Rumors of Mass Effect 2 on PS3 continue to persist. This time the rumor fires are being fanned by a lone comment, a possible slip of the tongue, made by BioWare’s Jay Watamaniuk during a presentation at Poznan Game Arena.
According to Polish gaming Web site Polygamia, Watamaniuk presented two games during the event, one of those being Mass Effect 2. In that section of his presentation, Watamaniuk said the sci-fi RPG was set to hit three platforms: the Xbox 360, PC, “and probably PS3.” Polygamia writes that the man realized his mistake and shortly began backpedaling, saying that the studio doesn’t comment on rumors and speculation. In other words, they don’t comment on stories like this.
Or like these.
Just last week, EA shot down Mass Effect 2 PS3 listings on an official Russian EA Web site, saying that they were made in “error.” Retailers outside of North America, on the other hand, have been listing the title as PS3-bound despite no outward indications from EA that the title is hitting the Sony’s black platform.
In North American, currently through Amazon, pre-orderers of the PS3-bound Collector’s Edition of BioWare’s other upcoming RPG, Dragon Age: Origins, can net themselves a cloth map, a tin box, and “an unlockable item for Mass Effect 2.” We're still unsure if this is an accidental listing ripped from the contents description of the Xbox 360 version of the special edition package. In fact, we're unsure of a lot of things relating to this ME2-to-PS3 business -- all we have are a series of little and quite possible mistakes.
[Update: Consider this latest Mass Effect 2-on-the-PS3 thing, and any subsequent stories on the subject toast. In a recent official message board post, Watamaniuk made it very clear that ME2 is only coming to two consoles: the PC and the Xbox 360. "There is a report circulating today based on an appearance I made in Poland yesterday," he said in the post. "Seems there was a misunderstanding about ME2 coming to PS3."
"Let me clarify today: ME2 is coming to PC and X360 only. Look for them both on Jan 26 in NA and Jan 29 in Europe."
That's what we've needed to hear for a while.]
I like me some WRPGs
I don't get why it is that Amurkins love the 360 so? Weird.
I hope they bring both games over to the PS3. Mass Effect is one of my all times favorites. It would be great if people who only own a PS3 could play it as well.
Actually, that's like all exclusives recently. With the exception of things published by the companies themselves and maybe a few select others (Epic, Naughty Dog, Insomniac, Valve), most stuff seems to be hitting both consoles. I like it, actually, because it makes owning one console or another not as big a deal. Of course, you'll stil have fanboys up in arms or taunting members of another system when they lose an exclusive.
Hmmm tee tummm final fantasy 13....grand theft auto 4...devil may cry 4...hmmm.
(Seriously, I think it would be a good move to put it [and a re-release of the first one] on the PS3. It's really one of the best games I've ever played).
Why is it sad to see exclusives fade away? I'm a fan of video games, not the machines that play them. I'm always happy when something goes multi-platform because then more people get to play it.
I'd rather not play pawn in some hardware manufacturer's scheme to sell consoles.
So PS3 owners, I hope you get to enjoy Mass Effect, and I hope to see more former PS3 exclusives on 360. Maybe then we can stop unjustly trashing games that aren't on our console of preference, or overinflating the review scores of system exclusives.
I can sort of see where you're coming from on two levels:
1.) Consoles used to have much more of an individual identity. Back in the day you were an SNES or Genesis guy, an N64 or PSOne guy. That's gone to a large degree. I worked at a KB Toys when I was in high school. This was the end of the N64/PSOne era through the PS2 launch. Back then, it was a lot easier to tell parents which system to buy based on their kids' interests and preferences.
2.) You're basically saying you want to keep game exclusive, thus denying single-system people of some great games, in order to justify your multiple console purchase. That seems... selfish.
Either way, I think there are still enough solid exclusives on every console this gen to still justify a purchase. But maybe keep this trend in mind before buying the next round of consoles down the road.
"But maybe keep this trend in mind before buying the next round of consoles down the road." Yeah, I'll keep it in mind for sure.
The whole continuing story/decisions from ME1 isn't really a valid argument since there will be plenty of people playing ME2 as their first entry into the series.
I've got a friend who swears by ME and sometimes it seems like he's praying for a PS3 port of it so I can play too...but after KOTOR, I'm not particularly thrilled about a possible ME port to PS3.
Seriously...RPGs were meant to be played with paper, pencil, multi sided dice and Trapper Keepers stood on end.
To Bioware: Please don't.
Personally, I'd prefer if they did a two-pack that contains both ME1 and ME2, even if it comes out a few months later. I've never played the first ME, so while I'd rather have just ME2 than nothing at all, I'd prefer to be able to start at the beginning.
Still on the fence whether to buy the first one or not, but I'm in no need of more games atm. That will probably change someday though.
if anyone picks up MAG instead of ME2, they have issues needing phyciatric attention
