BioShock influenced Resident Evil 5, Capcom entitled to the sweat of 2K's brow photo

One of the things that makes Capcom such an amazing developer, in my opinion, is that it possesses an open-mindedness not often shared by fellow Japanese studios. Capcom seems unafraid to blend Western and Eastern thinking to create games with worldwide appeal, and with Resident Evil 5, the company is borrowing from the best -- including 2007's amazing FPS BioShock.

In a recent interview with CVG, RE5 producer Masachika Kawata discussed the team's Western influences:

Have you or any of your team particularly enjoyed any western games recently? Have any games influenced your ideas for Resi 5?

Kawata: Bioshock. It's a classic game which really utilized the next gen power very well. The world is very strong and very believable, and the whole game was quite inspiring.

Kawata also touched upon the racism "controversy" that once surrounded the game's African setting, explaining once again that the decision was not rooted in the team's social or political leanings:

Kawata: We chose Africa because we're extending the storyline logically. Following the tradition of the Resident Evil franchise, you'll remember from Code Veronica - the Progenitor virus comes from Africa so we wanted to go back to the root of where the virus originated. For the people who think it's racist... well, we can't please everyone. We're in the entertainment business - we're not here to state our political opinion or anything like that. It's unfortunate that some people felt that way.

Check out the full interview if you're looking forward to Resident Evil 5, as it is sure to have a lot more of interest for you. Personally, I am going to dream of RE5 ending in a massive Andrew Ryan/Albert Wesker showdown.

HAHAHAHA, love the pic Jim. :)

@Blindside
What's up? I think it's awesome that the RE5 team borrowed and was inspired by an awesome game such as Bioshock. Hope I'm not being a prick, but what possible negatives can you foresee from being inspired by Bioshock? :)

Hrmm, as long as it's still a good game I'm ok with taking from the good to make the good even gooder.

GOODER.

Oh, God. In those days where we are recalling stuff left and right because it may or may not offend someone, it's refreshing to see that not everyone has gone mad.

im not dissagreeing with you, but i dont think anything really influences RE games...except previous RE games, not saying theres not other things that inspired ideas into the game (like giant ogre monsters -re4-) but RE is so unique to itself and bioshock aint got SHIT on RE, dont be hatin, this is my opinion, your still a great idealist lol.

@ mr chief: I agree with you saying that nothing really influences RE, but completely disagree with the rest of it. the RE games have always been complete dog turds, both in gameplay and in story, until RE4, which only fixed the controls.

It's one of gamings big mysteries as to why people still buy enough of them for there to be a 5th.

@Capn Birdseye: Thank you for admitting that RE4 was not perfect. I mean, the gameplay was good, but the controls and character movement still need some work and the story was just stupid. Any third person shooter that needs a quick turn button because the camera moves too slow has problems.

I think that Capcom should just start over with RE. They should abandon the old characters and incomprehensible plotlines and just start fresh. Capcom could create a much more mature and well thought out universe now that they have the skill to do so and proper examples to follow.

That's cool. Very glad to see some japanese developers that liked Bioshock. Its a very thought provoking game and that's a positive thing for games to have. I'd love to see more of that kind of storytelling in RE series, and less of the B-movie cliches that plague the series.

RE5 looks like a RE4 upgrade, doesn't really matter, I'm buying it and playing it! =D
