BioWare: Eh, we could make Mass Effect for PS3 if we WANTED to

BioWare: Eh, we could make Mass Effect for PS3 if we WANTED to photo
My exclusives, let me show you them

What is it about popular exclusive titles and rumors that they'll soon be appearing on other systems? Besides the usual "BioShock on PS3" chatter and the "MGS on Xbox 360" warbling, now Mass Effect is the latest in line to be lashed by wagging tongues thanks to analyst Michael Pachter.

BioWare has quickly nipped the Mass Effect/PlayStation 3 talk in the bud by denying that there are any current plans to convert the 360 exclusive RPG. The company did, however, state that it could do such a thing one day if it ever felt inclined. The quote is also gold as it slights Pachter, who I never listen to because analysts are just circus fortune tellers with briefcases instead of crystal balls. A BioWare community coordinator had this to say:

Sorry folks, this is just another rumor at this stage. Could BioWare make Mass Effect for the PS3 (or the PC, or some other platform) in the future? Yes we could, but we are not working on a PS3 version currently.

I don't know who Mr Pachter is. Maybe he's a PS3 owner who wants to play Mass Effect.

So, while Mass Effect currently remains a 360 exclusive, the door is certainly open in the future for PS3 owners to have disappointing softcore sex with blue aliens that wouldn't even offend my grandmother. Look forward to this subject cropping up approximately every two months from now on.

[Thanks, Wadrox. Don't read Wardrox's blog]

Of course you won't see the fanboys making a big spectacle about this, because they don't care. MGS4 on the other hand...

The way I see it: The more people that get to play this game the better. I'm 30 hours into it and I have loved those hours. This game is just amazing. Though the texture pop-ins annoy the fuck out of me and i'm not quite sure why BioWare let that even happen.

It's called outsourcing. EA didn't pay all that money just to have such a big franchise be anyone's exclusive. MS publishing ME is the only sticky part, but ME2 and 3 WILL be multiplatform. Unless EA hates money all of a sudden.

Honestly, they can have it. I found it to be an average RPG at best. Sure, the initial impression of its graphical prowess and seemly expansive universe is overwhelming. However, once you get to the driving portion it becomes immediately less fun to play. The combat system, imho, could use some work too. I'd really like for them to make KOTOR3. I appreciated the RPG with some action elements much more than the FPS with RPG elements. The one place I will not quarrel with it is its story. I do like what they've done there. Either way, going to PS3 is no big deal. They could really use some lovin'.

Wedge's Avatar
Wedge at 01/05/2008 23:39
They're restricted by license agreements at the moment. I'm sure we'll see ports elsewhere once those are up, even if it's in a couple years. They bothered to release Jade Empire on PC two years after it came out on X-Box, so don't think they won't.

No one lost an exclusive. Mass Effect is available for the Xbox 360. If you want to play it NOW, you're going to have to buy one. If you can wait, it'll hit other consoles and platforms in time. The big games always do. I mean, how many ways can you get your mega man on?

The reporting in general on Michael Pachter seems a little unfair; he makes predictions because the press (people like Gametrailers), ask him for his opinion, and he's making those predictions based on what makes economic sense for these companies.

It makes economic sense for EA to make the Mass Effect series a multi-platform franchise. That's a stance that is supported by the numbers: how much EA paid for Bioware/Pandemic, the $300 million revenue figure that EA predicts they'll make off up and coming Bioware/Pandemic titles, and the increased sales you get from releasing games on multi-platform.

For Michael Pachter to predict this isn't a wild claim, it seems to me to be a fairly logical conclusion. The real question is if it's not coming to PS3 then why would EA not port it? Where is the financial sense in that?

Also, go watch the original Bonud Round episode where he says this as in context it's not nearly as bold a proclamaition as the press reported it.

The point is that you and I and internet trolls can do all the baseless speculation we want; an analyist is at least expected to be able to substatiate their claims based on something other than precedent set by other companies and games in similar situations.

If they fix the loading and pop-ups and the control scheme from crapping out and the nav menu from being such a flop, I'd get it for the PS3 over the 360...
Holiday's Avatar

Of course they could do it, and it wouldn't suffer the same problems it did on the Xbox 360. Cause Microsoft screwed them over with unrealistic demands. That's why side missions suck and I gotta wait 30 seconds for screen textures to load.

Erm, bioware are a second party microsoft developer, and the game was developed with microsoft game studios. A windows release in a year or two is likely, but don't hold your breath for a PS3 version. It's a MS property, it won't appear on PS3 unless MS say so.
