Oddly enough, I put the GameCube with the N64 in terms of strength, but Wind Waker was the only GameCube game that blew me away. :P
My favorite older console is the Dreamcast and that's mainly because of Power Stone 1 & 2 and Shenmue. Didn't play much else on it besides Sonic Adventure. As far as newer consoles go I'm in the PS3 group although my Wii gets just as much play time.
Also Jonathan when did Rearmed come out for WiiWare or did it get it on their via Homebrew and that's why you didn't want your Wii to update?
It's so evil!
@ Setre- Rearmed didn't come out for WiiWare, but it did get a update that made it easier, and in my opinion, less fun. I never accepted the update, but those that did were often disappointed with the changes.
On WiiWare, they did update Gradius Rebirth and Bit.Trip BEAT. I never got the Gradius update, but the BEAT update was actually good stuff. It made some of the purple beats easier to see, and changed the save system so you no longer need to get a high score to record your progress.
As for consoles my favourite past console is the PlayStation (more old than retro really) and my current favourite is the PS3, though I find myself disappointed with all of this generations machines. I was surprised to hear everyones' thoughts on the N64, I liked it so much I bought two of them. I found it typical for a Nintendo console in that there are a bunch of high-quality games (usually first or second party) and then not much else. The competition had more to offer but it was always worth buying a Nintendo machine for those few gems.
Um, responding a bit to the discussion about the Game OverThinker piece... I can't even begin to describe the level of cultural self-righteousness he just totes about as fact (and he does make claims to being "the hard truth" that the video game "community" needs). I think the question that needs asking is: Why do Gamers need to forcefully conform themselves to the standards of mainstream American society? Letting alone the fact that there *is no mainstream American culture* -- it's made up (no points for guessing by who). Ever read Nesting Orientalisms? Le sigh.
Oh and Nintendo does sell a USB-ethernet adapter for the Wii for $25, which is quite a bit less than the 360's WiFi adapter. I would guess at this point there are more people with WiFi than there are people who put their wired routers behind their TVs.
Enjoyed all the discussions. I too only played a few games on N64, namely StarFox. My fav old console was the NES while the first Xbox was my favorite last gen system thanks to the Oddworld series and Splinter Cell, though by the end of its life I became disillusioned with gaming. It felt like everyone was doing the same thing. The promise of the Wii brought me back.
