If you wanted a clue as to how increasingly popular the Call of Duty franchise gets year after year, then look no further. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, despite its amazing popularity, is being beaten out in the pre-order department by Black Ops.
Pacific Crest analyst Evan Wilson provided the details, but added that he believes Black Ops' post-launch retail performance may not be as strong as Modern Warfare 2's thanks to "competition, weaker marketing, and the Infinity Ward situation."
I don't think any of those problems cited by Wilson will harm Black Ops' performance. As far as competition goes, World at War came out during a hugely congested November 2008, and still set sales records. In terms of marketing, it's only July and Activision isn't going to let this fly under the radar, and the Infinity Ward situation? Nobody really cares outside of the relatively gamers who check game blogs. Even among them, you will still see people buying Black Ops.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
a good game
Probably gonna skip out on them this year and play another genre
I know tons of people who love MW2 and say that Black Ops will suck...wouldn't surprise me to see them going on about it when school starts up this year.
That said it would be interesting to see if people knew or cared that a chunk of IW behind MW2 are not present for this incarnation. If they draw any parallels to expected quality loss or if the IPs shear gravitas clinches it for people. Not insomuch as if they care about the business practices, but if they perceive value in the creative content of IW, or if they just expect Activison can find x person to replace y and it will be fine.
I'm far more excited for Bulletstorm. Shame it doesn't come out until next year.
Really, there's no difference between WoW players and CoD players. Admit it.

Supporting anything with the Call of Duty name is just sending a messege to Activision that they can fuck over their developers and customers...yet still make a healthy profit. Just wait for the new Medal of Honor if you really need a military shooter. EA may not be the best, but at least their current CEO pretends to care about videogames.
People make me sick sometimes
Your average 'bro' knows nothing of any type of fucking over. They just no that fellow 'bros' are or will be 'broing' it up on the latest 'brotastic' CoD.
Preach on brother.
I hope CoD fails in every way imaginable since they yanked dedicated servers and the PC console.
i have yet to confirm it, but my sources say:
CALL OF DUTY FRANCHISE IS POPULAR!
shocking isnt it?
It really isn't shocking that the next Call of Duty game would have a greater number of pre-orders after each previous Call of Duty game has increased the number of people who play the games.
Oops....thinking out loud again.
Let's hope they up that hour count in Black-ops so I can at least tell people I know they may be getting their money's worth.
It'll need to be something out of this world to drag le away from mag.
Nobody buys CoD games for the single player. I'm a self admitted Infinity Ward fanboy and I've never even started a single player campaign in one of their games yet I more than get my money's worth. CoD4 cost me about 8 cents an hour for online play - That's a decent deal.
I'm getting Modern Warfare 2 boycott flashbacks.
Which, by the way, I got off Goozex, so Activision didn't see a cent (I haven't bought an Activision game in well over two years).
Plus, as it has been stated, do we REALLY need another modern military shooter?
My only prerequsites are
-that you have a mic.
-defend from the front of the base.
-no snipers.
-engineers preferred on defense.
Just friend me.

Currently I'm ranked around 4000/250000
I think it's because Activision games suck.
But from all the upcoming games for next few months...only game that interests me is Kane and Lynch 2.Really loved the demo.
