Black Ops preorders outperforming Modern Warfare 2 photo

If you wanted a clue as to how increasingly popular the Call of Duty franchise gets year after year, then look no further. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, despite its amazing popularity, is being beaten out in the pre-order department by Black Ops.

Pacific Crest analyst Evan Wilson provided the details, but added that he believes Black Ops' post-launch retail performance may not be as strong as Modern Warfare 2's thanks to "competition, weaker marketing, and the Infinity Ward situation."

I don't think any of those problems cited by Wilson will harm Black Ops' performance. As far as competition goes, World at War came out during a hugely congested November 2008, and still set sales records. In terms of marketing, it's only July and Activision isn't going to let this fly under the radar, and the Infinity Ward situation? Nobody really cares outside of the relatively gamers who check game blogs. Even among them, you will still see people buying Black Ops

I'm kinda getting tired of the military shooter scene.
Probably gonna skip out on them this year and play another genre

@Idevils Theory: This doesn't makes it a good game, all it proves is that people are to stupid to wait for USER reviews.

I'm unsure if i'll pick this up. I got the broken game that is mw2 just because it's always active and it's something to kill time with, but with reach coming out I may skip on black ops.

Reminds me of that MW2 boycott (which I am still a part of. Never touched the game, never will with the PC's flaws) that everyone turned on.

I know tons of people who love MW2 and say that Black Ops will suck...wouldn't surprise me to see them going on about it when school starts up this year.

Fucktivision will never see another dollar from me for this series. If it turns out any good, I will go against every fiber of my being and buy it used.

I despise Activisio, kotic and the whole CoD franchise. So why do I want this game so bad? Could it be the Vietnam setting?

Not going to support (money) Activison in any way in this franchise. Their bullying morally untenable profit margin arguments that sacrifice workers emotional state and churn cash in sequels is bullshit.

That said it would be interesting to see if people knew or cared that a chunk of IW behind MW2 are not present for this incarnation. If they draw any parallels to expected quality loss or if the IPs shear gravitas clinches it for people. Not insomuch as if they care about the business practices, but if they perceive value in the creative content of IW, or if they just expect Activison can find x person to replace y and it will be fine.

All must clarify I'm speaking of the franchise in general not the game specifically since it is Black Ops itTreyarch and this is not their first CoD.

I'll likely buy it, but I'm not 100% sure. I'm getting tired of FPS games, or at least FPS games that don't try new things.

I'm far more excited for Bulletstorm. Shame it doesn't come out until next year.

Call of Duty MUST HAVE Battered Wife's Syndrome. Buying the same old thing over and over again, each time it gets worse from Call of Duty 1. Each time they force themselves to buy the whoring DLC.

Really, there's no difference between WoW players and CoD players. Admit it.

I took a poll of what were people's favorite games. The majority of them said MW2. Were I to do the poll again this year, I can almost guarantee they would switch to Black Ops. I try not to say this about people often but... MINDLESS DROVES

I'll wait and see if they've changed the online play - otherwise I pretty much already have the game and it's not worth buying for the minor changes they tend to make. I'll just rent it for the short single story component.

Easy pass for me. I'm so tired of FPS's that whenever a 'new' one comes out I die a little bit inside and then I die even more when the games sell so well even though they rarely deserve it.

WTF? Do people have no morals? No shame?

Supporting anything with the Call of Duty name is just sending a messege to Activision that they can fuck over their developers and customers...yet still make a healthy profit. Just wait for the new Medal of Honor if you really need a military shooter. EA may not be the best, but at least their current CEO pretends to care about videogames.

People make me sick sometimes

this good actually be the nail in the coffin. They better be able to deliver a quality product with this many people buying or else buyers' remorse sets in and ultimately collapses the franchise. There have been a lot of bastardized franchises once the primary developer jumps ship.

I hope CoD fails in every way imaginable since they yanked dedicated servers and the PC console.

shocking isnt it?

They need analysts for this?

It really isn't shocking that the next Call of Duty game would have a greater number of pre-orders after each previous Call of Duty game has increased the number of people who play the games.

Not a fan of FPSes in general, but still I can't believe people are shelling out full-retail for 5 hours of SP content in MW2.

Let's hope they up that hour count in Black-ops so I can at least tell people I know they may be getting their money's worth.

If it's anything like the past 2 it'll be exactly the same as mw1 and I played that to death.

It'll need to be something out of this world to drag le away from mag.

Nobody buys CoD games for the single player. I'm a self admitted Infinity Ward fanboy and I've never even started a single player campaign in one of their games yet I more than get my money's worth. CoD4 cost me about 8 cents an hour for online play - That's a decent deal.

I wonder how many people bashing the game will rush out and buy it anyway on release night after reading pre-reviews.
I'm getting Modern Warfare 2 boycott flashbacks.
Which, by the way, I got off Goozex, so Activision didn't see a cent (I haven't bought an Activision game in well over two years).
Plus, as it has been stated, do we REALLY need another modern military shooter?

I bought MW2 new & sealed from a private seller on eBay, did Kotick get any of my money? Is the curly haired son of Satan going to increase the retail price of Black Ops in the UK? Should I go to hell for wishing him to be struck by lightning?

I want it but I'm mostly looking forward to Medal of Honor. I'm sure Black Ops won't be as broken as MW2 but I'll wait a bit. World at War was surprisingly good and I'm sure Treyarch will deliver once again.

Yeah Jim, like you say, I think the people who read/comment on gaming blogs forget that they are not in the majority. People have been getting into Call of Duty more and more since CoD2, and I would posit that most of them don't even realize that two separate studios make alternating games. Tons of people bought MW2, and only a small fraction of us (yes, I said us) know to be wary of Treyarch iterations.
