BioShock is the all-time top ranked Xbox 360 title on Metacritic photo

Are you "shocked"? We aren't.

2K Games is proudly proclaiming that their art deco first-person shooter BioShock has secured the position of all-time top ranked Xbox 360 game on mega-review site Metacritic. And if that isn't enough to impress, then you should also know that BioShock is also the top ranked game across all console platforms.

2K Games also says that the good word about BioShock is getting out, and they have proof. The title has set a new record on Xbox LIVE as the fastest downloaded demo to ever each the 1 million mark. They say that it only took nine days from its August 12th release to outperform all other demos ever released on the service. Wow.

"We are really pleased that Microsoft's Xbox LIVE Marketplace has managed to attract a record number of gamers to its site to download and check out BioShock," said Christoph Hartmann, President of 2K. "The overwhelmingly positive response is not only reflected in the traffic to Xbox LIVE, but the record breaking score reported by Metacritic. We're excited about the reception the fans have given BioShock and are honored that the game has been recognized as 'Game of the Year' material."

More than 50 reviews have averaged out to a score of 96 on Metacritic, giving it a "Universal Acclaim" rating on the site. Those that follow and use the site will tell you that this accomplishment is truly rare. On top of all of that, the game has managed to rack up perfect scores from several game news outlets like Game Informer, 1UP, Games Radar, GameSpy, GamePro, Yahoo! Games, Games Daily, and Electronic Gaming Monthly, not to mention our fine establishment

Congrats to 2K Games on a job well done.

The full press release is after the jump.

New York, NY - September 10, 2007 -2K Games, a publishing label of
Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO), announced today that
BioShock, its hit title exclusively available for Xbox 360(tm) video
game and entertainment system from Microsoft and Games for Windows(r),
secured the position of all-time top ranked Xbox 360 game* and the
year's highest ranked game across all console platforms on
Metacritic.com, the popular site that aggregates review scores from the
leading video game publications and websites. In addition, the title has
set a new record on Xbox LIVE* as the fastest downloaded demo to ever
reach the 1 million mark. The gaming community first learned that the
Xbox 360(tm) demo version of BioShock became available to download on
Microsoft's Xbox LIVE Marketplace via a surprise announcement on August
12.
While many games receive high praise for a specific feature, BioShock's
rave reception revolves around all of its key components. This includes
the unique art deco design, the eerie ambiance of its full orchestra
score and the 40's era soundtrack, the interactive quality of the
environments, dripping and flood-rushing water effects that have set a
new standard for realism, a deep and engaging story line, and gameplay
that involves moral choices, an array of options for surmounting
obstacles and adversaries, and a power-up component that involves
biologically altering your character.
In only nine days since its release on Xbox LIVE, BioShock had
outperformed every other demo release on the service, demonstrating both
the incredible anticipation for the game and the growth of Xbox LIVE's
community.

"We are really pleased that Microsoft's Xbox LIVE Marketplace has
managed to attract a record number of gamers to its site to download and
check out BioShock," said Christoph Hartmann, President of 2K. "The
overwhelmingly positive response is not only reflected in the traffic to
Xbox LIVE, but the record breaking score reported by Metacritic. We're
excited about the reception the fans have given BioShock and are honored
that the game has been recognized as 'Game of the Year' material."

With an overall review score of 96 (out of 100) based on more than 50
different critical reviews, the Xbox 360 version of BioShock has earned
"Universal Acclaim" status* on Metacritic.  Among the leading video game
enthusiast outlets that awarded one or more versions of BioShock with a
perfect score are Game Informer, 1UP, Games Radar, GameSpy, GamePro,
Yahoo! Games, Games Daily, and Electronic Gaming Monthly.

Developed by 2K Boston and 2K Australia for 2K Games, BioShock is a
"genetically enhanced" first-person shooter that lets players do things
never before possible in the genre. Gamers enter the game as a castaway
in Rapture, a decaying art deco underwater utopia torn apart by civil
war. Caught between powerful forces and hunted down by genetically
modified "splicers" and deadly security systems, players have to come to
grips with a deadly, mysterious world filled with powerful technology,
fascinating characters and morality defining choices. To make it to the
end, players can turn everything they encounter into a weapon,
biologically modify their body with plasmids, hack devices and security
systems, upgrade weapons, craft new ammo variants, and experiment with
different battle techniques. No encounter ever plays out the same and no
two gamers will play BioShock the same way.

96 is just about what i'd rate it at this point as well (i'm not quite done with the game yet, but i don't think much could happen to change my mind either way).

Awesome. BioShock most definitely deserves it in my opinion.

Such a great game that deserves all the accolades. I just hope a sequel will be made because I really enjoyed Bioshock a lot.

Why is it that most super awesome games are given 96/100? Gamespot gave 9.6s to Gears, All the modern GTAs, MGS2, Oblivion, etc.

then you should also know that BioShock is also the top ranked game across all console platforms.

Sorry to be a complete asshat because this isn't really that relevant but do you mean current gen consoles, or all consoles ever? The first option is true the second is not.

I love this game! I'ts teh awesomeness :p
You can't even compare it to halo... that is made for kids playing all day long in multyplayer......
We wanted a plot like this for years.. BioShock is the point of conjunction between the "funny" game aspect, and the "serious" film one. BIOSHOCK WINS!

It will be interesting to see if Halo 3 takes the top spot, I'm hoping Haze turns out to be amazingly unique and innovative.

It's funny how bioshock gets such high scores seeing how the combat is average and the only thing original about the game is the story.

Ok, I'm obviously gonna be the minority here but. Is it a good game? Yea. Is it that good? Nope. I played it and it's neat and all but it's not THAT neat. I don't know, maybe I was just expecting something better based on all of the hype.
Meh.

Um, Dale...in the press release, it says, “We are really pleased that Microsoft’s Xbox LIVE Marketplace has managed to attract a record number of gamers to its site to download and check out BioShock,” not “heck out BioShock”. Just thought you might like to know.

Seriously, though, I’m not “shocked” at this at all. For all of the praise that Gears of War received, at heart, it’s just an immensely pretty FPS that lacks any conceivable story. Oblivion is definitely great, but it requires a hell of a time commitment, so it isn’t for everyone. I mean, those are the two other highly acclaimed 360 games, right? I could be missing something...I mean, I only own a PS3...

'the combat is average'
Did we play the same game ? Because then any fps combat is average at best

to Jedburg: the combat is exactly like clive barker's Undying (a six year old game), add infinite respawns with no penalty and yeah your get average combat.

I am kinda between Demon and Jedburg. The combat is unique in some regards, such as setting up some battles to be easier through hacking cameras, turrets, and using enrage etc. Also the different abilities can be used in a really cool fashion to win certain battles easier. But all that coolness isnt totally unique? Anyone remember Deus Ex? VERY similar game in that regard. Bioshock really gets its high marks from its incredibly well designed atmosphere and and storytelling method. This is the only 10/10 praise i give it. To me its a very solid 9/10 game. NOT in the top 10 or 20 games of all time but certainly in the top 30 or so.

ive never played undying so i cant comment but infinte respawns is down to how often a player dies and have never found it to ruin the atmosphere and combat

I have to agree with J03yyz, great game indeed but the hype is suprassing it's replayability. Once you finish it on both endings there isn't much to it left to entertain. Not much in enemy variety, and it doesn't even open up so you can play a certian level ala half life.

Well the thing is when you have no fear of dying and can just exploit the game to get past a difficult or annoying spot when in reality the game itself is actually easy, the game becomes average or similar to have god mode on.

I see your point and I guess the player has to stop themselves 'abusing' the game cos it kind of sucks if you play it like having god mode on. Btw im not a massive bioshock fanboy but its a damn good game.

I agree it's good but not groundbreaking like the reviews are making it out to be. I think that's why the pc reviewers are scoring lower since they would have more history with these types of fps.

Inflation much? I'm not saying that Bioshock isn't amazingly great, but I am saying that they ignored things that had room for improvement. What if Mass Effect is better? will they score it an 11/10 C'mon reviewers, stop it.

Sure, bioshock is good. I throughly enjoyed it. But it certainly isn't the second coming of christ that everyone seems to think it is.

It shys away from Character interaction, not to build atmosphere (I find it hard to sympathise with a 120x100 jpg) but because as the part with the guy in the theatres shows, the character models are wooden and inhuman. For a game that relies on atmosphere and plot so much, I found this disconcerting that it contstantly seperates you from the characters you're supposed to be sharing the story with, by poor scripting and impassable barriers.

Along with the other usual complaints of repetative combat and repetative enemies - I see this game as a 85%.

How it can share results with the mighty Half-life 2 and Ocarina of time baffles me!

Edge only gave it 8/10. That's 80%. Surely that's more realistic than the mark inflation bestowed upon games by masturbatory 'indy' websites, where 50% (an average mark) means that the game sux ballz.

Get some perspective people. Bioshock might be good, but it's no GoldenEye or even Halo.

first of all halo and goldeneye are completely different then Bioshock, It is an amazing game its single player aspect are amazing its story, lighting, audio, and game play are all fantastic i am no fanboy. Also did you ever go to school, what your doing is like arguing that 50% in a class should be passing
half of good game should not be average
i would like to hear your reply
