I would have figured people would be happy with a homosexual Anders. He's human, with romantic drivings, morals, and passions. As opposed to Zevran in DAO who would sleep with anything.
Well, yeah, you pretty much nailed it - it seems the irony of the gay community is that for all the desire of being treated equal, some of them strangely want to be labeled and apply that label to everything as if "Gay" is some kind of special title.
I mean, sure, its nice Bioware has orientation options, but you still have to write a story and define characters, so not every character can be suited to personal taste. Narrative has its limits.

I... don't know if this is really news. I played a female rogue and Anders (male mage) got mad at me for spurning his advances. Rivalry +5 after the conversation. Should I be mad and complaining because of that?
The problem is, Anders is a clingy character. You've got to expect rivalry points when a conversation topic comes up with three responses - 2 with heart/flirt indicators and 1 with the angry response.

I doubt very much that the issue is that he's 'bad' gay character. It probably has more to do with why he is 'bad'. If Bioware decided to make him a terrible human being, but instead opted for character flaws that weren't already part of sex crazed gay male stereotype, I don't the gamer would have taken umbrage to the fact that a gay character was portrayed in a negative light.
Bioware has been fairly good about including interesting gay characters. Not to mention there are so many other ridiculous gay characters that are nothing more than walking stereotypes. I haven't played the new Dragon Age yet, but as a card-carrying homo, I have to say this sounds like a bunch of horseshit. C'mon boys, can't we find something more important to complain about.

I have a hard time trying to think of another developer that is less homophobic than BioWare... people just need to grow up.

When I saw the original topic I assumed people were just trying to cause trouble for David because both he and Mike Laidlaw are considered by some fans the guys responsible for the shift from Origins to DA2.

The Helghast are all British. I find that more annoying than anything related to gay characters. Christ I'd like to see what the people raising hell over this would think of Kanji's shadow in Persona 4.

I don't know anything about the character, so I can't really say I can agree with the sentiment or not. But I can say there are people in every community that want their group portrayed as Grade A quality and nothing less. There are people who want perfection or just straight up insecure. These people aren't just in the Gay Community. So don't make a comment that sounds like it is.

well said Jim. The thing is, you can politely decline Anders' advances and he sticks around, you can even become friends with him! I did this on my first playthrough even!

The character being referenced as a "bad gay" did the evil deed not because he was gay, or anything related to sexuality, but instead because the character is a mage. Maybe real life warlocks and witches should be getting offended here... maybe even Sheen!... Don't say his name too loud though, he hears everything.

You know what the bottom line here is? Out of every different pertinent societal group, there's a nice little handful of people who are not content unless they are constantly taking offense to something and by doing so forcing everyone to listen to their "plight" in a pathetic cry for attention and validation. One of my best friends is as straight as a pocket book full of rainbows, will be the first to out drink you and say "way to fail, fag." for it, and refused Anders when he played Dragon Age on the basis that he likes "bears". This isnt about homosexuality. It's about human pettiness.

Did anybody actually follow the bloody links in Jim's article? I think you'll find that a significant number of gay gamers seem to support Gaider. Hell a lot of them have actually made the effort to thank him.
In fact if you do a little detective work it's not difficult to see that the person who started that petition probably isn't even gay.

He's not explicitly bisexual. He could be, be he also might just be straight if Hawke is female and gay if Hawke is male. There isn't continuity between multiple playthroughs, so he doesn't have to necessarily be bisexual.

During my gameplay Anders ended up kissing my character and was really happy when he did it. However, although he seemed offended/sad when I said I didn't want to go beyond it and not move in with him, I didn't lose any friendship points with him (or maybe I did, but half an hour later it was still 100% friendly). You can't have everything in the game (or life).
First off, as a gay man, I have definitely met men who I 'lost friendship points with' because I didn't want to have sex and/or a relationship with them. Additionally, it's not just gay men who do this. Whoever started this petition doesn't have their head screwed on straight.
Seriously, I didn't have much interest in DAII (I wasn't much of a fan of the original), but I'm about getting ready to buy and play this just because I want to see what the hell is in this game that's getting people all riled up.

This is the same game with Fenris, the bisexual warrior who NEVER talks about sex.
Frankly, Dragon Age 2 is the absolutely most forward thinking game ever released when it comes to sexuality. Characters have sexualities. They are realistically portrayed portions of their characters. Do they want everyone to not talk about their sexuality? Do they want everyone to be as over the top sexually as Zevran? Are they mad because *gasp* Anders isn't really gay, he's bisexual? I don't understand. Do they think homosexuality is better portrayed in another game, because if it is I'd love to see it.

Jim you speak the truth! At my work we attended a talk by a disability awareness company which made it painfully clear that we should be aware that there are disabled people but that we should not treat them differently. Except when it comes to prices, they definitely wanted a discount for not being different.

I donīt know about that guy. But Zevran is the one who doesnīt know how to cope with rejection. When he tried to hit on me (I am a male elf) I respectfully refused and got -10 from him. Not too soon after I tried to talk to him and told him that he had a new home with me and could forget about the crows and I got a -5.
And the he tried (and failed, miserably) to kill me. And I remember that one of the things that I asked him before sparing his life after he tried to kill me the first time was "how do I know you wonīt try to kill me again?" and he said something like "I am a lot of things, but I am not disloyal". So that was loyal for him? No "bow chicka bow" with me and he wants to murder me and my allies?
I donīt know if that Anders guy can surpass that.

The west should not tackle gay characters in video games at all. Just leave that to the Japanese. Best portrayal I ever saw was in Enchanted Arms. Besides, isn't this getting a little ridiculous? Does EVERY BioWare game now need to have a prominent gay character now? What's next, a wheelchair bound warrior? A transvestite mage? Please leave political correctness out of my video games! Having to fight angry, scary patriots in Bioshock Infinite is bad enough.
