Nary three months after the BioShock 2 announcement, Take-Two Interactive chairman and talking head Strauss Zelnick casually mentioned to investors in a conference call that BioShock 3 is on its way.
Speaking about the recently-announced, Verbinksi-directed BioShock movie, Zelnick said, "It's more likely it would be released coincident with BioShock 3." While I can't necessarily blame Take-Two for trying to make some bank on an amazing IP, I have to admit that this is akin to a dagger in the kidney. No platform, release schedule, or studio was mentioned in the pseudo-announcement.
With a sure-to-be successful PS3 port, a sequel, and a movie, Jack Ryan seems to be doing pretty well for himself. I try (usually unsuccessfully) to stay out of the internet hivemind, but this time I'm just going dive right in: do not want. BioShock 2 has considerable narrative concerns of its own, and I can't begin to imagine where a third game will lead. I tend to give developers the benefit of the doubt in most cases, but for the time being, I'm aggressively pessimistic about BioShock 3.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Time to move along people, Bioshock is over, everyone go home.
I really can't think of any specific ideas off the top of my head, but it's a better alternative to whoring out the current story.
It's a good idea, but it's still completely whoring out something that was as perfect as we could have asked from the games industry.
You know a franchise has been whored-out when there are multiple announced sequels, none of which you know anything about.
Oh well.
lol, you guys are so gullible.
If Prince of Persia can do it, so can Bioshock!
I do however think it would be pretty cool to play as ryan's girlfriend (diane?)- she had an interesting story with both a view from ryan's side of the war and then a view from atlas's side.
The movie though? Ehhh.
But that's the problem the quality is not in question here, but the fact that they are taking a store that should stand alone and creating decent games just so they can rely on the name and make a quick buck. I'm not against Take-Two making more Bioshock-esque type games but using the Bioshock "franchise" just out of greed is what I'm against.
yeah.
A consumer obeys!
The developers really did a phenomenal job with the game from beginning to end. Is Ken Levine going to be on the project for the sequel? From what I understood his team is working on a different project other than Bioshock 2. And if that is the case, then Bioshock is to CoD2 as Bioshock 2 is to CoD3.
I want that. I really want that. Seriously. A retro-futuristic BioShock set on the moon. It would be AWESOME. And don't anyone say "System Shock," or I'll rape you with a macaque.
Am I the only one who is not presuming the worst and rioting in the streets? I look at it this way: We've already gotten one great game out of the franchise, something which no future game is going to take from us. And Ken Levine is involved with BS2 and the BS movie, so that inspires a little confidence. Not all franchises turn entirely to shit. Metal Gear Solid turned out okay. Why not BioShock? It's possible.
I honestly think you guys need to give this a chance and quit whining till you play it
Come on guys, this is bullshit, you can't jump sides of the fence on this. Either you are for sequels (done better) or not for them at all. And while you may often forget (myself included sometimes) games are still a business.
On top of that, did you guys rally with the same negativity for Half Life, Resident Evil, MGS etc sequels, crying into your milk like miserable fucks? Building upon success is a natural progression for anyone with sense. You guys should have more confidence in 2K. Indulging in sequels and not supporting others that are just as valid for success, (in fear they might be crap etc) is hypocritical and stupid double standards.
Did you guys ever think, that you don't actually need Rapture to have a Bioshock sequel game necessarily? While the story revolves around the characters machinations and agendas, the plot devices of Adam, Eve, Plasmids can be used anywhere. The possibility of plasmids out in the open world, slowly corrupting it, would make one hell of a sequel game.
Remember that Adam and Eve orginate from natural sources on the sea floor. Since the sea covers 70% of the planet, there's no reason why some of Sujoy's research couldn't have escaped Rapture (before its downfall), into the wrong hands (in a similar way that has happened in RE series). Also in a similar way to RE, we know that money is a good motivator to steal and sell secrets.
Think big, and imagine plasmids in the hands of any nations military, in the modern world, and you'll have some idea of where Bioshock could go next, and still be freaking cool.
This is why more Bioshock is going to be worth our time. Have some faith, confidence and support 2K.
And hey, look at those sequel scores. RE4, MGS4, Half Life 2, Ocarina of Time, CoD4 etc etc, all sequels, all damn good. Try to keep your mind open, people. Sequel does not mean or equal a bad game.
I'm with you Sharpless, totally agree.
Bunch of negative Nellys. >.>
And because YOU can't think of something different for Rapture doesn't mean others can't. You sure as hell didn't think of Rapture in the first place.
So whilst they may all be awesome again, the fact remains that there is a larger possibility of them all sucking harder than if they had just done things slowly and naturally.
i.e. this is like announcing Final Fantasy 13,14 and a film based on 13 simultaneously years ago. You'd instantly be worried about the quality of 13 because of the split agenda, would you not?
There has only been one Bioshock game of late, and before that the last system shock game was years ago. This is hardly whoring or for a better word overusing IP, when you compare this to FF games (Square Enix recently pushing out almost a few FF games in a year). Get some perspective.
We aren't gonna see Bioshock 2 until probably 09/10 anyway, and Bioshock 3 naturally beyond that, so though 2K have opened their mouths on it, notice they haven't given any dates. Take a chill pill, people.
As for the Bioshock film, I'm gonna keep an open mind on it. Why? Because again, there's so much story that the Bioshock universe can cover. I'd like to see Rapture being planned and built and Andrew Ryan before he left the mainland, thing like this would be better covered in a book or film, even if film is a step back from games, it will help bring new fans to the Bioshock games.
As far as the film... well, if they get the right artistic talent, it could work. Doesn't sound like they are trying to rush anything, which is good as there needs to be a lot of careful work to capture what made Bioshock great. The city and environments need to be believable so I'll wait to see pictures of the set and cast before I make judgement.
@Calkulon -- thank you.
I feel as though my time in Rapture, however fun and well made it was, is able to stand on its own two feet much unlike many games out there today. It was an engrossing experience that I would prefer was not diluted by franchise whoring so as not to destroy the fond memories I have of it.
Only time will tell, though, if my wishes will come true.
