BioShock's Jack to be a religious figure in BioShock 2? photo

Jack Ryan, the silent protagonist of the original BioShock, could be seen as some sort of messianic figure ten years after his adventure in Rapture, according to creative director Jordan Thomas. The player's actions in BioShock certainly made Jack a powerful figure that changed Rapture's history forever, and it seems his deeds won't be forgotten.

"His story, for the purposes of BioShock 2, is over, in terms of his world driving narrative," Thomas tells MTV. "That said, the things that he did are being fiercely debated by the splicers, because we wanted to support any of the choices the player could have made in the first game. It’s become kind of a religious question; what he did at the end of BioShock 1."

Now that sounds intensely interesting. I love a good story about how religion is split into pieces by the folly of human interpretation (yes, I'm a Life of Brian fan), and if that's the direction they're going with BioShock 2, I'm all for it. It's also worth noting that when Destructoid previewed BioShock 2, our very own Hamza Aziz noticed a room with two paintings of Jack's hands on the wall (evidenced by Jack's signature wrist tattoo). Candles were surrounding the paintings and it looked almost like a shrine.

Yeah, I like the sound of this.

I really like the idea of Splicers (who are selfish addicts) finding 'God' in their desperation. It's a natural progression for them. But I think the rest of the plot just screams cash-in.

I would have liked to have seen a 'parental nightmare' scenario that was touched upon in the teaser website, but instead we get a story where they're trying to force new characters into a seemingly established timeline. How come nobody mentioned this 3rd important antagonist Dr. Lamb before? Or even the proto-Big Daddy? I'm skipping this one, despite the decent religion angle.

Sweet. This is the first truly intriguing news about Bioshock 2 I've seen so far and I have to say I dig it...like a lot.

That's all.

"Holy Grail > Life of Brian.

That's all."

And The Meaning of Life > both of them, so ...

Wait, so is this based on save games from the previous game? As in the splicers will be talking about things like "Wow, our god saved all those Little Sisters!" vs "Wow, our god totally wrecked all those Little Sisters!" or is just concerning the bigger plot events that pretty much everyone did whether they were good or evil and thus they wouldn't really have to worry about dealing with save games from Bioshock 1?

Im OK:

I think he means is the Splicers will be arguing over what really happened in BioShock, whether Jsck saved the Little Sisters or killed them. I think the idea is to keep it ambiguous as to what is canon.

I'm getting more and more interested in Bioshock 2 on a story level. It seems they are trying to twist what we know about Rapture around. Whereas the previous game was all about no religion, no ultimate morality, no government. We now have the opposite. Government (This communist leader), and God. It's not just the idea of religion vs. atheism. It's more what you do with it, and obviously the people in Rapture do it all wrong. Seems like a cautionary tale for fundamentalism?

That's an awesome way of handling continuity. I'd love to see some religious wars between the splicers.

Th is is pretty awesome! You know this is probably wishful thinking, but it would be so sweet if save files of BioShock 1 would affect the way things happen in BioShock 2, like Jack would be a sort of Satan-ish being if the player chose the harvest path and got the "bad" ending, and more of a Christ-like figure if he rescued the sisters and got the "good" ending.

As far as I know, none of the ending's are official confirmed to be what happened... has it? :[
