BioShock is doing it's end of the year award-harvesting as expected, snagging Best Game of the Year at the 2007 British Academy Video Games Awards sponsored by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA.) Neil Ralley, the General Manager of 2K Games, was quoted as saying:
"“BioShock is a testament to the unfailing creativity, expertise and efforts of our Boston and Canberra, Australia-based development studios. Furthermore, it demonstrates that compelling and original games, if properly supported, are capable of achieving immense popularity. We’re very proud of BioShock’s critical and commercial success.”
Good point, Neil. BioShock certainly is a victory in the way of boldly original content becoming a mainstream success. Like any wonderful recipe, the ingredients are never exactly the same, so we can wax poetic as long as we like about what made this title incredible. For me I still believe that the bottom line is innovation - pushing for the ideas that really electrify you and unifying other people towards the actualization of that idea.
I hope by proving that a game like BioShock can be a money maker as well as an award winner, we'll see more great content that breaks down the comventions of gaming in the future.

This game will probably end up winning 95% of GoTY awards, and I'm not happy about it. Honestly, it's not as original as a lot of people think. System Shock 2, which was made by many of the same people as BioShock, implemented many of the same ideas a long time ago. I'm not saying the game is bad, as it really is a work of art, but I feel confident that other games will be more "fun" to play. Like Mario Galaxy or Assassin's Creed. And while I did enjoy how the story was told, through the use of audio tapes and the like, I prefer seeing things happen right in front of my eyes. This is why I prefer God of War. At least show me what happened, not just tell me. They might as well of inlcuded the back story in the manual, ala Legend of Zelda for the NES.
They deserve it.
And the wonder why we don't listen to them on foreign policy affairs...

Still, as official bodies go...
I think part of why people think this game is so original is that it was the first FPS of this style to hit the consoles. There's a whole slew of PC FPS's that have the same mix of RPG and FPS elements, starting back with Deus Ex and probably going back even further. And in many ways the game play in Bioshock is actually a step back from these and more towards a standard FPS.
Bioshock was an exceptional game, but considering some of the other releases (O.K, well only the Orange Box can really compete) and the fact that 2007 still has a few really big releases left, I can't help but feel slightly disappointed.
Still, they deserve congratulations.
Can't wait to see Mass Effect win "next years" award. :)
Someone give me a 360 and this game so I can experience it.
The gameplay elements might not be that original, but i think in story, level design and all that it gets enough to call the game as a whole original.
I agree with you on the year thing, 2007 isn't over, WTF? Even if I think Bioshock should win they could at least wait until the last year big releases are out.
