I really wish more people would have played P3. The GB endurance run did a great job of getting people interested in the series so hopefully that will mean better budget for upcoming Persona titles.

Thats some gret news. Looking forward to new episode! Can you talk a little about original Persona remake for the PSP and for upcoming RPGs you guys are excited about.
First, gotta take this opportunity to say thanks to Collete and Dale for turning me onto P4. Would NEVER have played it if it weren't you guys talking it up.
Second, with regard to last week's podcast, I am totally with Collete on how awesome the music for Xenoblade sounds. When I read that both Shimomura AND Mitsuda were working on it, I almost started squealing with nerd glee.

If you could combine various aspects of the 4 Persona games to make the ULTIMATE (echo, echo, echo) Persona game, what would they be and why?
P3 gets a lot of love from the fan base, but I'd love to see more towards P4. I thought it was the better game both in terms of game mechanics and story. Despite a slightly darker start to the game, Persona 4 had a lot more warmth and the protagonist seemed to have a personality of his own, rather than the apathetic look and feel of P3's Protagonist. And despite being just as long, P4 felt like you got through it quicker, making you more likely to dive back in to experience everything from a slightly different viewpoint.
Looking forward, do you want Persona 5 to have a similar style to the last two games, or would you like to see them risk something new once again?

What I didn't like about P4 mostly was that you had to complete the 80+ hour game twice in order to see the true ending. I really felt the story to P3 was stronger more was at stake even though the story itself was more cliche. The stake of time itself was gonna be destroyed if you didn't succeed, the characters all had reveals about there person that took time and weren't just revealed before a boss fight.
The characters over all in P4 weren't as interesting to me with the exception of Kanji. He really struggled with who he was throughout the game. The other characters seemed to just be RPG character stand-ins. I really wanted to like Chie but after her boss fight she really didn't seem to go anywhere else as a character. Rise was pretty interesting mostly for her actions during the King's game.

For those of you that played Persona 4, I'm curious how you all felt about how they treated Kanji being gay. I think that if you S-Linked up with him to lv. 10, he could be your boyfriend.

Zengaijin: Not really sure what you mean by having to beat P4 twice, but the true end is available on the very first playthrough as long as you know how to access it.

Kanji technically wasn't "gay", he was only Bi at best, since he was clearly attracted to some of the female characters as well. It's actually quite possible that he wasn't attracted to men at all, but rather just insecure with himself and his taste in hobbies. It might have been nice if they addressed the issue more clearly, but I don't think it's so bad that they left it ambiguous.
As for your other question, if you're just talking about the Persona series I think they're all worth giving a shot, though if nothing else I'd at least give 2 a try. (It's a two part game, so remember to play Innocent Sin before Eternal Punishment.)
If you mean the SMT series as a whole, there's plenty worth playing. SMT: Nocturne, Digital Devil Saga, Devil Survivor, and Strange Journey are good games to try though.

I felt more engaged with my party and closer to them as a result.

I wish more games would follow the flow of Devil Survivor. Events happen and you have to make a decision as to which ones are most important to you as a player. You can't do them all, and it just forces you to play it a different way on the second playthrough. It seems to be Japans answer to Bioware's renegade/paragon playthrough as means of rewarding multiple playthroughs. I know Japan had this method before Bioware with some visual novels, but those never come over.

I'd like to chime in on what you guys think about the localization barriers. In Raidou Kuzonoha 1 (My first foray into SMT), I was lost in how Japanese the area names around me were. I'd have to go to some place that sounded Japanese and hopefully I'd remember that name. I didn't seem to have as much of an issue diving into Nocturne or Devil Survivor, but that did stick with me as I haven't revisited Raidou Kuzunoha 1 in a while.

What do you guys name your characters in SMT? I always name mine Hiro Yui just as my sad way of being clever by putting homages to Hero from Dragon Quest and Heero Yuy from Gundam Wing.

@Conrad Zimmerman: I recently played and completed Bioshock 2 and remembered your comment in a previous ep about something subtle the devs did in the ending, having seen the ending quite a few times now i can't seem to notice anything unusual, could you elaborate on what it was please? i'm intrigued by what i'm missing.

Dale: What do you think is the best game in the Shin Megami Tensei franchise? I'm a huge fan, but I just got into it and have only completed Persona 4 and Persona 3 FES. I'm starting Nocturne sometime.
@ EdgyDude- I believe Josh is working on the Sakura Wars review. I have the game, haven't finished it yet, but I can tell you that I love it. It's like Phoenix Wright with occasional turn-based mech battles, and a more cohesive story.
