BioWare: Motion controls attempt to do fantastic things photo

With Microsoft and Sony following Nintendo into the motion control era, the subject of waggle is a hot topic. While checking out Dragon Age: Origins at BioWare headquarters, I took the opportunity to ask lead designer Mike Laidlaw what he thought of motion controls, and their potential effect on the industry.

"Motion controls are really attempting to do two things, both of which are fantastic," he explained. "First, you have a movement towards pulling the player off the couch. To making them move and use more than just their fingers to steer the game. Not only does this combat the stigma of video games as being only for couch potatoes, but it opens up new avenues of gaming that simply weren’t there before.

"Exercise games were around before, but they only felt like an ancillary product or interactive guide until Wii Fit suddenly started judging us, and encouraging us to get better using real data, or Dance Dance Revolution tasked us with actually moving our feet quickly and in patterns.

"Second, you have an attempt at immersion. The players motions are translated directly onto the screen, and that pulls you in. Does it work in all cases? Nope, but we’re just at the beginning of translating motion into on-screen action. The new announcements like Natal seem to be pushing things further in that direction, and it’s exciting to see where we’ll be in a few years. Bioware, of course, is always looking at new technology to see how it can be used in our games, and anything that increases immersion is exciting for us, as we see investment in your character as one of the key strengths of our games. "

Could we be seeing Project Natal interaction in the next Mass Effect? Who knows? I certainly hope so though -- Imagine standing around waiting inside elevators ... with MOTION CONTROL! It'd feel like you were really in that elevator!

You seem rather cynical about this Natal thing, Jim. :P

I'll just point out that people wrote off 3d Platform games until Super Mario 64 came out and showed what could be done with them, and started a revolution. Now, if all Natal brings is a huge collection of cheap mini games, then that would be depressing. But it'd be nice if we got something revolutionary.

I can just imagine the field day the press is going to have when and if Natal actually comes out. Think of FPS on Natal..."Murder simulator" the press will say.

Motion Control was revolutionary a few years back, this can only be evolutionary or rather an evolution on the concept of motion control.

I already got burned with the Wii. I dunno if I can take much more heartache.

The excercise goal is a noble one, as long as they keep it to excercise games. I don't want them throwing it in to random games to "get gamers off the couch."

The immersion factor, well... I will believe it when I see it. The time I have spent with the Wii did the exact opposite, so Natal has a lot to prove IMO.

He made some good points. I don't really know what to think about Natal and stuff yet but I'm keeping my mind open to it at the time.

Note the word attempt. As in motion controls are trying to rabblerabble~ but failing miserably but hey at least they're trying!

If Microsoft believed Natal would truly break the barrier to entry that they think controllers create, they'd leave the 360's dual-analog out of the inevitable Natal bundle. Who thinks they'll do that?

I like the idea of full-body motion tracking but there has to be a physical controller of some kind. It can even be as non-tactile as a touchscreen—which is clear by the success of the DS and iPhone—but there has to be something. The only way Halo, for instance, could be played with Natal alone is by shouting voice commands at the built-in mic (and the only method of aiming, whether it be a gun or a paint brush, is by pointing your finger).

An RTS like EndWar might work but then, EndWar only required a mic.

Ehhhhhhhhhhh, excercise games are overrated. The Wii gathering dust jokes aren't really jokes. As long as it doesn't turn all shooter games into light gun shooters it'll be fine. You already have the Wii for that.

I find the word immersion odd. Do people who buy Wii fit really show any interest in immersion whatsoever? I don't think they do...

No but when I rip shields of space pirates in Metroid Prime 3 it helps me feel immersed :)
