BioShock movie update: It's still coming, folks photo

Unsurprisingly, adapting a videogame like BioShock into a film takes a significant chunk of time. And coming up with a not-totally-insane budget for a story about an extravagant, submerged city? Not a fun process, I would imagine.

While all has been mostly quiet on this front, producer Gore Verbinski recently spoke with IGN about the status of the project. "We're working trying to make it. The problem with BioShock was: R-rated movie, underwater, horror. It's a really expensive R-rated movie," he admits.

"So we're trying to figure out a way working with [director] Juan Carlos [Fresnadillo] to get the budget down and still keep so it's true to the core audience, you know? The thing is it has to be R, a hard R. We don't want to dumb it down, we don't want to make it PG-13," Verbinski reassures.

"We want to keep it really edgy, and it's a huge bill."

I am ... intrigued? Yeah, those words just came out of my mouth right now.

Part of me dies every time a video game movie is made.

The fact that they're not dumbing it down for kids shows major promise for this movie. Therefore it will never be made.

The main problem is that the best parts of the games story depend completely upon the fact that you are playing the game. The twists still theoretically work and stuff, but they don't carry the same punch (and won't in any movie version made). That being said, I'd be vaguely interested in seeing the Rapture they design.

R-rated movie, underwater, horror.
The thing is it has to be R, a hard R.

It'll suck.

I agree with RichardBlaine here. Most games are so awesome because they put you in the role of the hero. It's not Solid Snake who is sneaking up on bad guys, it's you who is sneaking up on bad guys (in the role of Snake). You do not become part of a movie in the same way as you become part of a game. It's a different experience carrying a different impact as watching a movie.

Come on, Xzyliac, that game played with too much empowerment to be horror, but other than that, Rapture was a terrifying place. Mutated, violent people. Sadistic, obsessed masters of their craft. And you jab a full hypodermic needle into your arm every couple of rooms.

Then againnnn... my favorite parts of the game were coated with atmosphere, but were more about moments like "A man chooses," and "I've always hated doubters." I don't know if the characters that I loved were all about the "hard R", unless we're talking about Steinmen, "Aesthetics are a moral imperative."

@ Xzyliac,

"It'll suck."

It'll suck because it's rated R? Totally the opposite.. it'll suck if it's PG-13.

Never heard anyone complain about an R before.

Have you guys seen what happens recently when someone tries to make a horror film with the emphasis on being "rated R"?

My complaint isn't with the rating or the horror. It's how bent he seems on being rated R. That doesn't bode well with me. To me that translates into shock value and slasher flicks. Just make it fuckin' good. The rated R bit will take care of itself so long as you're at least somewhat faithful.

Do you speak the words as you're typing them like a character in an after-school special? Rad.

There is a chance this will be the first nice game-to-movie adaptation. Fresnadillo is a wonderful director, you guys should check out "Intacto"

uh, no, this doesn't mean the movie is "still happening". what it does mean is that the movie is not officially dead yet.

im sure the underwhelming sales of Bioshock 2 didn't help things, either.

I'm not familar with Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. I know he directed 28 Weeks Later, but I've never watched it. It got 71% on Rotten Tomatoes and the consensus was "While 28 Weeks Later lacks the humanism that made 28 Days Later a classic, it's made up with fantastic atmosphere and punchy direction" Hmm, I not sure how this movie is going to turn out, but I wish him luck.

Also, I know this is unrelated, but I just saw on Rotten Tomatoes that The Last Airbender is bombing big time with a 7% out of 30 reviews. It's bad enough M. Night Shyamalan ruins his own movies, why did he have to go and ruin this one? Damn... T_T

I've been promised the world and let down by video game adaptations before (*cough* Silent Hill *cough*), so I want to believe this, but I'm not entirely convinced.

That being said, it's looking likely this'll never be made anyway so maybe this is all a moot point.

Well, Bioshock doesn't necessarily need to be R Rated. Most of the content from the game that was interesting as all hell was the plot, which really isn't anything gruesome.
