Personally, I think if it had released even a year earlier, people would be a lot more hyped about it. To me, it seems like most people have accepted motion controls as one aspect of gaming rather than a revolution, and I think the sales of Natal/PS3 Arc will demonstrate this.
Great job guys, loved episode one and cannot wait to hear what the future has in store for this show. :)
I'm curious about your opinions on Yakuza 3's cut content, although sega says the cuts are minimal, the exclusion of the host clubs removes hours of gameplay and specific mechanics from the US version.
Also, what's up with this generation and shipping unfinished or broken games? Namco's recent Tales of Graces recall in Japan made me wonder if developers are just getting lazy or if publishers are just saying "Ship it on time, we can patch it later!"
Reference to Mega Man 10, but not neglecting previous question, I want to ask about Mega Man 9's DLC. The Endless Attack mode specifically. I know Tron Knotts enjoyed it, as did myself, and I was anxious to hear thoughts on it. Proto Man and the other DLC necessary discussion. I'm hopeful for a new Endless Attack.
You called?
Sorry, couldn't help myself.
Anyway MY QUESTION: Do you think that the less than stellar Robot Master names in Mega Man 10 means that the game might not be so great, or will it pull a Mega Man 4 and manage to overcome the shitty names?
Regarding RFGO!, check out this thread in the forums. http://www.destructoid.com/forum/showthread.php?t=14908&page=12
I heard chad might have been involved in a sega podcast with Jim Sterling, but I haven't heard a thing about that for some time...
<3 ya Tascar!
At the moment it seems like it's pretty much Capcom with Megaman and things like Dark Void Zero. Even with games going for retro-styled throwbacks like Sonic 4 and New Super Mario Bros the look decidedly different and modern from the titles that started the franchises.
I kind of anticipated that response so I will ask you the following in response:
Would you be willing to trade Final Fantasy IV all the way up to and including Final Fantasy XIII for 10 more Final Fantasy game in the 8-bit paradigm? I picked Final Fantasy purely because on your information page, you cite Final Fantasy VI as one "of the finest games ever made" but you can substitute whatever series you see fit into that same question.
Just to respond directly to you: I do not deny that there is the possibility of additional meaningful exploration of low bit era design. It's not exactly the same thing but when I recently played Dragon Quest V on the DS (originally for the SNES), I realized that there was a huge opportunity for RPG game design exploration in the 16-bit space that had been completely forgotten due to how dominant the Final Fantasy series became. So in this regard, I agree with you that there are merits to exploring older game design spaces.
That being said, I have not seen it in Mega Man 9 and it doesn't seem that way in what I see of Mega Man 10. If I recall the last time I debated the merits of Mega Man 9 on Dtoid, I seem to recall that even its most argent defenders defended the game purely in terms of solidity and polish of design and not exploration of any new concepts or ideas as you are advocating.
<3 you too Tubatic. The Protoman avatar brings a smile to my face.
This got me thinking. As much as I like the original Mega Man games, I absolutely loved the Mega Man X series! But that series has gotten more off-base than the original ever did (bad 3D graphics and voice-acting.) With the success of bringing Mega Man back to his 8 bit glory, do you think there's any chance Capcom might do something similar with Mega Man X in 16 bit graphics? Would you be excited for this if it happened?
Also, what video game character do you wish had an action figure?
I ask because I've been impressed with everything I've seen so far of Natal and whatever the PS3 controller will be named, but I always come back to the thought that no matter how fluid or seamless some form of motion control was, I'd always take the controller if offered the option without a second thought.
"If you could get mega man 10 to have sex with 3d dot heroes, would the offspring be a new pixelated mega man legends, a new MM powered up, or something else?"
is appropriate :P, anyway, can't wait to hear it!
Would I trade getting those really good FFs for more retro FF? No way, in hindsight: some of my favorite Final Fantasy moments have happened in the back half of the franchise.
Mega Man, I feel, is sort of a unique case, because for so many iterations, alot of the basic stuff just didn't change: the change was much more level/game design, and less about making Mega Man, on a fundamental level, look or control different.
Certainly, Inafune did it for the Nostalgia. He said so. But the net effect is the same: Mega Man plays like Mega Man, and here's the new stuff on top of that.
Could they do something great/world changing by slathering innovation over the genre? Most likely! Would I love that? Very likely!
But is getting a continuation of that solid and sound game design that I still enjoy from 2-6 a fair trade off for that innovation? I'd say sure!
I do indeed like chocolate pancakes, and I would likely like chocolate pancakes with Future Tech II. But if my favorite restaurant wants to keep coming out with chocolate pancakes using different brands of chocolate, I think I'm still winning.
Do ya'll think MegaMan Legends 3 could work well on a current gen console?
Can MegaMan 10 and maybe a retromake Megaman X do anything really unique and/or new that'll stand out from predecessors? If so, what?
And will Natal actually do anything "more than casual gamers" will care about?
Also, great job on the show, guys. :)
More seriously, wouldn't you like to see a 2-D HD Mega Man? Come on. I LOVE MM either way, but after 10, I wanna see something. 8-bit style with HD in 1080p sounds glorious. A new X game in HD would make me froth. Not just from the mouth...
My question: I've been consuming Kingdom Hearts material at a shocking rate lately, and I'm curious on all of your opinions on the franchise, and if you're as ridiculously excited for Birth By Sleep as I am.
A small mention of MealtimeStrategy.com would be lovely please! Especially if you're discussing MegaTen, as we posted a MegaTen-inspired cocktail recipe for the site launch last week!
Hope other Dtoid writers can occasionally guest too...
What are your thoughts on games like Super Mario Galaxy 2, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, where the basic gameplay remains unchanged from its prequel(s), and games like Metroid Prime, Metroid: Other M, and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, where gameplay style and/or other elements are quite changed from the roots of the series? Is it lazy to not try to make any serious innovations, or is radical departure from previous gameplay too big of a risk/unfaithful to a series roots?
I'm personally excite for both Galaxy 2 and Other M,
