Black Rock Studios is officially finished photo

The story that we first ran in July of Black Rock Studios, maker of Split/Second and Pure, being closed by their umbrella company, Disney Interactive, has become a reality today. In a tweet by former studio director Nick Baynes, we learned that after today the development company would close its doors for good.

This story is not all sadness, however, as two new companies have already sprung up, started by former Black Rock Studios employees. ShortRound and RoundCube Entertainment are continuing on where Black Rock started and I wish both teams the best of luck. Its always sad to me when a studio closes, but hopefully these two new development groups will be able to succeed.

Until they get bought up, bled dry and spit out just when they're revenue starts to plateau. Then they'll start a small development group and lather rinse repeat. Here's hoping they hit their stride for longer in the next run. Best of luck.

Personally I think the racing market needs more innovation or modes. Or a 29.99 price tag. There just isn't enough there for me to want to drop 60 bucks on a racing game I dunno.

I'd also like to see more games released at 39.99 or so and not have the "it must suck" stigma. Just my thoughts on racing games anyway, Blur was a huge over sight but might of done well at 39.99 for example at launch.

Feel the same way as N7. My new game list runs a year behind release dates because of it, and never includes racing games that aren't named Trackmania (which is $25 anyway). Bethesda, Rockstar, and Mass Effect games are exceptions to this rule.

Pure was awesome, shame to see the likelihood of a sequel squashed like that.

A studio gets gobbled up by a larger company, and is ultimately destroyed? That doesn't sound familiar at all...,

I still have the Pure/Lego Batman double pack I got free with my 360 sitting unopened on my shelf. Perhaps I'll play it this weekend, in memoriam.

I really did love Split/Second. Best of luck guys and gals of Blackrock! You know how to make kick ass games. Here's hoping you find someone to market it.

Yeah, I really didn't even know about these guys at all. It sucks that they had to close, but as Adam Duffles Duffield said, can't blame them for closing them.

Too many games, too high of prices. That pretty much describes the market in it's current state. It's great the the quality is up, but in this economy and no job for me? Yeah, I can't be dropping money left and right.

I really enjoyed Split/Second and still put it in the 360 from time to time to get some quick racing thrills. Best of luck to the guys and gals from Black Rock.

... it seems that game devs are very much like I.T. companies. I used to do recruiting for I.T. firms and they hire on when they get a project or contract and usually fire most of the hires when the project is done. If they lose the contract, they also fire the staff related to the project - but they usually end up getting hired by whichever I.T. firm won the new contract. It's a pretty fluid field with people moving around a lot, and only a small minority finding "permanent" work in the field.

I guess they get used to it somewhat...

N7 speaks some sense. The realistic racing market seems even more homogenous than the war shooter market. :P

I pity them. Disney just completely used them to get cash and then killed them. They were a very talented studio. I really hope that one day they band together and make the Split Second 2 and give the fans what they want. I still play SS1 till this day. Great game, great studio.

Split/Second was amazing. No other racing game captured the feel of being on the edge of your seat as this game does. There was also much room for improvement so no sequel = a shame.
