BioWare boss calls The Old Republic's combat 'choreographed' photo

One thing that was missing from The Old Republic’s official unveiling was how the game was actually going to work in regards to its combat. In a conversation with VG247, BioWare exec Greg Zeschuk explained that the combat would be “choreographed” instead of that nasty the typical MMO staple of “swinging through each other” with weapons.

From the interview:

Star Wars is choreographed, it’s elegant; it’s big, powerful moves and lightning bolts flashing, but in a way that makes sense visually and aesthetically. One of the goals we have [is] to create this choreographed type of combat that looks as though it could be taking place in a Star Wars movie.
I’m welcome to any massive confrontations on the scale of the Jedi and Sith battles in the movies, but I’m having a hard time drinking the BioWare Kool-Aid on this one. I can’t imagine that combat is going to be any different than the majority of MMOs. I’m expecting a few loose animations on par with Knights of the Old Republic.

What do you guys think? Do you expect anything revolutionary?

I expect it to look just like KOTOR with the animations playing out and the numbers floating overhead. No doubt it will look cool and be an improvement on empty swings.

Well I expect it to be a StarWars game.

What?

I'm not expecting a revolution, but I'm hoping for a cool game. I do wonder if combat will be slower since you'll be waiting for all these elegant little flurishes every time you swing your light saber.

I'd be very happy if they can pull it off, that was always one of the things that bugged me about KOTOR.

If they can make a gameplay video like that one game that NCSoft (I believe it's called Blade & Soul) I'll believe in Harvey De- I mean Bioware.

I remember in an early interview with the developer of Lord of the Rings Online that they mentioned utilizing a stamina meter instead of a health meter. Basically, during combat, your character wouldn't actually get hit. Instead, he would be parrying and countering, just like in the movies. Only when his stamina bar depletes does he actually take a hit and receive damage.

Obviously that little feature didn't make the cut, but I can imagine Bioware adopting something similar.

It does bother me that people generally just whack each other with deadly weapons over and over again in MMOs.

I bet 3,000 quadrogaggaaaabijilionzillion that it doesn't make it to the full game. This was in Matrix and Heroes & Gods. Ya they didn't make it very far. It's a feature that can't be implemented in MMOs and there is a very very clear reason why. The amount of players in MMO is to high to have precisely time events like these. No one is where they actually appear at any given time the server only syncs up every so often making sure your in your correct location. If they did this that would make people teleport in order to engage with the other. Not to mention this automatically means the game is locked down between two characters. Making it less of an MMO in my opinion.

Not only this but the only alternative is to make the game HIGHLY instanced with dedicated server power to each instance making it more like an FPS aka low numbered 4 vs X mobs type situation.

In which cast again it's HIGHLY instanced and will resemble more of a SINGLE player game.

It's either these two of the "EXEC" is full of bullshit and doesn't know what he's talking about.

The best lightsaber combat I've seen so far was in the Jedi Knight games on the PC. It was fairly haphazard but if you put some effort into a fight it would end up looking rather cool. Still I guess you couldn't do that in an MMO. PvP would turn into who can press a button first.

It's going to be nothing but canned animations to try to make the combat look better, when there's nothing actually going on but boring click-kill MMO gameplay. Big woop. Wake me when someone actually tries to innovate with the genre again.

Bullshit. It'll be just the same as every other MMO and probably be yet another WoW clone with a different setting.

I find it amazing that gamers will be slapped down over and over again with lacklustre MMO versions of their favourite IP but they'll bounce back every time like a panting dog, full of enthusiasm and ready for the next disappointment.
