I don't claim to be have any sort of definitive or authoritative knowledge of retro gaming. I was born in 1987 -- I've never even heard of the Magnavox Odyssey². One of the things that I like about Robotube Games' Bit Museum video series is that I always feel like I learned something afterwards.

In any case, the Odyssey² was a contemporary of the Atari 2600, but a lack of third-party support kept it from creating the legacy that Atari has managed to leave behind. Nevertheless, it sold about two million units -- not bad for a console no one's ever heard about. If I ever sell two million anythings, I'll be pretty happy -- excepting a trip to the sperm bank.

While host Jason Cirillo is at his best when he's just hanging out and chatting about old consoles, the Robotube guys are trying to mix it up. Episode 3 features a sort of faux-ad for cartridges with handles that falls a little flat, but it's still a good way to spend seven mintues of a (rainy, slightly sick) Saturday afternoon.

No, seriously. Internet videos are the best way to cure a hangover. It wouldn't hurt to check out episodes 1 and 2, either. Trust me.

I really enjoy these Bit Museum movies, I just wish they'd come out faster.

Game Wave Family Entertainment System? Gizmondo? GP2X? EVO:Phase One? Hyper Scan? These consoles all came out during 2005-2007. And I'm not even talking about the REMAKE consoles. Crazy huh?

Great feature. I'm old enough to remember the Odyssey2...vaguely. Y'see, kids, back in the early 80s everyone had an Atari, some kids had an Intellivision and maybe, just maybe, you knew someone who had Odyssey2. It was kind of like the PS3 of its day.

Last May I posted scans from a buying guide printed in a 1982 issue of Games Magazine. It has a lot of info on the Odyssey2.

Those things are a pain to lug out of a basement. But Atari is a better system because you can still program games for it--the retro store I used to work in go blank carts in all the time, and we sold homebrew games in the store.

I also still have my father's Odyssey 2. I remember loving it when the golfer would get mad after missing so many shots (when I was a child I thought it was hilarious). Man that was a long time ago. I also remember that racing game and another spaceship game.

Nolan Bushnell never programed a video game in his life. His partner Ted Dabney programed Pong. Bushnell would tell Dabney exactly what he wanted and Dabney would go ahead and try his best, for example Bushnell told him to add the sound of a crowd cheering, but the technology of the day wouldn't allow it. Bushnell said, I want the paddles to deflect the dot in another direction, Dabney added that and so on. Poor Ted Dabney never gets any credit.
