Destructoid has an interview coming soon with Bizarre Creations, the studio responsible for the Activision-published racing game Blur. We've been chatting about Blur's community features, and what it wants to do for the racing genre. I also couldn't resist asking for some thoughts on the proliferation of motion control, with things like Project Natal and the Sony Wiimote following Nintendo's lead in the hopes of capturing a new audience.
"I think motion control is an interesting development, but fundamentally not suited to some styles of game," explains Bizarre's Ben Ward. "Swinging a virtual club might be awesome in Tiger Woods, but do you really want to hold your hands out in front of you for a full 10 minute road race? I think you’d only last a couple of laps before you dropped the virtual steering wheel.
"So yeah, it’s an interesting development but I can’t see controllers being completely replaced any time soon. And neither should they -- the modern video game controller has evolved over more than 20 years to be the right tool for the job (in many cases)."
Personally, I'm just waiting to see how many of these motion controllers will end up in charity stores and dumped in the back of damp closets ten years from now. I have to say I'm with Bizarre on this one -- traditional controllers really are the best for most gameplay experiences, and no amount of waggle will convince me otherwise.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
We get it, Jim.
Shame he'll ignore your default avatar.
IT'S NOT FUCKING WAGGLE!!
But Bizarre is correct, i still love all those shining controllers.
We can!
I believe it was Bizarre that mentioned the problem of tiring motion control in this article, not me. Perhaps if you were capable of reading and not just running your mouth, you'd be able to comprehend who said what in the above article. Don't worry, keep practicing your reading ability and you'll eventually get it.
Only if I can do it to you too.
Anyways, motion control I feel should be optional in games, even though I only own a Wii as a new(er) console, I like that a lot of the games included only a few motion controls, and even then they usually just consist of the oh so aptly named "waggle", which takes next to no effort to pull of.
I would take Wiimotes over Natal anyday, at least I can still be lazy while playing.
I understand the point your trying to sarcastically make, but it's kind of an invalid argument.
I rather read a real book on printed on paper than in digital form. Just like I rather play games while sitting on my buttocks in my comfortable chair than jumping around in front of my TV while getting arm cramps.
I support innovation but only to a certain degree.
This game sucked. I played it at E3 with high hopes and they were completely dashed by uninspired level design and unoriginal gameplay.
Split/Second is the arcade racer to beat at this point if you ask me.
Wrong. He mentioned they don't work with every game, and even Nintendo agrees (Wiimote sideways option and Classic Controller). You twisted his words.
I LOVE my wii.
Mainly because of the motion controls. I may be one of the few, but I can drive for about 20 minutes straight just goofing off in Mario kart. Yes, motion controls aren't suited to everything, but driving and shooting games really benefit imho.
My point:
If you don't get tired holding a PS3/Xbox360 controller you certainly aren't going to get tired holding a weightless imaginary controller now are you BIZARRE, i love your games but you seriously need to shut up on trivial matters.
I also believe that controllers aren't going to get replaced with motion controllers any time soon nor do i want that, i just think his argument is stupid.
"..BIZARRE, i love your games but you seriously need to shut up on trivial matters. "
It's an interview. In an interview, when you are asked a question, you are normally expected to give your opinion.
