Bizarre: Motion control shouldn't replace control pads photo

Destructoid has an interview coming soon with Bizarre Creations, the studio responsible for the Activision-published racing game Blur. We've been chatting about Blur's community features, and what it wants to do for the racing genre. I also couldn't resist asking for some thoughts on the proliferation of motion control, with things like Project Natal and the Sony Wiimote following Nintendo's lead in the hopes of capturing a new audience.

"I think motion control is an interesting development, but fundamentally not suited to some styles of game," explains Bizarre's Ben Ward. "Swinging a virtual club might be awesome in Tiger Woods, but do you really want to hold your hands out in front of you for a full 10 minute road race? I think you’d only last a couple of laps before you dropped the virtual steering wheel.

"So yeah, it’s an interesting development but I can’t see controllers being completely replaced any time soon. And neither should they -- the modern video game controller has evolved over more than 20 years to be the right tool for the job (in many cases)."

Personally, I'm just waiting to see how many of these motion controllers will end up in charity stores and dumped in the back of damp closets ten years from now. I have to say I'm with Bizarre on this one -- traditional controllers really are the best for most gameplay experiences, and no amount of waggle will convince me otherwise.

Jim Sterling structures another article all for the purpose to make sure everyone knows how he wants as little movement in his games as possible. He clearly works out religiously each day as it is, so why over saturate that rigid schedule with even more movement in his video games?

We get it, Jim.

Remeber what Kudo said Jim:

At best, motion control is suppliment to a standard controler. This is why natal might work. It'll be there for games that benefit from motion but not force feed it to you like the Wii.

Yes, I'm well aware he will. At it's core, it's a test. Will he take the bait? Infantile journalism beckons infantile behavior.

Well said! Thoughtful, profound, insightful. It's been terrible having to suffer through it, but if we all pull together people, we can beat this vile thing.

We can!

I believe it was Bizarre that mentioned the problem of tiring motion control in this article, not me. Perhaps if you were capable of reading and not just running your mouth, you'd be able to comprehend who said what in the above article. Don't worry, keep practicing your reading ability and you'll eventually get it.

I think I'm one of the few people who like the Wiimote+Nunchuk, not due to motion control, but as a controller itself.

Anyways, motion control I feel should be optional in games, even though I only own a Wii as a new(er) console, I like that a lot of the games included only a few motion controls, and even then they usually just consist of the oh so aptly named "waggle", which takes next to no effort to pull of.

I would take Wiimotes over Natal anyday, at least I can still be lazy while playing.

The difference is that analog sticks and more buttons improved gameplay. Motion controllers are different, but not always better. Some games benefit greatly from motion control. Something like golf or tennis is great with a motion controller. But it can really get in the way, too. I think Mario Galaxy would've been way better with a wavebird.

I understand the point your trying to sarcastically make, but it's kind of an invalid argument.

This discussion is very similar to Paper vs Digital. Although one thing might look like a really great idea it will never replace the other.

I rather read a real book on printed on paper than in digital form. Just like I rather play games while sitting on my buttocks in my comfortable chair than jumping around in front of my TV while getting arm cramps.

I support innovation but only to a certain degree.

Well obviously! i never got the whole motion hate thing. If we can have gaming PCs with keyboards and mice and we can have some consoles with over complicated arragements of buttons why can't we have some motion control gaming too? Does anything need to be replaced?

I know what can Blur better: fun. Oh, and originality.

This game sucked. I played it at E3 with high hopes and they were completely dashed by uninspired level design and unoriginal gameplay.

Split/Second is the arcade racer to beat at this point if you ask me.

Wrong. He mentioned they don't work with every game, and even Nintendo agrees (Wiimote sideways option and Classic Controller). You twisted his words.

I just have to say...
I LOVE my wii.
Mainly because of the motion controls. I may be one of the few, but I can drive for about 20 minutes straight just goofing off in Mario kart. Yes, motion controls aren't suited to everything, but driving and shooting games really benefit imho.

I believe that holding out your hands in a steering wheel shape or holding a controller is the same thing......both have you holding an object be it invisible or real for an extended period of time.

My point:

If you don't get tired holding a PS3/Xbox360 controller you certainly aren't going to get tired holding a weightless imaginary controller now are you BIZARRE, i love your games but you seriously need to shut up on trivial matters.

I also believe that controllers aren't going to get replaced with motion controllers any time soon nor do i want that, i just think his argument is stupid.

@KongsNutz: So you play holding your controller straight out in front of you? Try holding your arms straight in front of you for fifteen to thirty minutes straight. Make sure to keep them rigid, too, because you wouldn't want the car to swerve off the road if you should need to do something like scratch your nose.

"..BIZARRE, i love your games but you seriously need to shut up on trivial matters. "

It's an interview. In an interview, when you are asked a question, you are normally expected to give your opinion.

Yeah--Wii fit would be WAY cooler with a classic NES controller.

Sounds like a fair review with some solid points to me. I wouldn't want to see some of my favorite series to receive such a sloppy treatment.
