BioWare aims to make people emotional with upcoming games photo

Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age: Origins might make players cry -- or experience exhilaration, get wicked pissed, or feel like a nerd. Described as the “goal” in an interview with VideoGamer.com, Ray Muzyka said BioWare aims to make players feel emotions while playing both of their upcoming releases.

“I think that’s the goal, to try and make people feel the same emotions they feel in real life,” said Muzyka after saying he thought the two titles might force people to shed a tear or two.

Muzyka continued. He said that even the slightest stuff -- bad eye design, for example (we’re looking at you Mass Effect) -- could steal credibility from the title and thus kill any sort of emotional connection. He said the studio has to do things “just right,” to get that emotional response.

"If you don't have all those things just right,” he said, “you can't break through that barrier to get the genuine emotional engagement with characters. That's where you get some of the more difficult emotions to convey, of love, sadness, regret, fondness, hatred, dislike, these are all valid expressions and emotions we strive for, and they're hard to do.”

So, wait, Dragon Age -- the “new s--t” -- Origins could make us cry AND play around with prostitutes AND it comes with a cloth map (that for some reason I haven't seen yet)? Sign me up for three -- nay, four copies.

I think that Bioware already does a good job re-creating emotion in their video games, especially in contrast with other game designers. When I played through Mass Effect, even though there were issues, I definitely felt the emotional side of commanding a team of members who I liked and conversely didn't like, and at the end of the game with the conclusion I felt the weight of my decisions weighing down on me. Ultimately, I think this is what deeper and higher end gaming is trying to accomplish because emotion is usually what has legitimized mediums as "art forms". Entertainment isn't enough. So its nice that Bioware is really trying to emphasize that even moreso than they have in the past in upcoming games.

they just did the video ad to get the game out there so people large amounts of people (not just hardcore gamers or even just hardcore RPG/DnD players) will buy it.
By the way, this is the exact reason I love games, especially Bioware ones. GEEKGAAAASM!

Dragon Age will be FAR FAR FAR FAR from the first game to make me feel "wicked pissed". I've been feeling that way since I first started playing my NES way back in the day. Why, I felt that way yesterday as Napoleon bore down on me with a horde of knights yesterday in Civ 4. Wicked pissed, been there done that.

A.) I think you missed the point completely, pretty much.
B.) Did anybody say Dragon Age would be the first game to ever make you pissed? I think you added that in there yourself.

Game looks great. Already have it preordered which is something I never do.

Is boredom one of the emotions they were trying to convey?

Wouldn't be the 1st Bioware game to make me shed a tear but then again I **REALLY** trusted Yoshimo... too soon? ;)

@runtheplacered:
A) It was a joke. Obviously not a very good one because a good joke never needs to be explained.
B) Very first sentence: "Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age: Origins might make players cry -- or experience exhilaration, get wicked pissed..."

@countingdown7: Haha, nice.

The more they reveal about Dragon Age, the worse it's looking to me.

If they had simply put up an ad saying "Bioware fantasy RPG releasing X/XX/XXXX" they'd have my money. But the vids and info they're releasing is just making it look bad, and worse.

I still hold out hope, though.
