as the game goes, heck with it. The game was completely off the radar, borderline vaporware, and NOW comes as a downloadable title. Sounds like Ubisoft is trying to cut their losses by not making it a big bloated over budget physical release and instead, a bloated over budget XBLA/PSN game. I say the PC crowd probably dodged a bullet on this one.
If a consumer wants to feel insulted with the practices of a Company or how their PR's address us, then I will do so.
And don't I know Ubisoft too well?
Fucking horrid DRM and obnoxious rushed ports? Just look at From Dust. I tried it, a friend had it, and it failed at so many little BASIC levels such as camera control or just moving around it wasn't even funny. But the DRM took the cake. Forced Online and account registration for a single player game, with a fucking 3 minutes startup? Not thanks. And the game was even released a good while past the XBox for no good reason, which is a rotten practice Game Devs keep to for no good reason. It's not a wonder Steam had to refund so many people who bought this game, everyone was seeing trough that shit.
And prices? A lot of people noticed Ubisoft purposely overpricing games. Latest example: Rayman Origins. Shut up you "Genredoesn'tjustifyetc."-fags, I'm serious. This game is just released for $60, and on this Black Friday it is going to be slated tgo cost $30 instead. A whooping 50% discount on a completely NEW game. It'll cost as much as Sonic Generations. I don't know about you, but that is indication of the game's actual worth to me.
Ubisoft isn't a user friendly company, and I feel no reason to having people express their discontent with it, specially if they aren't learning a thing and just keep throwing harder punishments.
I also have a PS3 and an Xbox 360. I suppose I could buy I Am Alive for one of those instead. But now I'm not going to.
Fuck you, Ubisoft.
Case and point. http://blog.wolfire.com/2010/05/Saving-a-penny----pirating-the-Humble-Indie-Bundle
25 fucking percent of Humble Indie Bundle downloads are pirated? Are you fucking KIDDING ME? Can you guys even imagine that? There's another interesting number on that link though. 79,000 people downloaded the bundle legitimately. Considering the incredible deal that bundle presented and the "pay what you want" model, that only 79,000 people could be bothered when a single AAA title at retail price typically sells over 300,000 on PC is very telling.
What it says is, despite how many of us fawn over the incredible diversity of the PC market, not many of us are putting our money where our mouth is in a lot of cases. We'll throw down for Minecraft, but pirate Droplitz. We'll pitch in a few bucks for Plants vs. Zombies, but hit utorrent instead of Steam to get our copy of Shatter. You guys are acting like any quirky title is an instant guaranteed seller on PC, and it's clearly absolutely no such thing.
So yeah. Niche PC games don't do well. No, they don't do better on console. Yes, there are exceptions that manage to capture lightning in a bottle. However, for every Minecraft, there's a dozen indie games sitting on Steam right now asking 5 bucks, that have sold less than 20,000 copies, but I bet you can find them on pirate bay.
