BioShocker: Ken Levine not involved with BioShock 2 photo

I thought this was already known, but apparently the fact that Ken Levine isn't working on BioShock 2 has become "news" again, so let's talk about that.

BioShock creator Ken Levine has confirmed, for those at the back of the class, that he is not working on the sequel to the game he created. 2K Boston has other plans while 2K Marin has the unenviable task of following up 2007's underwater child-murdering sim.

"Right now I am focused on making our next big project at 2K Boston," Levine reaffirms with Game Informer. "While I'm not involved in BioShock 2, I'm really excited to see what the talented team at 2K Marin, some of whom worked on the original BioShock, comes up with. I can't wait to play it."

The extent of Levine's involvement with BioShock 2 is little more than informal voluntary conversations with the game's creative director, Jordan Thomas. 2K Marin also has a lot of people who worked on the original game, so hope is not lost that the sequel will live up to the original.

I've personally given up having any thoughts on the game. It'll either rock, or it'll suck. Not worrying about it makes the wait so much easier.

A bit of a shame, but still looking forward to playing it at the end of the year.

Thank you.

At least someone else thinks that not giving a shit about it until it comes out makes the wait less aggravating. But personally, no matter how the great the game could be, I doubt it'll reach the original in terms of quality. It may have a good storyline and may be an overall great addition to the franchise, but it won't catch the original in my opinion.

Bill Clinton isn't president anymore.

Yeah, this is ancient news.

This has always been my worry about BioShock 2. Apparently Levine was/is a total cunt to work with and the Bioshock team wanted nothing to do with him. Which is fine and understandable, but sometimes you need a total cunt to get things done.

Levine also apparently did not want multiple endings and was aware that the final third of the game pretty much sucked balls but those at odds with him (i.e. those people who are now developing BioShock 2) got their way. This of course is all based on stuff I've read in forums so it is very likely all lies.

What i do know for fact is that this must be a slow news day because he has been off the project for at least a year.

I'm with you on that one as well. I'm just not going to think about this game until I see some gameplay videos or something. I don't want this to suck-- it would crush me.

It would maybe explain why the new story ideas being leaked are so dire.

Yeah, this has been known for like...at least since last PAX.

We'll see how the second one is. I really do hope it will be good, because Bioshock was hands down one of the best video games I have ever played in terms of creating an intriguing and believable alternate world. I hate how people now are saying "In retrospect, Bioshock wasn't really that good." Fuck those people. The game was so compelling to me that I played it three times in a row because Rapture, by far, was the most fascinating game world I have ever seen.

The end :)

I've met the lead designer and creative director of Bioshock II. They were both critical team members on Bioshock. Yes Ken Levine was the creative director, or as I prefer to say "the man" but he didn't create absolutely everything about Rapture. If you loved Bioshock, you should have faith in the team that made it and not just Ken Levine!
