BioWare mining data from Mass Effect 2 photo

If you've been playing Mass Effect 2 while connected to the Internet, then beware, for you are being watched. BioWare has revealed that its sci-fi RPG sequel was loaded with little events that allowed it to mine data from players, working out how they played the game in order to make Mass Effect 3 a better game.

"More people played the soldier class than all of the other classes combined," says executive producer Casey Hudson. "If you know that, then you can start thinking about future games. Is that good? Is that a problem? Should we look at the other classes and start thinking about ways to make them selected as often as soldier? As part of asking these questions, we can design games in the future a lot better."

Other information includes the fact that fewer than 15% of gamers skipped conversations, that over half of players loaded a save from the original Mass Effect, and that PC players did fewer loyalty missions than 360 ones.

With Rockstar having done the same thing with Red Dead Redemption, it's a little creepy to think that developers are spying on your actions. It's anonymous, but still, very weird. Next time you're trying to shag Morrigan in Dragon Age, just remember ... they're looking at you.

Ha! I was a default Male and Female Shepard. I couldn't be bothered to make a custom character. Especially since I'm so used to default Male Shep. Any other design is fucking weird to me.

Male = Soldier
Female = Infiltrator

I often think about many games that should spit this kinda funny info out there. They need to do this more.

Honestly, this how games should me done.

Kinda off topic....
But when you look at the iPhone and Apple, a person is always constantly asked for location services. It's up to the user to agree and end up with a better experience with the product.

I for one agree with BioWare mining for Data.

I've been thinking about it, and I believe I actually have some ethical problems with this idea. If the game is a means for people to experience their own individual versions of a story, and the choices that you make are being watched, that's...sort of like a personality test, isn't it? One that nobody agreed to participate in when they decided to play the game. I know they don't really intend to do much with this data, but still...it feels like a bit of a violation.

I just want to make sure I know when Activision is mining for data, I know that wouldn't be good.

More people played the soldier class... because they didn't realize the Infiltrator class gives you invisibility, devastating headshots, and near infinite bullet time.

Could be worse didn't blizzard get caught with its hands in the cookie jar with some registry scanner or what not some years back. Arguably tho pretty much any game you play online that bothers with stats is tracking your data and that can easily be accessed by the developer or gaming portal.

So Yeah its a bit disconcerting but at least its generally benign.

They should concentrate on QA rather than post release feedback. I'm getting a bit tired of all these glitches Dragon age and Mass effect manage to get.

Sounds like 360 gamers are just more mature.

80% of players do not understand that it is all about femShep Infiltrator. Jennifer Hale delivers those Renegade lines like a badass. ^_^

But honestly, this type of data tracking is a good thing. Any game that has badges or leaderboards or any kind of online component is already using your gameplay data. You might as well have someone on the other end analyze that data and put it to good use in improving the content for the sequel.

In Mass Effect 1 I made the unfortunate choice of choosing the boring class known as the Soldier, thankfully Mass Effect 2 gave me the option to change classes when tranfering my character, I changed it to Engineer.

It makes me wonder why so many people wanted the same old from this game when they had so many other options.

Ugh, soldier = boring, IMO, I'd rather play as any other class. I just thing ammo powers are not interesting...I played as vanguard and am getting ready to do a infiltrator and a sentinel, one male, 2 female, no default. I guess I'm the exception. I wonder how the romances and loyalty missions rank...

It's not the acheivments; I deliberatley didn't do the Tali mission because she is the one character that irritates the shit out of me. The accent and everything.

Was quite happy to see her get steamed to death.

Anyway, if they really want to make Mass Effect 3 better, they'd hurry up and get it out; ME2 was excellent, the build up to the suicide mission was tense and I actually gave a shit whether the characters died or not. Oh yeah, and Mordin as squad mate.

Me as a Vanguard, Garrus and Legion. My favorite team. I once also heard that the more you take certain squadmates out on missions with you, then that will have an effect on those two particular squadmates you ended up favouring for the 3rd game.

I still regret completing Insanity with a Vanguard, made the game a little more diffcult than I had to be, but still was one of the toughest and most tedious things I have ever done.

Why pick Soldier? Because the benefits of it are very obviously summarised on the class description. If the class choice screen told you what kind of abilities your class would have in future, it might be different, but I picked Soldier because of two words: Assault Rifle. A rapid-fire rapid-response weapon that works well at any range? Yes please. Good as the weapons are in ME2, I don't think the others really hold up to that, especially coming to the game from ME1. I dislike the shotguns - they seem to kill things far less quickly than my assault rifle did, only really working on stuff that's right in your face - and while I love sniping in general, it doesn't seem like a practical way to wage high-octane warfare, especially with ammo being limited to 10-15 shots for a fully loaded rifle.

To be fair, now that I've played ME2 and know what sort of things happen, e.g. the much quicker cooldowns allowing repeated use of relied-upon powers, surprising new potency of pistols (Carnifex Hand Cannon ftw) and so on, I'd change my mind. Picking Soldier for your first run is a sensible idea though.

Never thought about it before, but yeah, that makes sense...

Also, there's an option to turn this feature off. I remember noticing it when I first bought the game. Left mine on, like a boss. :)

Once again. Nobody asked for the permission to do this. Remember when people used to harass you on the phone, ask you to do a market survey and sometimes send you enough for a pack of cigarettes for your trouble? Well great, now they do it behind your back, that's another job that isn't available to anybody, nobody gets paid for it, and corporations answer to nobody while making record profits for their shareholders. There is even a growing number of people out there that will defend this kind of behavior, since they've grown up with it being like this. You really think this is all about making a more orc slaying, alien fucking, immersive experience happen for gamers? I gots my doubts.

@Ebola8MyFace

In general, it is good to maintain a healthy paranoia about corporations, not because they're evil, but because they're out to profit and may do it against your best interests. In this case, however - software engineers at gaming studios generally aren't behind some master plan to dominate you by calculating how many times you headbutted a Krogan in Mass Effect. I think this specific instance is pretty harmless. Also, you want to remember that if you have a LIVE profile or PSN account or a Bioware profile or any of those things, you have already given people far more information than Mass Effect is capable of tracking, and in a way that's very easy to trace.

Now, things that go after your system registry and actually plant data miners are a whole other thing. I also dislike the notion that publishers might begin using these systems in more and more games, for more invasive things like targeted advertising. So I'm aware we're on a slippery slope here! Just sayin', this one doesn't seem worth worrying about.

Took a quick cell phone pic, just to end the "they never asked" misconception.

The part that's hidden by the glare, where the option itself is highlighted, is marked "upload player data".

So, yeah...if you're worried about Bioware trying to replicate your brainwaves or something, you can just click the little "no" box. Problem solved, rite?

I had FemShep since the first game, imported into the 2nd and played both games to death, sometimes I see little pics or movies of ME that focus on MaleShep and I don't realise what it is right away as my customised FemShep is such a part of the game to me the MaleShep looks wrong.

Also, she looks like the character I've made in other games as well, so there is a kind of linage there...

Now, I don't doubt that there were only good intentions when they did this, but at the same time, it really should've been an option to participate or not. I don't particularly mind in this case, but doing it without giving the choice not to include yourself or AT LEAST saying that they're doing it beforehand, just sets a bad precedent that has way too much potential to get out of hand.

That's all I'm trying to say DirtyHobo. In the meantime, I'll make sure that when I go to the options screen to invert my controls, I also check for the "Can we market research..er...enhance your playing experience by spying on you?" option and click NO. It's just disingenuous to not be forthcoming about any act that compromises your privacy, even for a video game. These people can read forums online or hire people, they don't need direct access to what we're doing in our homes. Fanboys can rage on about how paranoid I am, but the truth is, better safe than sorry.

This is hardly news since one of the choices in the Options menu was whether to participate in this scheme or not. Then again, that fact seems to have been lost on many of the users commenting here, so maybe the contents of a game's Option menu does now indeed constitute news.

Well to be fair, it is interesting to hear what BioWare found out from it.

Meer is monotonous and boring. Hale actually inflects and has a very different style of speaking for both paragon/renegade. Meer sounds the roughly the same for both. He's boring, generic, and there are much better male voice actors in the business.

I am generally never female in a game if I can help it. When Mass Effect 2 came around, I played Fem Sheperd first to hear and enjoy Hale, because she's a better Renegade than Meer.

She's fucking brilliant. She pulls off being a badass more than a guy. That's hard to do. Maybe you dislike her voice, but calling Jennifer Hale a bad voice actor is totally bullshit. You've got shit in your ears, son.
