BioShock movie getting 28 Weeks Later director? photo

With Gore Verbinski stepping down as director for the sadly inevitable BioShock movie (though hanging on as producer), there's an opening for a new man to steer the project forward. Universal Studios wants that man to be Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. He's the chap who made 28 Weeks Later, as if our headline didn't give enough of a clue.

Fresnadillo is in talks right now over the project, but final approval will come from Take-Two, which has final approval on any directors. Of course, the film could do much worse than have Fresnadillo on board, so I think the game publisher should say yes unless it wants something like Michael Bay or, worse, Uwe Boll to jump on the script. Fresnadillo's producing partner, Enrique Lopez Lavigne, may also come on board as a producer.

The Infected from 28 Weeks Later kind of act like Splicers, being that they're both diseased freaks that rush headlong at people and don't make any sense why they try and speak. Should be an easy job for this particular director, really.

Agreed. The guy did a great job with 28 weeks. I went in thinking it would ruin the original but ended up liking it better.

I'm very wary. I wasn't a fan of the director's last film and the news that universal is cutting back on resources makes me think this won't end well.

Mixed feelings about the movie. Just give me Gary Oldman as Sander Cohen, and perhaps everything will turn out alright.

Bioshocks already ripped off Jurassic Park, and Gremlins 2 (The New Batch): now it's gunning for zombie movies?!

28 weeks later was fucking terrible.
My response to this is NO, NO, NO, NO, FUCKING NO.
Hey hollywood just because a game was good doesn't mean it needs a God damn movie.

28 Weeks Later was a fcuking kick in the teeth to anyone who enjoyed the elements of character interaction and evolution featured in 28 Days Later.

If they had just had the balls to call it "Generic Zombie Movie With Stock Military Characters and Magical Child Who Will Not Mean Anything To You" instead of trying to tie it to Danny Boyle's excellent work, then I might have respected it. But, well, read the first sentence again.

he's the reason I'm so glad they're bringing back Boyle for 28 Months Later. This will be a joke.

I am pensive, and you should all be too. This is going to be hit or miss.

28 Weeks Later had it's strong points--mostly involving Rose Byrne onscreen--but really, terrible logic. "Let's turn out all the lights within the safe zone! That'll make spotting the infected a whole lot easier!"

I have nothing against the director--it was the script that I had a beef about.

it's time for these hollywood assholes to pack their shit up and turn the lights off on their way out, because it's over.

they had their chance to make something special, with a highly talented director in Verbinski, and (as usual) they blew it. they obviously have ZERO respect for the source material.

I'll be damned if Uwe Boll ends up directing it, and it ends up being quite possibly one of the greatest movies of its century.

Bioshock would make an amazing film. But what I can never understand is why the directors/screenwriters of video game adaptations always deviate from the original game's story...if this happens in the case of Bioshock (which it probably will), it'll be crapola.

28 Weeks later was..... entertaining. I guess. For a zombie film.

It wasn't the most brainless of zombie films (ha ha), but it wasn't exactly what you'd call a "deep" film.

If he takes over, expect the BioShock film to be a fun, action film. Just don't expect anything else. Because if you do, you'll be disappointed.

28 weeks later was a pile of shit that ruined the surprisingly good thing 28 days had going. Then they hammed it up by making it US-focused and hollywoody instead of gritty and charming, it went for shitty plot devices to open up an excuse to have gore and unlikeable characters shooting shit.

it is now safe to say that this movie will officially be terrible, not that that wasn't a strong possibility before- it's just now it's a sure thing. fuck Fresnadillo.
