BioShock's Big Daddy silenced by 2K forum mods, Internet fast like cheetah photo

2K Boston's Ken Levine is a pretty outspoken guy, and given the recent buzz and success surrounding BioShock, everyone wants to hear what the guy has to say. That is, of course, unless you're a moderator over at the 2K Games forums.

Levine has been very open and quite available to both the press and fans, so it's a given that he's been busy answering questions left and right. In a recent post at the 2K Forums, Levine detailed what he can ("If you hate that damned Circus of Values clown, you got me to thank!") and cannot answer ("I've never even heard of shader 2.0! I'm a technological moron!") when it comes to the BioShock.

He goes on to say that he can't handle customer service policies and procedures, or offer any answers regarding BioShock's DRM woes ("All that stuff is entirely out of my hands and frankly a bit beyond my understanding."). Not long after it appeared, however, the post vanished, possibly removed by 2K forum moderators.

Guess what? The Internet is too fast for you! Hit the jump for Levine's full post.

Hey all-

I'm really trying to answer every PM I get, both here, on TTLG, on Live and a couple of other sites I post on. Since BioShock has made the splash it has, this takes up a bunch of my time. In the interest of saving everybody's time, here's a little FAQ about things I can and cannot answer for you.

Things I can answer:

-Story questions
-Voice acting questions (If you hate that damn circus of values clown, you got me to thank!)
-Interface question
-Gameplay questions
-Art direction questions
-Other aesthetic questions (you hate that Perry Como track, I'm your man!)
-Widescreen questions (i.e. WHY THE HELL DID YOU DO IT THAT WAY, DICKHEAD! etc.)

I take responsiblity for all decisions made by my team at IG/2K Boston/Australia. I won't be able to answer the more technical questions (I love it when people write to me as if I've even heard of shader 2.0! I'm a technological moron.), but I can try to point you in the right direction (which is generally the tech support forums). I do have a huge amount of say as to what goes into patches, given budgetary limitations coming from 2K, however, so feel free to make your voices heard.

Things I can't answer:

These are some of the aspects of the BioShock experience that aren't under my control:

-Customer Service Policies and procedures- I don't have any control over customer service budget or decision making. Like...Zero. You may think I'm some kind of important dude, but at the end of the day we make the games, 2K New York publishes them, does customer support, etc. I've been heavily involved all week trying to get things improved for people, but at the end of the day, I can't take credit or blame for any changes to customer service.

-Copy Protection. Copy protection calls are all made in New York by Technical Director Tim Perry. Our job is to implement what he decides. If he's not a member of these forums, I'll suggest to Elizabeth that he gets active in them. The only thing I know about Securom is I've got about 1000 games with some version of it on my shelf. The tech that I know is limited to my experience many years ago as Macintosh computer consultant- in the days before the tubes of the interweb. All that stuff is entirely out of my hands and frankly a bit beyond my understanding.

My understanding is 2k has hired or is about to hire 24 hour a day support for the forums, amongst other things. I think we were all surprised by what a hit BioShock has been. I expect things to keep getting better. I'll try to help where I can, but there's a large organization above me that I have only marginal input into.

Thanks for listening. If we can direct PM-informed traffic to the most appropriate people everybody can get better and more timely answers to their questions.

Yeah, I actually agree with Neonie.

How was that relevant? I mean... good find and all, but why?

How could that possibly be bad publicity and why would they want to hide it? If companies let their employees be straight up like that more often, I would be more willing to support them. That and making good games, of course.

I guess 2K likes attracting as much negative attention as they can to themselves by doing stupid stuff like deleting posts from key members of the dev team for no good reason.

Smart fella's them 2k peoples!

i think the guy is great, i read a Q&A in gamespot of hom and he was outspoken (when theya sked him about bioshock going into the ps3 he just said "we are exclusives of xbox360 and PC... sorry for being a corporative". But regarding everything else the guy was really close, close in the way a developer should be with his audience.

But at the end of the day the guy is just a developer and not the boss. Maybe he has said too much and they are givin him a vacation now.

He's very cool in interviews and podcasts I've heard him speak in, I can't wait to see what he does next.

I really like the way things have turned out with some development studios as in the people who develop these games are no longer faceless code monkeys and you can now actually get in contact with those who are directly responsible for the development of your favourite games and understand the design better by the by understanding developers decisions.

I think they're hiding it because he's laying out, in no uncertain terms, that 2k has taken over. While they may have control over the development initially, they have no control any more. Such is the life of the business world, even in the video game industry. We all realize at some point that the bigwigs in the central office have the 'real' control over the game.

Nice to see developers talk like that... sad to see them being silenced by THE MAN.

I thought it was funny how people think ken is responsible for securRom, tech support, forum moderating, and all the woes of the world when in fact he's just the creative director.I mean half-life 2 didn't launch perfectly neither did world of warcraft, shit happens that are unforeseen and it can't be blamed on one guy.

They got rid of it because he openly suggested that 2K NY, specifically Tim Perry, should be accountable for the BioShock DRM on the forums, certainly a terrifying prospect for the highers-up.

PaulRice: Indeed. Publishers want to pick up a prominent IP, put the money into getting it into retail channels, then sit back and rake up a fat percentage of sales. They don't want Internet Matlocks searching up the home phone numbers of their execs to complain about DRM, no matter how much they deserve it.

I love this man. Not only has he designed quite of the few of the best games ever made, but he's a real person. Gotta love that. Makes the likes of Jaffe and Molyneux look like even bigger tools, if that's even possible.

Oh. His next step shouldn't be talking to The Man about DRM and/or widescreen issues. It should be unveiled threats to 2K along the lines of "If you don't let us keep our name, no more games for you, cockbags."

The day the Irrational name died was a sad, sad day indeed.

I'd imagine it also has something to do with the 'off the cuff' nature of what he'd posted.

If I've learned anything from my time in working for corporations you can never *EVER* post something that can be construed as being thematic your employer without getting tons of clearance from lawyers.

You know how before director's commentary and such they mention that their comments are not representative of the publisher? It's like that. I'd imagine that someone within the company had an issue with some of the wording and demanded that it be reneged.

I sent him a PM about modding tools / a map editor. He responded in about two hours. Answer : The team is thinking about it. And he even said sorry that he didn't have a definitive answer. He seems like a pretty awesome guy. Since we already know about the problems that Bioshock has been having (securom/crashes), why would any of the moderators delete it?. I think that that is a kick in his face, unless he deleted it himself, fearing repercussions.
