Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

The above teaser is the first bit of media released for Nerjyzed Entertainment's upcoming Black College Football: The Xperience, and no, that's not a typo. I suppose the planned urbanization of the game's title is supposed to appeal to this thing's hypothetical Nubian demographic, but one gets the feeling that it's all a ruse to sucker in white teens whose grasp of irony prevents them from quite understanding why calling themselves T-Bone and Blackula is so damn hilarious.

I'd like to be optimistic and assume that Nerjyzed Entertainment -- a company whose corporate info page claims "Founded in 2003, Nerjyzed began with a four-member team of business professionals, entrepreneurs, game developers, designers, marketers, broadcasters and technologists with a proven track record in the entertainment, sports and video gaming arena. These founding members share the distinction of having graduated from Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCU's)." -- is really making a worthy effort to expose the rich, storied history of black athletics to an audience outside of those already familiar with Bryant Gumbel's HBO specials, but the realistic side of me realizes that this game is going to be purchased almost exclusively by the same people who bought Juiced or took their Mulatto girlfriends to see Drumline much to the dismay of their Fundamentalist Christian parents.

These children lack any viable culture of their own, so they're forced to imitate other cultures in a vain attempt at connecting with some sort of shared history. While their efforts are tragic when viewed in that light, watching some stupid honky blast Jay-Z from his parent's Honda Civic is really just embarassing to anyone within earshot, and I'd like to sarcastically thank Nerjyzed for allowing them to continue their asinine modern-day facsimilie of the punk movement.

[Jayfresh, thanks for sending me a tip that pissed me off so damn much!]

I guess it's JUST AS racist AS re:5... either you think both games are racist, or you're a really racist person. As long as a game doesn't indicate that one
race is more superior than the other, it's not racist. Right?

Didn't know people still used terms like 'Mullato', but you should feel free to bump Hov on whatever sound system you may have, regardless of what your social or ethnic background may be. As far as the game goes, it's probably not racist, but a pretty stupid idea. But then again, if they can truly recreate the atmosphere of a black college football game, they will have a game that blows Madden away as far as presentation goes. That's not too hard to do though since 2K5 still does it better than '08.

Well if you've ever seen the movie "Drumline" as mentioned above, music that really hypes up the crowd is a big part of the experience. Almost as important as the game itself. Madden, while not college football, has no presentation at all other than the players running on the field and bad commentators. When 2K had the ESPN license they actually put it to use and you felt like you were watching ESPN in 2K5. I'm still trying to figure out why EA spent the money on the ESPN deal if they didn't plan to use it.

BTW, I really liked juiced :/ , what's wrong about it? The driving style is little less arcade than the nfs and there was that gambling which i really liked, you could actually loose all your money and car In a single race and start all over again :) I really liked that, kinda hardcore. (liked, because I kinda don't know where I've put it)

Um... I don't see what the big deal is. Traditionally black universities and their football teams have some of the best rivalries in College Football. I don't know what it is like in other states, but I know the "Florida Classic" is huge. Every year hundreds of thousands of people come to Central Florida to enjoy the activities associated with the game.

I guess I am the only on (OK, not the only one), that doesn't think that this is racist.
And it seems that I am the only one (not really), that is not a sheep and doesn't write some retarded joke like "Jew College Football".....

Seriously, enough with all this political correctness. It's not like they say that white man can't run (even though in the last 10 years all of the world's fastest runners are BLACK, and if you call me a racist for that, you are a cunt), or that they say they have small dicks (like in 70 % of porn movies where black man f***k white women...).
No one thinks that the Cosby Show is racist, why? No one says anything about films with mainly black people, but now this is racist?
Seriously, stop it!
@JACK of No Trades - show me some evidence, that women respect men, and I will be respectfull to them....OK, that was a joke actually, but I really think that this "Men that like to hook women are sexist" argument is REALLY OLD. Yeah, women don't like to hook men, and they respect all men, right...

wow. this is one of those posts that show people's true colors. i graduated from an HBCU and i understand the need for a game like this. and what is upsetting about a football game set around the BCC?

is this racist? learn the meaning of the word before making accusations like that. in 98% of videogames, you mostly played as a white character. the only time you had black characters was as a gangster or a side character with no story. so why is this game getting so much talk about it and considered racist? if it plays well and is enjoyable, then give it it's props. if it doesn't, then it will be another bad game. race really has nothing to do about it. and considering the fact that young black men have developed a game isn't even looked at positively. wow.

and all the little Vick and other jokes shows really the lack of understanding in this, and why having a positive view of African-American life is needed, whether in a game or other way. it's cool to joke and be sarcastic, but ignorance isn't the modeus operandi. grace and peace

I'm not sure why it matters so much that white kids conform to their parents' culture. Don't most people experiment with self-identity growing up? It doesn't seem that different from an otaku, an avant-garde hipster, a hardcore gamer, or anything else. Lots of people feel that the mainstream culture (whatever it is) doesn't quite fit them, and seek another.

@Nex: And what's up with "Mulatto"? That's olde skoole, like "colored people". Plus, the word derives from "mule", the sterile offspring of a horse and donkey. Kind of uncomfortable.

Just shut up man. I own NCAA 08 and it's a great game, much better than Madden. And as for calling it the White football game is just retarded. This game will not have anyone of any race in it besides African Americans. To call it racist is a little extreme, but I agree with Doom on his point of view. The game is biased, no doubt, but if they want to try and make their college football game that replaces the great fight songs of UT, Florida, USC, and others with Jay-Z or Nelly, or where every QB is like Vince Young and Michael Vick, be my guest. Just sounds boring to me. I just won't be buying it.

ok, this isn't racist. Racism is the idea that a group of people are better than other people based on the color of their skin. this game does not suggest black people are better in any way shape or form.

what this game does do is call attention to the black people. This game is just as retarded an idea as those fucking all black people university's. Those university's are filled with a bunch of dumb fucks that don't want to see the real world. It is filled with people that want to live in a fantasy land of just black people. They are only furthering the separation of color in the United States. The fact some of these black people make such a big deal that they are black further separates them from society as a whole.

THEY are the reason that this country can't move forward in our goal of becoming a melting pot rather than a tossed salad. Yeah, we still have fucking hicks in the middle of nowhere that hate black, but those people are retarded. These people that go to university's and are making this game are supposedly well educated and should be able to understand the problem that they are creating. They are putting blacks up on a pedestal.

My junior year of high school I had the idea that there should be an all white university and I brought it up in one of my classes. People didn't like that idea, they got angry for me suggesting it. I know there was some university where a group of guys started and all white male club. People were fucking furious about it. But at that same university, and universities across the country there are loads of black, asian, indian... only groups. Why can't white males have a group? Because that is racist!

Now I have rambled on too long. This subject just gets me going.

You are probably going to get flamed like a mother for what you just wrote, but I think you made a lot of good points.

The bulk of what I learned in college was not inside the classroom, it was how to deal with other people that came from completely different backgrounds, spoke differently, and believed different things that I did. I think that going to an all black college is like going to an all girl's college; you get 4 years of comfort, but no necessarily 4 years of growth.

Don't get me wrong, everyone has the right to go to school the way they choose and I understand that for some people going to an HBC isn't an escape from reality, it is a vision of a world where blacks can succeed. I do however think that people with this mindset are becoming the minority.

A lot of people say today that blacks are racists. I disagree. The majority of blacks I have met however are seperatists. They feel alienated from the "main" culture (whatever that means) and feel that they have to stick to themselves to survive. One example, at my college, in 2007, black students still sit primarily in their own section of the cafeteria. They do this of their own free will and have no desire to go anywhere else. I don't get it. The irony is that they will never feel comfortable in the "main" culture until they go out there and socailize with other people.

This same theory applies to gamers. If I was only friends with people who could recite the Konami code. I'd have about 3 friends and have missed out on dozens of relationships, connections, and learning experiences because I wouldn't come out of my shell.

Anyway, I guess my point is this. No one flipped shit when Def Jam Vendetta came out. That was for all intents and purposes a "black fighting game". This is a "black football game" The publishers are trying to appeal to a different demographic and give an old formula a new spin. If people didn't do that every once and a while, all our video games would be plumber-based.

Ok, so us white males get to have a game a game that totally portrays our skin color right? White college football?

oh okay

you see people, its stupid shit like this that reinforces racism. Continuing to separate people by their color "and in this case the stereotype with ebonics boy at the end of the trailer" with this shit like "black college football". Maybe people like Sharpton, jackson, the NAACP, the hicks in the holliers, Deliverance esque, and the stupid ass developers of this game should realize that by continuing to put "black" "white" "oriental" and "hispanic"....mainly black infront of "insert sentence here" will only continue to seperate themselves from the rest of society.

but then again, as long as it is able to rake in the money "which this indeed will with the majority of....well can't say that color because i'll be accused of being a racist.", then who really gives a shit. Because the all mighty dollar is the undisputed ruler.

this is my honest feelings on the whole racism subject, take it or leave it.

Is this racist...no. Does this point out a double standard in society. You bet your sweet ass it does.

There are many double standards in society when it comes down to things like personal wealth and color of skin. The things we are allowed to say versus what other people are allowed to say (a white guy can't quote BET, but a black guy can). All this does is show it yet again. Now whether the right people in the world stand up and speak out against all these double standards has yet to be seen (aka don't bet on it) but this is such a minor quibble.

Just for kicks I wonder what the people who ranted about racist Resident Evil 5 have to say about this game.

You know, regardless of whether or not this is racist, this IS racial. And I really believe that, as long as blacks (though, you can insert any race into this slot) keep making race an issue, which this game does, the problems related to race will never go away. If there's one beautiful thing about professionally licensed sports games, it's that they're accurate representations of the racial diversity, or lack thereof, in that sport. NHL games are 99% white, because the NHL is 99% white. NBA games are largely black, because most NBA players are black. Baseball's pretty evenly split. And so on. That's just the way it is, true-to-life. Now you want to start splitting them up? Fuck you, regardless of your intent. Way to help hold people back, guys. I don't want an all-white sports game, and neither should you want an all-black sports game. Get your heads out of your asses.

Just for clarification, i never asked for an all white sports games, i was simply providing this idea: How in the world do YOU think a game along the lines of White College Football would be accepted in the world today? It would no, which is why none exist, and rightfully so. BUT you can bet your ass it wotuld get labeled racist. However, this game we are arguing about here is the EXACT same concept of an all white college football game, just with different circumstances. I think the idea of a sports game with the color of any race signifying it is just totally ridiculous and downright stupid because it does NOT help the cause or hope of racism ever fading away. As long as social groups and activist like mr. Sharpton continue to seperate whatever "race" they represent by acknowledging themselves by their skin color, then racism will never fade away, ever. I wish everyone would quit identifying themselves according to their theoretical and to be quite honest, inaccurate assumption of their "race", however, i can't exactly say that is a realistic possibility.

Yes, but why should Historically Black Colleges and Universities exist? Because of something that happen around 3 centuries ago? Because their skin color is different? Colleges are there for people to further educate themselves in order to be a more productive citizen and enlightenment, not to live in a false reality. HBCUs are just another prime example of the entire self separation thing, which is in my opinion, ignorant. The fact is, is that Racism is a fact of life. Its just like having a HOCUs "oriental" HHCUs "hispanic" hispanic, and a historically "insert skin color" college for every different ethnic group in the world. Ridiculous. The Truth is that people should look past the exterior and judge people by who they are as PEOPLE not by their "Race"<----THAT should be totally irrelevant. Should be....

What exactly is your point as it pertains to this game?
Vos's Avatar - Comment posted on 09/06/2007 14:31

Well we got off course a little with the historically skin color colleges of past and present.

My point is this. Look at the title of this game, then the spelling of xperience and the accent of the player at the end and then look at the various comments in this thread. Then put into perspective the reception this game will receive in the hands of the the majority of the American society which is largely ignorant "miss teen pagent SC need i say more?" and is consumed with the trivial likes of racism, materialism, consumerism etc, and has National Icons with the likes of Snoop Dogg and Anna Nicole Smith. The whole Black College Football thing IS racIAL and does give a sense of seperatism, which in today's society often breeds racism, and racism thrives with the ignorant, which often creates hate. Then ask yourself why would this developer create this game? If you answer that it wanted to bring out the culture of HBCUs then i'd say you are in self denial. When was the last time any business driven organization genuinely cared about the moral aspect of a group of society or as a whole. It creates it in order to make profit by marketing to a select group of society, sort of how Madden does even though the game is a piece of garbage, just in a different aspect. And "Black College Football" is controversial in the eyes of America whether you admit it or not. In today's society, controversy gathers interest, and this game will cost 60$ a piece. Then imagine what the media attention would be like should this thing succeed...you have another racism topic for the press to roll over in, and thus the further separation of people by their skin color because we all know how gullible the the American society is these days.

I think that is where the misconception about the racistness of this game stem from.

Like others have said, if it is a game about the rich history of historically black(attended and run) colleges and universities then this could be a decent game and a respectable cultural experience.

However, when, at the end of your trailer, you have a player in full gear acting like a hard-ass and saying, "This is how WE do it," that implies the game is based on Black PEOPLE and CULTURE, not the people or culture or history of BLACK COLLEGES.

Depending on which the game is actually based (not how it is marketed) would really indicate the level of racial bias, if any, in my opinion.

you know what, most universities are historically white universities because that is how things were in the past. a black person just could not go to most universities. But that is not today. None of the universities label themselves as historically white, in fact it is the opposite. There are laws that make them have a certain number of blacks, asians, hispanics... and that is a completely different topic.

but the fact that these HBCUs label themselves as historically black universities is just perpetuating the problem. Why can't they just let it go? why can't they just say, "we are this university, and everybody can learn here." instead of, "this university is historically black and almost all of its students are black." If those colleges remain predominantly black, then fine. But for the college to point out the fact that they are historically black is just stupid.

as for the "why does it apply to this game?" question. It applies because the developer makes a point that its founders are from HBCUs. They are making a point to say that this game is made by respectable black people. Should I respect the game more because of that? good for you, you went to college and now you are making a video game. you know what? A LOT of people are doing that.

i highly doubt this game provides a rich history of HBCUs.

to be honest, i wouldn't be surprised if it was based on the cultural likes of 50 Cent, or Snoop Dogg. Which could very well be considered a marketing target given their culture's success.

If it does provide that rich history, then i'd be shocked.
