BioWare loves Jade Empire, would like to make more photo

Jade Empire was considered one of the few Xbox exclusives worth having the system for, but a sequel has never arrived for the martial arts action RPG. Despite the one-shot deal, BioWare has stated that it would love to revisit Jade Empire and make another one some day.

"We will certainly announce it if it’s going to be coming out," says BioWare's Mark Laidlaw, pulling a Captain Obvious. "At this point, Jade Empire is a staff favorite and a lot of us love it, so we’d love to revisit it at some point. But right now, we are very focused on Dragon Age and Mass Effect 2."

It'd be very interesting to see a new Jade Empire and I'm surprised it's not been done yet. Still, one can imagine that Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age: Origins take up a lot of manpower, and right now I'm too excited about the latter to think about any other RPGs from BioWare.

What about you? Would you like another Jade Empire?

I guess it goes without saying that they would do a lot of work on the sequel to Jade Empire but they definitely would need to make sure the combat is way more engaging than in the first game. I had a ton of fun with the game as a whole but sometimes it was just a boring one button mashfest. Otherwise I would be excited to see what they do with this game.

Yeah, if the combat system was improved I'd love to see a sequel. Also they need to leave out the god-awful shmup sections this time... I know they were optional but they made the entire game worse by their inclusion.

I still need to play the first one, but yeah, definitely.

I seem to remember a lot of little press release bits and financial stuff over the past year going on about how they're working on ME2, DA:O, and another unannounced RPG. Every time it gets brought up people start talking about how it has to be Jade Empire 2, and if they're talking about it themselves that only makes it seem even more likely.

Sounds like great news to me.

I've never played it, but I do know that the physical copy of the Xbox version sucks on the 360, forcing you to redownload it for another $15. Maybe they should fix that first, before making a new one.

To me, Jade Empire has always felt like the black sheep of BioWare. I never hated it, but I never really loved it either. I'm not sure why, but most likely it had something to do with me playing it so soon after KOTOR. I think a reappraisal might be in order over the holidays. I'd go for a sequel solely just based on the Eastern fantasy setting.

I played Jade Empire on the PC and I love it--just not enough to buy a 360 for the sequel.

I would like a Jade Empire with better combat. I now know I should not have been expecting a true action game, but I still feel it really missed its potential with a few simple and easy to fix mistakes. Focus, for example, should have regenerated fairly quickly, thus limiting your cool weapon styles to quick bursts, but not limiting them to what, 30 seconds every 5-10 min until you can find a recharge thing? Annoyed me no end, especially since it made no sense (your 'focus' obviously should recharge if you stop using it, like in real life).

If they fixed that, and made switching between styles on the fly natural and effective (which would be AWESOME, given how many cool fighting styles the game had) then I would love another Jade Empire. It was a beautiful and interesting game besides what I felt were flaws, and deserves another visit.

I would fucking LOVE a new Jade Empire! Its one of my favorite games of all time. The universe, characters, music... all of it was so awesome! Thank God they still have interest in this game!

Jade Empire was rad [I]for its time[/]. Given the experiences that BioWare have earned in the relentless pursuit of crafting Mass Effect, revisiting Jade Empire would be an incredible backtrack journey, stuffed with all of the things they as a company have learned in the interim.

Less verbose comment: man, that's a great fuckin' idea.

Yeah, Jade Empire 2 would be great. Maybe they should get to work on it when they're done with Mass Effect 2.

"Bioware makes a good game once every ten years" - Jim Sterling
Was this one of them?

I have the Limited Edition version and I can't really get past the first skirmish of guys. I really haven't tried to, but I'm still really not into Jade Empire.

Although it could be a good seller in the Asian marketplace, where Microsoft is in need of a shot in the arm after ToV went multiplatform.

I didn't really care for it. The story was just interesting enough to get me through to the end of the game, but the combat system just didn't really do much to pull me in. I pretty much stuck with my favorite style all the way through, occasionally swapping out for the blunderbuss when I wanted to feel sexy for holding a blunderbuss.

Also, the world map with two locations on it really made me giggle.

I loved Jade Empire...
Combat was meh... until I actually realized that its kind of like a wierd fighting game.
Combat was a bit unbalanced... often favoring either overpowered weapons, or transformations.

However, it had the best damn story in any, ANY videogame I've ever played.

I need Jade Empire 2...
It's like a movie... except it's story is about 20X better than the best movie's script.

They did a great job in Jade Empire creating their first original setting. But the game was way too linear for a Bioware game and the combat was lacking. It's the worst Bioware game, but still good. I'd be interested in a sequel. Hell, I be interested in anything Bioware until they burn me the first time. They're right up there with Blizzard and Valve.

JE was dece, but most of the side characters were useless, IMO.

I did enjoy trying to sacrifice one of them, though..

ME2 and Dragon Age take a lot of manpower? I bet SW:TOR takes even more. They've got a lot on their plate already.. and hell, ME 3 is confirmed as happening, too. So, it's going to be a very long time from now.

Jade Empire 2 would be awesome, but I don't mind waiting for it. It will happen eventually. Bioware is going to want to keep making money and they have an IP just sitting around collecting dust. When it does come I hope it's one of those games that come out near the end of a consoles life that pushes the hardware further than it ever has before.

Point of order: It's *Mike* Laidlaw that works for Bioware. Marc (with a c) Laidlaw is the head writer at Valve.

I've made the mistake before, myself.

I was curious how the world felt about Jade Empire. Personally, I really loved it. Granted, the combat had major issues. But the love Bioware put into the world and characters, as is their m.o., really pulled me in. Mass Effect has shown how their combat management has improved tremendously. I would love to see how they would handle martial arts now. I'm really hopeful for this.

By far their worst title, in my opinion, but still a decent game. It probably doesn't help the PC version came out like 2 years after the original.

While I'd love to see a sequel, Bioware seems to have a pretty full plate at the moment. Dragon Age seems to have tons of DLC / Expansion / Sequel potential (remains to be seen if they actually put OUT any DLC after their epic fail with ME in that area). They have the ME trilogy to finish (and HOPEFULLY actually put out some more DLC than they did with the first game) not to mention the HUGE resources that will be required to put out, maintain and try to keep players interested in the KotOR MMO.

I just don't see a huge Jade Empire project being possible while all that IP is still be worked on.

A sequel would be good but i can wait until after Dragon Age and ME2, although if it's after SWTOR I don't know how much other games I'll be playing!

Hell yes. In fact, I'd like to see BioWare take a stab at a few other mythological versions of real, historical cultures. How about a northern Africa/Egyptian based version of Jade Empire? Or a viking/northern Europe one? The premise of a mythological version of history with an RPG worked in is a rich one.

I had the CE Edition of this pre-ordered many many months before hand and agonized over every single day until it came out, then spent all my available time playing it and making a mess in my pants. It might possibly be one of my favorite titles ever. So yes, I would be interested in a follow up :P
