BioWare talks Dragon Age: Origins delay and PS3 chicanery photo

Last week, we discovered that Dragon Age: Origins was suffering a slight delay, being pushed back to November from October. According to developer BioWare, the delay has nothing to do with quality, and the game has been pushed back so the team can "finalize" things.

"We're just taking a little time to finalise things," says executive producer Mark Darrah. "We're focusing on making sure that we bring each SKU up to quality."

Darrah also touched upon why the PS3 version is releasing after the PC and Xbox 360, but his answer won't exactly satisfy curious PlayStation fans: "This is just the order we've chosen to [release] them in."

I played Dragon Age: Origins this past week, but embargoes prevent me from speaking about it. All I guess I can get away with saying is that I think BioWare's telling the truth when it says the delay isn't a quality issue. I am also really going to struggle with the long wait until November to play this game again.

Firstly, that's probably the biggest bullshit response I've heard in my entire life.

Secondly, I had no idea the PS3 version was being released later anyways, so this is a huge bonerkiller for me.

Save your money and buy Demon's Souls instead. You'd be happier.

Maybe they delayed it because of Uncharted 2?

Every developer that is used to make games for the PC usually ends up hating the PS3.
October to November is a eternity in internet time Jim.

Not that I care about the PS3 version, but I agree with Magesx. That's a load of fucking bullshit. It makes absolutely no fucking sense at all. Unless there is a PS3 exclusive that's releasing the same week, which there isn't as far as I know, then there is no reason the game can't come out the same day.

Oh well. I'll be getting it for the 360.

JACK of No Trades: Why would they delay a multi-platform tolkenian RPG because of a ps3 exclusive adventure game? ;)

PS3 can't efficiently render painfully generic fantasy worlds.

Its release date was within a week of Uncharted 2. Uncharted is a huge game and I think it would have affected Dragon Age's sales.

Ehh, Dragon Age and Uncharted are so unsimilar that I don't think they would've affected each other sales. I mean, adventure people are going to buy Uncharted, and probably not buy DA in the first place, and it'll be just the opposite with RPG people.

@ Djnx

Dragon Age: Origins is not "Tolkenian" at all. If you want to sound smart, try to not use terms like Tolkenian or "Kafkaesque." If you want to compare DA:O to any piece of modern fantasy literature, compare it to George R. R. Martin's series "A Song of Ice and Fire."

What's the deal with Demon's Souls? I haven't played it, but I love Bioware games and Dragon Age looks amazing. If Demon's Souls is sweet I'll check it out.

JACK: Yes, it was within one week of Uncharted and also Brutal Legend. Now, the 360 and PC version are in early November, but the PS3 version is coming "later that month". So I don't think Uncharted 2 is the cause. More likely it's their relationship with MS, or possibly just some fucking cash being handed over.

Microsoft loves to fuck with Sony.

No TES V and no KOTOR 3? I'm happy to wait for DA:O if it means that we get a great new IP to take the place of the ones we're losing to the MMO madness!

On a related note though, what the fuck do I know? Maybe they just suck at PS3 development, maybe they're just dickheads.

I never have a problem with a game being delayed for the PS3 but released on other platforms. It gives me a chance to hear feedback about the game and make a better decision as to whether it's worth buying. It also gives devs a chance to find out about problems and often the PS3 game is then released with a patch in place.

I wonder why the attach-rates are so low on ps3:s... Could these delays of the ps3-versions of games be a reason? Not that I really care about in this case, because I was thinking of buying it for the PC.

It's incredibly unusual that the PS3 version is being delayed instead of the PC version, since normally there're fears that piracy on PC will "cannibalise" sales. It's a weird decision but a delay of a few weeks isn't too big a deal given how much else will be coming out.

Since this is Bioware's spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate series I'm guessing PC will be the sku most hard core old school fans pick up.

In other news, the PS3 and its cell processor are still very difficult to develop for, especially compared to the 360's PowerPC and PC's AMD64 architectures.
